The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

I can't stream The Castle. Says unavailable?

Velvian · 14/11/2025 19:08

We watched The Penguin Lessons last week, available on Prime. Highly recommended.

@i’I love the castle ‘tell him he’s dreamin’

I inexplicably find myself watching A Royal Corgi Christmas currently on channel 5.

"Prince Edmond gives his mother a corgi to win her approval and hires a dog trainer Cecily. They bond over the pet, and learn that love can grow in unexpected places".

It is of course Hallmark channel cobblers now shoehorned or rather straddling (in a non sexual way) it's Christmas AND romance themes. I'm mesmerized by Americans trying to affect British aristocratic manners

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris

At last!
I couldn’t believe it wasn’t mentioned - but then realised that the start of the thread pre-dated the film.
Not English, but the Woody Allen film Midnight In Paris is worth a mention.

"Crimes and Misdemeanours" is good

"LA Story" ? Steve Martin ?

Currently watching Lover Come Back on bbc4 .

swaggering advertising exec Rock Hudson is cosplaying as a bearded dorky scientist 🥼 and appears to be in the Foothills of a romance with rival and exec Doris Day.

His beard is currently making him look like The wrongest Action Man ever.

Bollocks he's just shaved it off

Thank you! I love Doris Day/Rock Hudson films. I see it's on iplayer, and so is Pillow Talk. That's my afternoon sorted.

I saw Mrs Harris at the cinema, lovely film. I'm thinking about watching The Holdovers which was recommended above, although it sounds a bit sad.

stilldumdedumming · 22/11/2025 23:10

Oh thank you for The Holdovers recommendation. I had assumed it was one of those films with burping and farting jokes. I have just watched this and I have no idea why I thought this! Lovely!

Has anyone yet mentioned The Holdovers? From 2023, but based in the 1970s and really looks and feels like a film made in that era. Totally plot driven, no wankey Hollywood special effects, brilliant acting and wonderful scenery.

Where can I see it please?

Absolutely no problem. It appears we have a similar taste in films Smile

Lalgarh · 23/12/2025 12:05

This seems to be precision tooled for this thread.

Home Alone crossed with Shirley Valentine. That's sodding Michelle Pfeiffer.

2bh I only found out about it BC the soundtrack has Fleet Foxes doing an Elliott Smith cover
