The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Watched 'Phantom of the Open' last night with Mark Rylance. Very dry and moving comedy based on a true story. Highly recommend.

Yes he was great in it! Also excellent in the Outfit which was quirky but clever.

The founder about the McDonald's chain very good and interesting

What a brilliant thread!!!

I've already watched Swimming with Men, Dear Frankie and A shine of rainbows and loved all three, especially D Frankie ... though less keen on Brigsby Bear .. and am building a list of more I want to watch.

My favs, which I think others have mentioned are:

NonBrit:

  • Fantastic Mr Fox
  • Hunt for the Wilderpeople (NZ)
  • Jo Jo Rabbit
  • In Bruges
  • Three Billboards outside Ebbing

And Brit:

  • About Time - fabulous!!! Adore Bill Nighy ...
  • Fishermen's Friends
  • The Love Punch - Emma T is magnificent, very funny!!
  • What we did on our holidays - seriously quirky and wonderfully black/faux naif
  • Pride - got to be one of the best gay films ever!
And others I can't remember at the mo, but will post when I do!!

Just bumping this in case anyone has any new suggestions. I've spent many happy hours watching these recommended films but am hoping for more Smile

Since I last posted, I’ve seen Brian and Charles, a film about an eccentric inventor living in a remote village who builds a robot. The film clearly didn’t have a massive budget, but that adds to its charm. It’s a sweet, funny film.

Very Annie Mary

Quartet

The Lady in the Van

One Chance

Fisherman's Friends

Sex Lives of the Potato Men

The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society (the book is great too)

Oh, and how could I forget :

A Private Function (yes it's another Maggie Smith , can't go wrong there )

The Hour of the Pig (bizarre film with a very young Colin Firth set in the 17th century about a pig on trial for murder)

Came back to this thread again tonight. Slowly working my way through..

There is also a film called Hitler Returns which is hilarious and brilliant. Hitler basically wakes up in a garden in the 21st century and becomes a social media star- everyone thinks he is just an actor taking the piss out of how awful Hitler was... until things get dark. Brilliantly done.

It's called "Look Who's Back". Watched this tonight. Particularly loved the nod to Downfall 😄

I give it a year

Just watched The Dig on Netflix. The Jersey Potato Peel Pie thingy is another. Not very much happens in either but they're pleasant enough to watch without blood, death and vicious sexual assault being 'essential to the storyline'.

Seconding both of these! 20th century faux nostalgia, quirks & charm aplenty.

Another to add - Frances Ha starring Greta Gerwig (from about 10 years ago) it's brilliant, watched it last night. If you like early Woody Allen films then you'll love this. Directed by Noah Baumbach and if you like an Adam Driver fix (and Willa from Succession) you'll be very happy. :)

Speaking of foreign films has anyone (including me as I can't find my previous posts) mentioned

Delicatessen (French, post apocalypse sci fi -- vegetarian handyman moves in to a room above a butcher shop)

Babette's Feast (Danish, historial - 2 religious sisters take in a refuge from the French revolution - absolutely stunningfully beautiful)

Wings of Desire (German - invisible angels are all around us and then one of them falls in love and wants to become mortal. Again, absolutely beautiful. Very oddly has Peter Falk who is perfect as another ex angel) (don't bother with the American remake)

Rare Exports (Finnish - violent comedy about a group of Sami reindeer hunters discover the truth about Santa Claus. The little boy central to the story is brilliant. )

Cyrano de Bergerac (French - historical. starring Gerard Depardieu. so funny and lovely and sad - don't watch without tissues as you will blub.) (recently remade with Game of Thones Peter Dinklage - haven't seen that one yet)

Personally I wouldn't bother. The chances of it improving on the perfection of Depardieus' version being so small. And the rhyming translated subtitles are poetry themselves (Anthony Burgess, by the way).

A quirky foreign film is "The Legend of the Holy Drinker".

How about "Jesus of Montreal" ?

Chef with Jon Favreau. It's my happy place.

An American Pickle.

Oh thank you. That's going on this week's watch list - sounds right up my street.

Just out, went to see it at my local Curzon and was a real gem.

Afire, a German film about a writer going to a summer beach location.

Who ever mentioned the film, Dear Frankie, thank you so much (I think)!! I'm a blubbering mess but enjoyed it so much.

That was me... I absolutely loved it... Gérard Butler was practising his songs for Phantom while making it!!

Marilyn's eyes?

It's Italian, a chef and an actress who are undergoing treatment in a mental health facility start cooking for visitors, then they make up reviews and then they, with other patients, open a restaurant.

ouch44 · 05/11/2023 23:37

Loved The American Pickle. The family were moaning that I got to chose as I was "going to chose another rubbish film again". But 3 generations loved this film. Funny and quirky!

JamminDoughnuts · 06/11/2023 04:24

The electrical life of Louis Wain was excellent.

LadyEloise1 · 10/11/2023 17:16

Nowhere Special with James Norton.

A fabulous film
