I'm English, so by that I mean films not in English Grin

Just watched a brilliant film. The Invisible Guest on Netflix. Psychological-thriller, very, very clever plot. Spanish film and there's no English audio so you have to watch it with subtitles (unless you're fluent in Spanish or some other european languages that are available).

Haven't really watched any subtitled films over the last decade so there must be some recent blinders that I've missed.

Any recommendations please?

I'm a languages teacher, so I ought to be posting to recommend films, but I have been shamefully bad at seeking out foreign language films to watch over the last umpteen few years.

Older ones I've enjoyed: Pan's Labyrinth, Run Lola Run, Goodbye Lenin, Life Is Beautiful, Amélie

I love french film. Hors de Prix (priceless) is one of my favourite films ever, a great romcom. A Prophet is a good gangster movie. District 13 is a very enjoyable sort of dystopia thriller. I also really enjoyed the Beat That My Heart Skipped and Dans Paris, both a bit more morose.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 24/09/2021 18:03

Life is Beautiful. A comedy about the Holocaust. You will laugh, and you will cry. Enjoy!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 24/09/2021 18:05

There is a Russian film called Country of the Death. It is brilliant.

SocksAndTheCity · 24/09/2021 18:55

Off the top of my head and in addition to some great ones above Smile

Parasite, Oldboy, Train to Busan, The Witch, The Host (Korean)
Sleep Tight, The Bar, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Spanish)
Riders Of Justice (Danish)

CiaoForNiao · 24/09/2021 18:59

Escape from Auschwitz (or maybe Auschwitz Escape). On Prime. One is I'm English and is shit. The other is in Slovak and is brilliant. (Same story)

Not a film but the Spanish series Grand Hotel was really good.

Twizbe · 24/09/2021 19:02

My favourites

Goodbye Lenin - German
Look who's Back - German
Downfall - German
Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis - French
Les Visiters - French (but old and I've not seen for a long time. I take no responsibility if it's aged badly)

Twizbe · 24/09/2021 19:04

If you want a series - Dark on Netflix is great. We watched the first series but could t get into series 2

Billandbob · 24/09/2021 19:05

Amelie
Betty Blue
Let the right one in (Swedish version)
REC (Spanish version)

MagpieCastle · 24/09/2021 19:10

Wim Wenders ‘Wings of desire’ (German). B/w 1987. Wonderful.

elQuintoConyo · 24/09/2021 19:20

The Devil's Backbone (ghost story)
The Orphanage (horror)
Pan's Labyrinth (horror)
Rec (horror again!)
Like Water for Chocolate
Jamon Jamon (featuring very young Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem).
All Spanish, all brilliant.

Japanese originals: The Ring, Dark Water, The Grudge, The Eye (horrifying!).

Cool 80s french:
Three Colours: red/white/blue
Cyrano de Bergerac
La Femme Nikita ( I love this!)
Delicatessen (fabulous black comedy)

I could watch non-English speaking films all day.

Yarqueen · 24/09/2021 19:31

One more I forgot: Motorcycle Diaries (spanish). One of the best films I've ever seen

waltzingparrot · 24/09/2021 19:51

Oh I love Betty Blue. Not sure why really, it's quite a depressing film but the music is the soundtrack to DH's and my early romance. He loved the music, hated the film.

Thank you all, I'm going to watch all the ones I haven't seen that you've suggested. Friday's will now be our Friday Foreign Film Fest.

GlitchStitch · 24/09/2021 20:12

Sadece Sen- it's a beautiful Turkish film, it was on Netflix but not sure if it still is. Turkish TV dramas are also amazing, on a whole other level.

NameChangeinHaste · 24/09/2021 20:18

Goodbye Lenin, and if you fancy a TV series, Lupin is so good!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 24/09/2021 20:34

To add to some great recommendations above.
Europa Europa - utterly unbelievable plot until you realise its based on a true story.
Les Diaboliques. - brilliant thriller. (The 1955 original not the shite remake with Sharon Stone.)

Downthespidersweb · 24/09/2021 20:38

I love the French film Jeux d'enfants. It's titled Love me if you dare in English.

Puppalicious · 24/09/2021 20:40

The Lives of Others, great film.

Puppalicious · 24/09/2021 20:41

Parasite is the best recent one I’ve seen.

trumpisagit · 24/09/2021 20:41

I think Parasite is on Netflix (maybe Prime). Its brilliant.
