The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Well thats me sold on hunt for the wilderpeople, I recall wanting to see it when it was trailed at the cinema and somehow I keep missing it. I couple do with a change of pace after so many creepy Halloween movies lately!

PrismSpectrum · 11/11/2020 14:14

If it's not already come up, Tampopo fits the description apart from the British bit.

A Bunch of Amateurs - brilliant film and the scene on the big stage at the end is one of the most moving I've seen. Gets me every time.

Also Etre & Avoir. Docu film about a French village school for goodness sake and yet a mesmerising little gem. I'm sure teachers would love it.

Goodbye Lenin.
What a glorious gem of a film. It's German, set in East Berlin just as reunification is unfolding. It's a really beautiful, joyful yet tug-on-the-heartstrings type of film with an Amelie vibe without trying or meaning to. The soundtrack is beautiful (Yann Tiersen). And I tear up at the end every time I've watched it. It's so funny, so touching. Wonderful!

TheVanguardSix · 11/11/2020 17:29

Oh and 'Moonlight'! It's just a beautiful film. In my top 5.

Sideways was mentioned. God, I love Sideways. It speaks to me! I am from that neck of the woods. My mom lives where the main character's mother lives. I watch it when I miss home and need a laugh. Total gem of a film .

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 11/11/2020 17:37

Quirky, American, good to watch with a DD is 'Dumplin'.

MrsMiaWallis · 11/11/2020 17:38

Eighth Grade

KiposWonderbeasts · 11/11/2020 17:41

Oh god, Être et Avoir - just wonderful!

Also Spellbound about kids in a national spelling bee.

The Castle means all of my family say “that’s going straight in the pool room”.
Love Wildepeople, love so many of the suggestions here.

I suspect you’ve seen it because after it’s tiny cinema release it for a huge following but Strictly Ballroom is glorious.

One truly international and unbearably beautiful overlooked film is The Fall directed by Tarsem. A tale told in a hospital in silent movie era California by an injured stunt man to a little Russian girl. What he says and what she sees. Absolutely utterly perfect.

DuesToTheDirt · 11/11/2020 18:09

Les Visiteurs is brilliantly funny, though I'm not sure where you can watch it currently.

TheVanguardSix · 11/11/2020 18:23

Oh and another one!!
Poetry.
It's a Korean film and it's just exceptional. It is one of the most beautiful endings of a film I have ever seen. Ever!

FernGilly · 11/11/2020 18:31

Thanks for the great suggestions!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/11/2020 18:33

@1940s

Peanutbutter falcon
Agree - this film made me feel so happy. Everyone should watch this and don't let Shia LeBoufe put you off Grin
TheVanguardSix · 11/11/2020 18:33

Though I am getting away from 'quirky' recommending the films like Moonlight and Poetry.
But yes, Goodbye Lenin and Sideways are both wonderfully quirky films.
The Descendents (same director as Sideways) is a wonderful gem.
Lost in Translation
I'm sure Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has been recommended.
A Serious Man ( I love this film!)
