The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Does anyone know how i can watch this? It doesn't seem to be available to stream anywhere.

I recently saw the Ballad of Wallis island on its last day at our local cinema. It was good and pretty funny.

I saw one user review by someone who hated it because the plot wasn't exciting enough and moved too slowly. This person thought that the past events should have been portrayed quickly and efficiently in flashbacks. I do not think this person understood or appreciated character-driven films, but if you do, you might really enjoy this one.

It reminded me a bit of Brian and Charles, the film I mentioned earlier. Both are character-driven British films featuring a lonely, eccentric bloke who lives in a remote place and they derive much of their humour from that eccentricity. However, if The Ballad of Wallis Island is considered a low-budget film, than the budget of B&C was minuscule. Also, there's a bit of menace and nastiness in B&C, courtesy of some local thugs. But if you enjoyed The Ballad of Wallis Island, then Brian and Charles is probably for you as well.

Go to a cinema that's showing it?

cromwell44 · 06/08/2025 14:36

@Velvian It's Summer holidays so it's mostly super hero type films at the big chains but it's available at a couple of independant cinemas near me, so try your local ones.

I watched the 2016 film Maudie this week on Prime...It's a true story about Maudie, a Canadian folk artist in 1930s Nova Scotia starring Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins. Beautiful little film, well worth a view.

Sally Hawkins is a fab actress. Have you seen X and Y?

Watched a 'Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom' last night. Beautiful film set in the kingdom of Bhutan. Stunning scenery and wonderful acting from the little children.

Indeed, it's a beautiful one, I loved it. I haven't seen the kids acting so well in a long while! And it was inspired by true stories, I think I like it even more because if this.

Fallen leaves on iPlayer. It's a Finnish romantic comedy with a very dry sense of humour. It's quite short too. It's subtitled.
