The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

There is a documentary Children of the Wickerman coming soon - made by the director’s sons about the impact of the film on the family - apparently very moving.

I saw this at a festival almost two years ago with the two Hardy brothers who made it in attendance. Moving wouldn't be the word I'd use, but I can confidently say it was the most uncomfortable Q&A I think I've ever seen.

stilldumdedumming · 20/04/2026 21:23

Ha! I know what you mean! I haven’t seen it but have spoken to people who have. The person I spoke to really liked it. That would have been an early edit I think 2 years ago. It’s an interesting story at least but yes the personalities can be erm…interesting. I have heard that too.

Thanks for this recommendation. I love the” misfits on a mission” type storyline that Scandi dramas seem to do so well.

Mixed by Erry - an Italian film about three brothers living in Naples who started an illegal mix tape business in the 1980s. Really enjoyable.

I've just watched Remarkably bright creatures on Netflix. I loved it.

Me, three! I actually came here to post the same thing at the same time 🙂 I did keep getting distracted by Sally Field's face, though. She'd had enough work done to still look 'old' and expressive, yet way younger than her real age of 79. Clever - if I were ever going to get 'tweaked' and had an unlimited budget, I'd want the name of her practitioner!

JumpingDizzy · 13/05/2026 11:42

@GarlicGrace she looks fab. The male lead is the double of his dad. Seen him in a few things.

waltzingparrot · 15/05/2026 08:54

@inisfree That sounds like my type of film and it's showing on Disney. Thanks for the recommendation.

Watched this a few nights ago in the original Danish and it's hysterical. Extremely dark and does not shy away from difficult themes but still manages (maybe because?) to be rip-roaringly funny at the same time. Not one to watch with the kids but older teens should be able to manage it.

Chronicles of a Wandering Saint (2023) is a quirky and surreal Argentine film.

In a tiny rural village in Argentina, Rita Lopez, a pious yet insatiably competitive woman, decides that staging a miracle could be her ticket to sainthood.

Not a film per session but a TV movie. It was only uploaded in the last week and doesn't seem to be on streaming

BBC screen two from 1986. It's about the silent twins Jennifer and June Gibbons

I’m not sure it would be everyone’s cup of tea, but The Good Boy aka Heel with Stephen Graham. Quite dark but I really enjoyed it.

JamminDoughnuts · 18/05/2026 07:15

i saw Il Postino - The Postman yesterday
Italian film
it was really good

Lunaballoon · 18/05/2026 07:42

Another Italian film - Buen Camino. Funny, heart warming (on Netflix)

GarlicGrace · 21/05/2026 09:18

I don't think anyone's mentioned CODA yet? It's the one about a teenage girl, the only hearing member of a deaf Massachusetts family, whose fishing business is struggling. It's full of drama related to prejudice, the weather, economic exploitation, educational inequality - and absolutely suffused with love.

Won loads of awards. Available on Prime, Apple, Sky and YouTube.

stilldumdedumming · 23/05/2026 19:23

@GarlicGracethat sounds great. From memory is there much subtitled sections? (Dp can’t read and you’d be amazed how much reading there is in film)

GarlicGrace · 24/05/2026 01:50

@stilldumdedumming, there is little spoken dialogue and much subtitling.

The family uses ASL and there's a good emphasis on facial visibility. The film was issued with full audio description, which should be available on Prime/Apple/Netflix.

stilldumdedumming · 24/05/2026 06:28

Ah thanks @GarlicGrace- that makes sense!

We watched Rental Family on Disney last night, we all (adults and teens) really enjoyed it.

A mix of Japanese/English language, starring Brendan Fraser, who was brilliant (I thought).

...should also mention the young girl who plays his 'daughter' was absolutely brilliant too.
