The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Dogma came to mind for me. Not British but it did include the fabulous Alan Rickman.

@StCharlotte

Sightseers is the weirdest film I've ever seen!
I love this film - it's so dark but and so brilliant.

Another vote for “Sideways”, although you have probably seen it, it’s always worth another viewing (just no fucking Merlot while you watch 😁)
“Keeping Mum” is another good suggestion upthread.
“Le Diner de Cons” (so much funnier than the awful American remake Dinner for Schmucks).

Unfortunately I’m not sure where you can watch these for free (I have Sideways & Diner on dvd).

Great thread and lots of suggestions that I’ll put on my watchlist too.

Dean Spanley immediately came to mind.

When Marnie Was There - Studio Ghibli

Le Placard and Le Diner de Cons, if you are ok with subtitles

Little Miss Sunshine is the least-American American film I've seen...

About time (has Bill Nighy in it ❤️)

DieCryHate · 11/11/2020 08:56

Second Eagle vs Shark
Gentleman bronchos
Bubba ho-tep

Inside I'm dancing: early James Mcevoy movie that sounds depressing but is brilliant!

Once is also a really lovely movie

JamminDoughnuts · 11/11/2020 09:07

Booksmart is great

frumpety · 11/11/2020 09:15

Mon Oncle with Jacques Tati , subtitled and lovely , but old.

@JaneJeffer

God's Own Country
Was just coming on to say this.

Beautiful, mesmerising, best British film I've seen in years.

KenDodd · 11/11/2020 09:20

Safety NOT Guaranteed

MIgZig · 11/11/2020 09:20

Also came on to recommend Parasite - it's the best film I've seen in ages.

And another one that has yet to be mentioned but which makes me cry with laughter is 'The Little Death' by Josh Lawson. Not one to watch with the kids, mind.

fishonabicycle · 11/11/2020 09:24

In Bruges, the station agent, troll hunter,

Just watched and enjoyed Journey to Greenland (Netflix) - French and Greenlandic (subtitled), quirky, funny, and surprisingly poignant in places.

pumpkinpie01 · 11/11/2020 09:38

Just placemarking to read through later

SaffyWall · 11/11/2020 09:46

Can't believe this thread is 8 pages long and no one has mentioned 'Pride' - Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, Imelda Staunton, Paddy Considine and a whole host of others. It's a joy!

Would also add my voice to those recommending Juliet, Naked. (Put 500 Days of Summer on your list too).

Pumpkin314 · 11/11/2020 09:54

Most of the film's that came to mind have been mentioned - Safety not guaranteed, Hunt for the Wilderpeople (hot water bottles will forever be called hottie botties in our house, preferably in a new Zealand accent), Son of Ranbow. I'll add Waitress to the list, it's now a musical which I haven't seen but recall loving the film when it came out, must find that to rewatch! Swiss army man fits the bill I think too - Daniel radcliff as a man who lives in the woods and has a dead body as a best friend

Predestination. It seems strange at first but stick with it & it's a great movie

DanceForMeColin · 11/11/2020 10:48

@User647647 sorry for late response. My DC watched it at 10 and loved it, but be warned there is a lot of swearing in it and a scene where a pig is killed, so it depends if they are OK with blood.

EmmaOvary · 11/11/2020 11:17

Sing Street
Adult Life Skills
Sightseers

Throughabushbackwards · 11/11/2020 11:34

@noblegiraffe the whole film is posted here on YouTube!

This Time Next Year

SillyUnMurphy · 11/11/2020 14:12

Some super films suggested on here. I also really loved Cemetery Junction, On the Edge (Irish not British but still great) and Red Sea Diving Resort (American, on Netflix and a good watch)
