The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

We watched sunlight last night. A Nina Conti film starring her in a monkey suit. I really liked it.

Has anyone mentioned the Spanish film, "The Platform"? it's certainly quirky but not fun or heartwarming.

Twinless.

Following the recommendation on another thread, I just watched Ladies First on Netflix.

It's a British take on the French gender reversal comedy I Am Not An Easy Man - I loved it so much more! I guess English sexism must have a different flavour. I was laughing like a drain at several points; Sacha Baron-Cohen plays 'female-coded' with tremendous style and the rest of the cast is brilliant as well.

Plots with a View.

From 2002, great cast, a quirky comedy set in Wales. Lots of brits doing Welsh accents and Christopher Walken sounding as he always does.

Oh I've seen that it's good.

I came on the thread to recommend Power Ballad! Saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it.

It's a documentary film but I've just watched Turn every page and would highly recommend it. It's about an author Robert A. Caro and his editor Robert Gottlieb. They'd been working together for over forty years. The documentary is made by Gottlieb's daughter. It's not available to stream but you can rent it from Sky, YouTube and Amazon and it's £4 well spent particularly if you enjoyed the documentary on The New Yorker.

@Cherrypi Thank you for adding a documentary film. I love those too, particularly those fascinating, quirky ones 😜

I've just watched "Brassed Off" again. I'd forgotten how bloody brilliant this film is. Set in the decline of the British mining industry in the early 90s, it deals with community, despair, romance - a proper nostalgic Northern film but with a heartwarming feel. The music is brilliant too. Sadly overshadowed by the Full Monty at the time, but actually so much better.

There was a Bill Nighy film recommended by someone in this thread but I can’t find the post. Can anyone remember it?

Please please say which platform you used . I have wasted a lot of time fruitlessly typing titles into Netflix and Amazon prime

Yamyamabroad · 16/06/2026 22:32

I can recommend the free app Just Watch - it tells you where you can find films and TV programmes

On some smart TVs there is a general search facility where you can type in the name of a programme and it will tell you where it is found.
