The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

The Duke.

Absolutely gorgeous heart lifting British film with Jim broadbent and Helen mirin.

SpringisSpinning · 21/03/2023 21:29

@BigMamuh I absolutely love this film.

Don't know if it's been mentioned but we've just watched Bank of Dave on Netflix. Ticks the OP's boxes I think and really enjoyed it.

AiryFairy1 · 21/03/2023 22:13

Oh I loved Bank of Dave - a lovely feel good flick 🥰

If you're looking for a quirky and unique film, I highly recommend "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kaufman, this film explores the complexities of love and memory through a surrealist lens.

Who suggested sight seekers ..what the heck am I watching 😮

Mimijamroll · 09/04/2023 20:06

Sightseers , a very black comedy 😅.
Before watching it I thought it would very much more cosy britcom type fare.

tryandfindmenow · 09/04/2023 21:14

I bloody loved it 😆wild film.

Not read the whole thread and realise it's an old one but I would suggest Their Finest - came out on 2016 with Helen McRory, Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy set in WWII but really quirky and different

balalake · 22/04/2023 07:52

@Mytholmroyd saw the film premiere (Bill Nighy amusing introduction) and agree. Has been on BBC IPlayer, not sure if still there.

Mytholmroyd · 23/04/2023 16:43

Oh wow did you? Love Bill Nighy 😊
I love the song They can't black out the moon that they sing in this film - lived in my head ever since!

waltzingparrot · 24/04/2023 10:53

Thank you to whoever recommended Still Life with Eddie Marsan. That's what I meant by 'doesn't sound great in its synopsis' but it was a very moving gem of a film. I too recommend it.

Tonight, Tues at 11.05 on Film 4, Locke starring Tom Hardy. Not action packed but interesting!

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris

Watched that last night - loved it (especially as I'm a massive fan of Dior from that era if I were rich and slim enough... ❤).

PoorlyDS · 08/05/2023 23:18

Nothing to hide. Netflix. French. Just thoroughly enjoyed it

Caeruleanblue · 19/05/2023 21:13

Just watched Far from the Madding Crowd on BBC Iplayer - not quirky but a good film, this was the 2015 version.

Greektome · 19/05/2023 22:54

"Last Night". It's the end of the world. Everyone knows it. What do they choose to do on their last night? I watched the film decades ago, and I still often think about it.

testingmitb · 20/05/2023 06:38

Watched 'Phantom of the Open' last night with Mark Rylance. Very dry and moving comedy based on a true story. Highly recommend.
