The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

@Mytholmroyd totally off topic, but as a child we moved from Yorkshire to Lancashire so on trips to see relatives we would go past Mytholmroyd.

One time we collected my cousin who wasn't used to the journey, who asked if we could go through mithelemroyd. I don't think we used the correct pronunciation for years.

😂 it's a tricky one to be sure!

Adult Life Skills , starring Jodie Whittaker is a great film. Definitely a quirky gem.

Ignore that!

I know it's an old thread, but I'd definitely add Kneecap to the list 😀

The fact that this film didn’t ( as far as I am aware) pick up any film awards is an injustice as it’s such a good and funny film.

KiposWonderbeasts · 27/02/2025 19:48

Damned right - it's a cracker!

GiraffeNecked · 28/02/2025 00:34

Watched woman and the sea recently. That’s a lovely film.

Thank you for this recommendation. Watched it today. Such a good film (unless bad language puts you off). I'm going to keep this thread going for ever as new quirky films are made all the time and I need to know about them! My favourite film type.

I really like stop motion animation films and recently watched Memoirs of a Snail. It's fab. 😊

waltzingparrot · 11/04/2025 20:54

@SantasLargerHelper Well, I'll give it a go 😂

We watched this comedy horror film in 1972, and it was old then. It has stayed in my mind since, A Bucket of Blood. Being from the 50s it is not that shocking compared to today, but features beat poets and 'intellectual' artists meeting up in coffee bars. And it is on youtube

I’ve enjoyed a few recommendations on this thread so I thought I’d add another to the mix - Kneecap (Amazon Prime). Be warned there’s lots of sex and drugs, but hey it’s rock n roll after all, or rather Irish hip hop. Highly recommended if you like quirky “rockumentary” type stuff.

TravelMoose · 29/05/2025 05:43

Thursday. Old movie now but absolutely brilliant stuff.

Memoir of a Snail - an Australian claymation film, nominated for an Oscar this year. Outstanding.

"Siege of Jadotville"

I've recently watched Broken with Tim Roth, Rory Kinnear and Cillian Murphy. Great film basically set in a cul de sac and how the families interlink.

I haven't heard of that. I'll give it a go.

Loved the film... Timothy Spalls character was a hoot.
Also loved Teddy Thompson In Your Arms song at the end.
