The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

@Jamhandprints

Little Miss Sunshine Juno The Young Offenders
Young Offenders is excellent as was the series. Billy Murphy is hilarious especially when he takes the bus hostage Grin

@Sarahlou63

'A Good Year" with Russell Crowe. Superb - and the tennis scene is hilarious!
One of my favourite ever films (yes, tennis scene is great), I loved the chemistry between MC and RC. And the contrast of wet grey London with sunny, gorgeous Provence.

Anyway I shall now stop piggy backing others recommendations and think of my own!

Green Book is v good (Prime I think?). Marshaala Ali is a very beautiful man.

Pretty much anything feel good with either/both Steve Carell or Paul Rudd, including Clueless.

Promise at Dawn
Beautiful! The most captivating movie I've seen in years

So many great films here (glad to see more love for Etre et Avoir :) )

If you want rental options other than netflix et al, there's lots of more indy / world cinema offerings on the BFI Player - they have a subscription option but we just rent individual films.

QuimReaper · 11/11/2020 23:27

Gosh I can't believe mine haven't been mentioned!

Edge of Seventeen - looks and sounds like a tacky American high school movie (studios should so not be allowed to be in charge of promotion...) but it's actually really touching and hilarious. I believe it was Hailee Steinfeld's breakout role, and she's just fantastic in it, and it has a brilliant performance by Woody Harrelson.

Ingrid Goes West - very quirky, with a brilliantly unhinged Aubrey Plaza obsessed with a brilliantly vapid instagram influencer Elizabeth Olsen.

The Clouds of Sils Maria - not sure how quirky it is but it's got beautiful, spontaneous performances by a Juliet Binoche, Kristen Stewart and Chloe Grace Moretz. It's french and very indie.

None British but you did recant that! All regularly on iPlayer.

Oh also I second Sing Street Smile

I'm late to the party so most of mine have been mentioned - the brilliant Hunt for the Wildepeople, Sunshine on Leith and Young Offenders. I also love The Grand Budapest Hotel. Finding Your Feet was on recently and that was heartwarming, with a great cast. And The Dressmaker, not what I expected but really good.

Didn't know about BFI player - that looks like it's going to be very useful. Thank you.

Also, I completely withdraw the requirement for it being 'probably' British. Particularly as most things I've recommended are French and clearly Aus/NZ do quirky very well too. Grin

I absolutely adored Green Book... Straight in my Top 10 films... Maharshala is excellent... Viggo is gorgeous!!!!
MrsMiaWallis · 12/11/2020 08:05

I didn't like Green Book, far too long.

Phantom Thread?

TreesoftheField · 12/11/2020 08:09

The motorcycle diaries - about young Che Guevara traveling around south America on a dodgy motorbike. Stunning, funny, sad. Just beautiful

Oooh. How lovely is this list of films? I'm endlessly looking for things to watch. I have nothing to add - BiscuitI've seen some of these films and live the ones mentioned so really thrilled. I'll be making a list to work through. Shamelessly taking without giving - sorry not sorry GrinWink

A White White Day

Greektome · 12/11/2020 10:30

An unusual film - not "fun" at all but very good - is "Last Night". About how people face the end of the world.

LolalovesLondon · 12/11/2020 10:32

Watched God’s own country and Peanut butter falcon last night! Loved them!

Thank you for this thread OP!

Blue Jay ❤️

popcornsong · 12/11/2020 10:42

Coast to Coast starring Lenny Henry, Cherie Lunghi, Peter Vaughan, John Shea, Pete Postlethwaite. Absolute British gem with a fab Motown soundtrack. Very funny but unfortunately very hard to find - maybe YouTube.

@Time40 my god into the west is stunning and heartbreaking I must show it to the dds soon

Elderflower14 · 12/11/2020 11:13

This Little Life is very well acted but heartbreakingly sad.. About a premature baby... I was a sobbing wreck at the end... Peter Mullan, Kate Ashfield. David Morrisey...

Took ds2 to see WWDOOH with his best friend... The trailer made it look funny... Unfortunately for ds2 who sadly found his dad when he had died it was not a good film to watch.... 😔 😔😔 😔

The Snapper

Was also going to suggest Sunshine on Leith
