The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

I've seen the Quiet Girl too, probably the most beautiful film I've seen in years!

The Banshees of Inisherin.

Excellent film but not for the faint hearted. Beautiful photography and you gotta love Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.

British film written by Jack Rosenthal. The Chain on ITV X. Half dozen people in the Chain move house on the same day. It's old - early 80s? - but the situation's eternal. Its gentle and funny. Delighted to find it today, really cheered me up.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

I remember seeing it at the time, thanks for jogging my memory. A fine example of Jack Rosenthal's work. Warren Mitchell was excellent in it.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chain_(1984_film) Look at the cast.

Bank of Dave. Netflix. Another cheerful little Brit film.

I'm watching The Atlantic Crossing on Drama channel. Not a film but a series but material is film like. Norway at the start of WW2. Interesting too.

This may have been mentioned but I loved The Dressmaker with Kate Winslet and the always fabulous Judy Davis.

Is that not Blinded by the Light, Sarfraz Mazoor's film, @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads? Or are there two similar films? I loved it, and the book.

Ah yes, you're right!

I loved Priceless!

FallonofDynasty · 04/02/2023 11:38

Sachertorte , is very good. On amazon prime, a German language film so watched with subtitles.

Not British but a quirky little gem of a movie that I'd like to suggest is After Hours. 1985 Martin Scorsese film.

SmudgeButt · 12/02/2023 15:09

Not British but we watched Troll last night on Netflix. Good fun! In Norwegian but with subtitles.

I had thought it was going to be a rehash of Trollhunter which is another Norwegian film from about 25 years back (I think). That is much darker, conspiracy theory, Blair witch kind of film but all based on the myths about trolls which (supposedly) the Norwegians take very seriously.

Hear my Song is one of those movies I think might not get made these days given the plot twist of the mother being seduced?assaulted? by the Locke imposter. If I'm allowed to put that bit to one side there is much to be recommended in the movie, not just the music but the odd array of characters that British movies can do so very well. We saw it when it first came out over 30 years back and still quote some of the lines (crooner Franc Cinatra asks "where does it hurt ya baby?" response "in my ears!")

Peanutbutter falcon

I second that. An absolutely lovely film.
Napoleon Dynamite
Juno
Both American, but fabulous!

Mixedberrygenderfluidmuffin · 13/03/2023 09:16

Already mentioned, but I came on the thread to suggest ‘what we did on our holidays’.
Also love ‘Little Miss Sunshine’.

When did you last see your father based on the book about his relationship with his father by Blake Morrison. I bought the dvd - stars Jim Broadbent, Colin Firth, Sarah Lancashire also has a part.
