Just that really?

A film that you've watched that has stayed with you and why?
Doesn't have to be a film you've ever watched again...

But recommendations welcome!

The last couple of films I watched with Frances Dorman - Nomadland and the three billboards one - I wanted to watch again as soon as they finished.

Especially Nomadland. I found myself on the internet looking up the people who appeared and I want to go on an American road trip.

Frances Dorman was fantastic in it.

She's superb isn't she? Two very thought provoking films.

What dreams may come: if I believed In heaven i imagine it’d look like that.
One hour photo: Robin Williams as a villain- perfect!
Moulin Rouge: chefs kiss
Romeo and Juliet: ditto
2 films from my childhood, think one was as the wind blows? Haunting memory of a family hiding behind something whilst a nucleur bomb detonates?? And then one which was made entirely out of plasticine and I can remember them being on the earth as seen from space..
The Prince of Egypt: spectacular animation and music and did not get the recognition it deserved imho.

Fire Walk with Me. Probably would only make sense if you'd watched Twin Peaks but it's a masterpiece.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/09/2022 07:57

Schindler's list
The Magdalene Sisters - both v distressing

Dodgeball - v silly
Nowhere in Africa
Russian ark - one continuous shot around the winter palace through time

ShirleyJackson · 03/09/2022 08:02

Il Postino - both for the film itself, and the tragic backstory.

Schindler’s List, for obvious reasons.

Enough Said - James Gandolfini’s last role, and he’s adorable in it. Such a sweet, relatable film.

The Sixth Sense - not for the twist, but for the ghosts the little boy meets. They were all so sad.

Life Is Beautiful - oh my god, devastating.

Precious - gruelling, but totally uplifting. And Mariah Carey’s performance blew me away. I don’t know why she hasn’t done more serious acting.

Withnail and I - my feelgood film.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? - cracking story, made all the better for being true. Melissa McCarthy really shows her acting chops.

Badlands - I love everything about this film. The performances, the cinematography, the music, the matter of fact nature of the storytelling…it’s a masterpiece.

Ordinary People - watched it many years ago and the grief of the boy over losing his brother still haunts me 😢

Completely agree. Had me sobbing. Mary Tyler Moore is amazing

Hyacinth2 · 03/09/2022 08:18

Recently watched and enjoyed the wellness clinic on All4 - scary and gruesome

Hyacinth2 · 03/09/2022 08:20

I like adventure stories - if that's how to describe them so Dances with Wolves and the Revevant

Good shout!

Life Is Beautiful: so many mixed emotions watching that film.

Rear Window is a film I can (and do) watch again and again. I just love everything about it.

misspiggy44 · 03/09/2022 08:26

Old Boy for the twist.
Midsommar for the shock value.
The first Jurassic Park movie purely for how amazing it felt at the time.

Return To Paradise

Found the DVD in the bargain bin for £1 in Tesco, and I've lost count of how many times I've seen it.

WolverineBluey · 03/09/2022 08:31

Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I must watch it again!

LateSummerLobelia · 03/09/2022 08:36

Ridiculously trivial, but a french film called 'Not everyone is lucky enough to have Communist parents'.

The mother/ wife was very matronly and her husband adored her. I was brought up ina family that valued thin-ness very highly and was in the middle of a major eating disorder and it really shook my world on its axis the idea that you could be adored and valued despite your weight.

Placemarking! There are some great suggestions here.

HouseInChaos · 03/09/2022 09:01

Crash - the one with Matt Dillon and a huge ensemble cast, not the earlier one. A very disturbing watch.

dalisdrippingclock · 03/09/2022 09:58

I loved The Great Beauty, a crazy Italian film, there is an amazing party scene.

paintyhands · 03/09/2022 10:06

Dancer in the Dark, another Lars Von Trier as mentioned by someone else. Amazing. Watched it years ago and it affected me so much I’ve never watched it again. Also Breaking the Waves. To a lesser extent Requiem for a Dream. And Midsommer, as mentioned by a few!

colouringindoors · 03/09/2022 10:17

Arrival.

I'm not a sci fi fan as such but for me this film was so much more. The eternal "would you make the same decision if you knew how it would end" question.

colouringindoors · 03/09/2022 10:29

Testament of Youth

Based on the memoir written by Vera Brittain about her experiences and losses from WW1. It's hugely powerful and a reminder of the tragic loss of so many young men.

Nil by mouth. I come from a family of alcoholism and abuse and my mum was constantly ashamed that she was in that marriage and couldn't get out. I felt like it handled the complexity of women staying with abusers beautifully, and the strength of these women and the women who surround them was palpable. Absolutely horrific but equally mesmerising. Outstanding acting all round.

I was in rehab around 15 years ago (first attempt) and they made us watch that film one day as a ‘topic group’. I was feeling none too clever as going through a detox and it really upset me. Excellent film though but just too much for me at that time

Oh this has stuck with me for years!!!! I have it on dvd I felt it was so powerful but I hardly watch it because it's so emotive

One film- surprisingly by Adam Sandler called Reign over me- about a man who lost his family in 9/11. Very emotive !
