The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Fallen leaves on iPlayer. It's a Finnish romantic comedy with a very dry sense of humour. It's quite short too. It's subtitled.

Thanks for the recommend. Watched it last night & really enjoyed it.

JumpingDizzy · 06/10/2025 23:04

Watched Fallen leaves...definitely quirky!

Oh yes Hunt for the Wilderpeople was brilliant. Loved that.

Have you watched The Castle? (From 1997)? It’s a brilliantly funny Australian film. Really quirky and laugh out loud funny.

Yes, I've seen that one too, although it was a while ago now. Australia needs to make more funny films!

Happy Big Lebowski GIF

I've just scrolled through all 26 pages to check the ones namechecked and yes
Grand Budapest Hotel, that and any Wes Anderson film, though it's US but famously quirky

So Fantastic Mr Fox (which IS a Christmas film) and Isle of Dogs as well.

UK films Brian and Charles, Still Life as well. I capture the castle was written by the writer behind Call The Midwife. The Bunny and The Bull.

US film The Kid Detective was on film 4 the other night. Bit oddball. Which edges into American oddball which will mean Wes Anderson, or The Coen Brothers. Which means The Big Lebowski

The Librarians on iPlayer. It's a documentary film but is very moving, upsetting and emotional. It's about librarians being targeted by book banning campaigns in the US.

Not really a quirky little gem, more a stonking great high production epic, but I'm watching Nicholas and Alexandra rn and it's sort of impossible to tear myself away

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/10/2025 15:17

I'm watching it too @lalgarh

waltzingparrot · 21/10/2025 21:52

@Lalgarh Is that the 1971 film?

Yes, and it's on iPlayer

Watched a film called 'Green Book' last night. Had never heard of it although it is highly reviewed on IMDB. Absolutely brilliant film.

Cheers for this. Me and dh are massive Mads fans. Can't believe we missed this.

Don't know if I Swear fits the bill but see it if you haven't already.

MIgZig · 11/11/2025 07:48

Has anyone yet mentioned The Holdovers? From 2023, but based in the 1970s and really looks and feels like a film made in that era. Totally plot driven, no wankey Hollywood special effects, brilliant acting and wonderful scenery.

I'd happily watch it again. Good time of year for it, it's a (bittersweet) Christmas movie. And the soundtrack is great too!

JumpingDizzy · 11/11/2025 09:34

Loved the Holdovers.

Also The Choir with Dustin Hoffman. It's called Boychoir in the US.
