The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Been lurking on this thread since forever, but now happy to make my own suggestion which is Rental Family. An utterly beautiful film and not at all what I was expecting but well worth the watch.

I just watched Watch the Skies which is a Swedish film but in English (spoken not dubbed) on Prime which fits the description.

I may be straying from the brief but ‘everything is going to be great’ starring Bryan Cranston is now on Netflix. Lovely

DiggoryVenn · 21/01/2026 19:18

I saw that @stilldumdedumming but the IMDB score put me off a bit.

stilldumdedumming · 21/01/2026 19:59

@DiggoryVenn it was bittersweet. But lovely and gentle. (I have an overload of action/ blood thirsty films in my house).

I watched “The Great Escaper” last night. It’s probably not really “little” lead is played by Michael Caine. But it is a gem! Much more poignant and thought provoking that it initially sugguests. It had the spirit of a low budget movie. Maybe they spent it all on Michael.

Came here to recommend Nowhere Special too. Such a lovely film. So under rated.

Also "Catherine called Birdy" - great film with Bella Ramsey and Andrew Scott.

Where can I see that please?

Watched a 'Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom' last night. Beautiful film set in the kingdom of Bhutan. Stunning scenery and wonderful acting from the little children.

Which platform?

Which platform?

I watched it on our country's nation channel (not in UK). But according to ChatGPT you can watch it on the following platforms:

Apple TV Store – purchase or rent.
Amazon Video / Prime Video – purchase or rent (region permitting).
BFI Player – rent online.
Curzon Home Cinema – rent online.

If you want older films then give Talking Pictures TV a try. It is a free channel (82 on my Freeview TV). They show lots of old films and TV shows.

I usually record anything starting Jack Hawkins or Richard Attenborough. Also some hilariously bad sci-fi films, one spaceship had curtains and the set wobbled all the time.

If you google any film, it'll come up with where you can watch it.

Edited

Never noticed this channel before! Just switched on and there’s a hilarious film on. Thanks!

@Letmeoutodhere What was the hilarious film please?

Can’t remember now but it was hilarious because it was very very dated more than because it was a good film. I’m going to dip in there now regularly because I do love a good vintage film.

i enjoyed Days of the Bagnold Summer,
Monica Dolan.
perfect bitter sweet

Am currently watching Beau is Afraid which is over 3 hours long on Film4.

Qualifying as "quirky" in a "what the fuck am I watching" way as it appears to be an extended anxiety nightmare. Also in a "Joaquin Phoenix looks.... Age appropriate" sort of way

Watched Days of Bagnold summer tonight. I really enjoyed it. You can tell who's son the male lead is! Thanks for the recommendation.

I just watched a film called"My old ass". It was pretty good. A coming of age kind of film.

There've already been threads on The Life of Chuck, a Stephen King adaptation quite devoid of the creeping fear I associate with King. It's very quirky indeed, utterly charming and affirmative (despite being about the end of the world, lol). Just finished it - Netflix - and hope it wins all the awards it's up for!

Dh fancied that. Is it really depressing?

Absolutely not!

Year of the Dog (2007) written by Mike White (White Lotus) - It's a kind of black comedy/drama about a dog lover (played by the wonderful Molly Shannon) whose life unravels. Clever social commentary, writing much like White Lotus.

Bebravemoise · 05/02/2026 20:36

"I Went Down" - Irish comedy film of the 90s.

Jacobolordy · 25/02/2026 01:02

Love stumbling across this thread.

I'll add Lars and the real girl - poignant and gently funny about a man who loses touch with reality and falls in love with a blow up adult doll.

And northern comfort - depressed English man wants to move to Denmark to go to prison to improve his life. Sounds miserable but really not!
