Just that really?

A film that you've watched that has stayed with you and why?
Doesn't have to be a film you've ever watched again...

But recommendations welcome!

OP posts:

I have seen a lot of these already and am working my way through some of those that I haven't.

Thanks to @stillvicarinatutu for A Very Long Engagement. I really loved this and it will stay with me too.

@paintyhands and @nancyglancey thank you for Dancer in the Dark. Bjork (though apparently a nightmare on set) was absolutely outstanding.

@walker- Whatever that film is there's no point in me watching it now...

RoachTheHorse · 22/09/2022 15:48

Se7en stuck with me, particularly sloth.

Cape Fear - Robert De Niro, the first film to properly frighten me.

For pure joy it would be Labyrinth

Always4Brenner · 22/09/2022 15:50

My go to
the Nuns Story
Ryans Daughter

Breaking the Waves, I watched it on a bleak wet Sunday afternoon about 20 years ago and it has stayed with me ever since! Thoroughly depressing.

Agree completely. I watched it years ago when it must have not long come out and it has never left me. Emily Watson is superb in it, but it was indeed very bleak.

With Nail and I, Bridget jones Diary, when Harry met Sally and Annie Hall - my favourite feel good films

Schindler's list, saving private Ryan - harrowing

eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind, talented Mr Ripley , Boys from Brazil, marathon Man, taking of Pelham 123 (original version) one flew over the cuckoos nest -- all very quirky but mesmerising

colouringindoors · 22/09/2022 23:40

Oldies:
Kramer vs Kramer
The Champ

Plus
The Pianist
Se7en (for the worst reasons)
Sense and Sensibility so, so charming and Emma Thompson' character's reaction at the end was just brilliant.
The English Patient "I'll come back for you" 💔
Arrival - would you make the same choices if you knew the consequences?

Very recently
Good luck to you Leo Grande. Brilliant, just brilliant and sadly ground-breaking look at middle aged women's sexuality.

PerkingFaintly · 22/09/2022 23:49

The Piano (the 1993 Jane Campion film with Holly Hunter, set in New Zealand – not to be confused with The Pianist!)

AsanteSana · 23/09/2022 00:03

'Pili' - a British/Tanzanian co production with a virtually all amateur cast, in Swahili, but subtitled in English.

Pili, the titular character, has HIV and the film follows her efforts to escape a life of working in the fields for a pitiful wage whilst trying to support her young son and baby, manage her health condition, aquire her antiretroviral drugs and follow her dream of running a market stall selling beauty products. Very sobering film and a realistic portrayal of life in a developing African country.

As a PP said, Ex Machina. Something about the setting, the story, Alicia Vikander being completely believable as a robot, and the genius ending.
And Million Dollar Baby. Had no idea it would end like that, was so shocking.

beachcitygirl · 23/09/2022 09:08

Get out - absolutely amazing. Hard to describe you'll need to trust me, the guy who is Josh in the west wing is in it.

Last night in soho. A young modern aspiring fashion designer who is fascinated by the fashion & music of carnaby street in the 60's, starts to have disturbing dreams. Stars Anna-taylor joy & matt smith

A quiet place - sounds awful but is AMAZING A family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. The mother is pregnant. Follow up also fab with Cillian murphy

Yesterday - fun happy what if movie. A struggling musician has a car accident and wakes up in a world where the Beatles never existed.. & takes advantage.

Almost famous. With Kate Hudson as a young groupie

waterlego · 23/09/2022 20:48

I second ‘Get Out’ @beachcitygirl. Brilliant film.

Dimsumbun · 28/09/2022 21:15

The Road just truly gut wrenching

City of Life and Death about the Rape of Nanking, that war was why my family fled China

Great Expectations started my lifelong love of Dickens

Conspiracy of Hearts about Italian Nuns saving Jewish children in WWII

Raise the Red Lantern about a concubine, very sad, shockingly my great Grandfather had a concubine.

Hacksaw Ridge a true story about an American medic who refused to carry a gun on religious grounds in WWII

Glory based on the first all black regiment in the American civil war led by Robert Gould Shaw, who was white, I visited the memorial statue in Boston to him and his regiment whilst on an American tour.

12 Years a slave based on the biography of Solomon Northrop born a free man who was kidnapped and enslaved.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Girl Interrupted, I think in their own ways they are amazing and sad narratives of the treatment of people with MH issues.

Amelie and Chocolat just love them both as so beautiful and a little quirky. Juliet Biochet is to me in that film just the epitomy of womanhood.

For just pure fun Galaxy Quest, Blades of Glory, Dodgeball,

For genuine horror The Ring, Shutter and The Shining

I'm watching sleepers on Netflix. 🥲

Old Boy for the twist.
Midsommar for the shock value.
The first Jurassic Park movie purely for how amazing it felt at the time.

Thanks so much for Oldboy. I even watched the remake which I think should have had a much higher score than it did, surprisingly!

FeralWitch · 25/10/2022 18:54

Les Enfants Du Paradis.

For everything: the atmosphere, the performances, the philosophy, the wit, the heartbreaking ending (‘But…what about me?) and the Vichy France backstory to the filming.

Sublime.

avamiah · 27/10/2022 00:12

The Purge ( original first film),
I had terrible thoughts after watching this film but then I woke up.😱

stillvicarinatutu · 29/09/2022 00:17

I'm watching sleepers on Netflix. 🥲

I have seen this Amazing film so many times and the part with the “ticket “ with Robert De Niro playing Father Bobby the catholic priest is just in my opinion one of the most Iconic Movie Scenes of all time .

Robin233 · 28/10/2022 22:22

Star Dust
Family Man / Nicholas Cage
Aeon Flux
Day of the Doctor

OhThatChicken · 28/10/2022 22:42

Arrival. Love sci-fi and both lead actors. But the reveal of what happens and why was utterly traumatic. Both DH and I were sobbing (and while I cry at adverts I've never seen him cry at any film or TV other than this).

colouringindoors · 29/10/2022 21:05

@OhThatChicken Me too!!!

BattenburgSlice · 29/10/2022 21:29

Whitnail and I
Ghostbusters
Back to the future
Nightmare on Elm street
Sense and Sensibility
Billy Elliot
The conjuring
The Omen

LuckyPeonies · 30/11/2022 02:54

Doubt, about a priest who may or may not have acted inappropriately toward a child. Very thought-provoking.
The Bird Cage remake with Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. I like it much better than the original. Have watched it many times and it always makes me laugh.
Parasite fantastic movie, deserved all the accolades.
Stir of Echoes very spooky, Kevin Bacon was great.
What Lies Beneath old fashioned ghost story with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. Perfect movie for a lazy rainy afternoon.

Crash - the one with Matt Dillon and a huge ensemble cast, not the earlier one. A very disturbing watch.

Came on here to say the same.

Also Eden Lake. So disturbing.

OMG the scene in the kitchen with the reflective cabinets in Jurassic Park must win a prize for most tense moment in movies.

Blogdog · 01/09/2022 00:43

Mother! Was not prepared for that at all, especially the scene with the baby. I read the director intended it as a metaphor for how humans mistreat earth, which I can see when I think back on it, but it was so disturbing.

Also Midsommar - a wild ride with lots of deeply unsettling scenes.

Absolutely loved Mother! What a masterpiece movie.
