The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

That lovely film Nowhere Special with James Norton ( Tommy Lee Royce ) is on BBC 2 at 11.15 pm Monday night.
Totally different character to Tommy Lee Royce.
He's a very versatile actor and sooo good looking.

What! Pompeii at 9 and JN at 11.15? I've seen the film at the cinema but might watch a bit before sleep wins.

Just watched The Longest Ride starring Alan Alda - a Nicholas Sparks novel - thought it was going to be a simple romcom but it became a lot more than that. Bittersweet.

We watched a film called 'I give it a year' which was full of British actors. It was an absolute hoot. The scene with the digital photo frame had us both crying with laughter.

Love that film!! Rafe Spall and Stephen Merchant. And Olivia's Coleman is there too! Such a great ending too. Stephen Merchant's role was great as he was being so inappropriate most of the time, it made me cringe. I loved Anna Farris there, she had a great role.

And another one for you, a Finnish film called 'Heavy Trip' https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7220754/
If you can find it with English subtitles it's well worth a watch.

Heavy Trip (2018) ⭐ 7.0 | Comedy, Music

I personally think they ruined it by missing huge chunks of the book out. If you want to see the faithful to the book version.. Watch this..

Watched two good films at the weekend - Memory starring Jessica Chastain, and a British film called Hoard.

One of my favourite novels. The BBC serialised it years ago, I didn't know there'd been a film!

grafittiartist · 09/08/2024 15:40

Thanks for the recommendation. I watched it last night and it definitely fits the 'quirky gem' that I was after.

I use this thread whenever we want to watch a film. Thanks everyone.

Amazon prime are showing 'Lost & Found'. A gentle Irish comedy.
It's the epitome of a quirky gem for me, but I know it won't be to everyone's taste.

I didn't get on with this one tbh, I couldn't see the point of it.

CalicoPusscat · 13/08/2024 01:15

Some oldies:

A rather English marriage with Joanna Lumley and Albert Finney

Also eye of the needle which is on prime at present.

Miles more modern and mainstream but certainly quirky: Side Effects

Just one of those little films all about people but I think the message was 'don't judge a book by it's cover'. I was quite annoyed by the guy begging at the station - if only I'd known.

Saw two quirky gems this week, both on Prime:

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare - loads of killing, but it's of the comic book variety (no gory detail). It's a very fictionalised retelling of the audacious WW2 initiative, Operation Postmaster. The true story's impressive; it's easy to see why Guy Ritchie wanted to make a rambunctious film of it. Renegade Posh Brits Outwit Nasty Nazis And Save The War! Hooray!

Poolman is another bonkers film, starring Chris Pine as an extremely Californian loser who, as an amateur eco-warrior, stumbles over a real conspiracy and does everything wrong. The lovely cast look like they're enjoying every minute.

Jennygentle · 14/08/2024 16:23

Ginger Snaps is an intelligent, feminist horror. I don't like horror generally but I loved it.

newname642 · 21/02/2025 20:43

Just bumping this old thread in the hopes that someone has some quirky new films to add to the list.

Mytholmroyd · 21/02/2025 21:15

Oh I loved the Ministry of Ungentlemanly warfare @GarlicGrace - fast paced and witty with Henry Cavill and Reacher to look at!

Not seen Poolman tho - will check it out!
