The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Great thread. I agree with lots that have been mentioned before including About Time, The Way Way Back, Goodbye Lenin, Chef, and one of my absolute favourite films Little Miss Sunshine.

A few to add that I couldn’t see mentioned:

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The Family Stone (a Xmas film but I just love it any time of year)
Dazed and Confused and the follow up Everybody Wants Some

“Sixty six” and “Blinded by the light”.

Loving this thread!!

My suggestion would be Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself- very bittersweet.

There is also a film called Hitler Returns which is hilarious and brilliant. Hitler basically wakes up in a garden in the 21st century and becomes a social media star- everyone thinks he is just an actor taking the piss out of how awful Hitler was... until things get dark. Brilliantly done.

I can't see that someone has mentioned What We Do In The Shadows (the film). It's definitely of a type that some might not find funny, but if you "get" that sense of humour, it's hilarious.

Favourites of those mentioned:

  1. Lars and the Real Girl
  2. JoJo Rabbit
  3. Eddie the Eagle

August: Osage County.
Bit strange to hear Benedict Cumberbatch doing the accent he does, but some great performances.

Tagging myself in this. I watched God's Own Country yesterday which was excellent but there was a LOT of sex - no problem for me (especially as one of the men is very hot) but I had to keep pausing it when my children wandered in!

Also love the Wilderpeople - one of my favourite films ever I think.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 04/05/2021 09:52

Morvern Callar - a Lynne Ramsay film starring Samantha Morton. I think the word ‘gritty’ applies Grin

Sorry if this has been mentioned but recently watched The St Bernard Syndicate and it was so so so funny and brilliant. It’s in Danish with subs. I think you can watch on Amazon Prime.

Great farce sort of thing. Cringe comedy in an almost documentary style.

HKSW456 · 04/05/2021 10:11

Julia - starring Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave. It's set just before the beginning of world war 2. I think it's based on a true story.

Claire4567 · 04/05/2021 21:17

Oooh, that's just reminded me ItsALovelyDayToday of a brilliant Danish film called Flammen og Citreon (The Flame and the Lemon) based on a true story of two resistance fighters in the Second World War. Not easy to follow unless you can get it with English subtitles.

Just watched Tamara Drew on Netfix, has the wonderful Tamsin Grieg, Roger Allam and Luke Evans in.

Tamara Drew is a favourite above I agree.

Eyesofdisarray · 08/05/2021 16:18

Secrets and Lies
The Emerald Forest
Cinema Paradiso

Ashard20 · 08/05/2021 16:27

Truly, Madly, Deeply - directed by Anthony Minghella ( Also directed The English Patient) with Juliet Stephenson and the wonderful late Alan Rickman. Definitely quirky, romantic, sad and amusing.

Totally agree with In Bruges - the atmosphere is so cold and forsaken and the choice of music really brings out the pathos. I love Colin Farrell in this but Ralph Fiennes and Brendan Gleeson are also excellent.

Big Fish

WrinklesShminkles · 09/05/2021 09:45

Death of Stalin - hilarious and very dark

I know this an old thread, but I’ve just watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople after the recommendation on here. I bloody loved it! 🥰

languagelover96 · 16/01/2022 10:09

West Side Story I loved it.

upinaballoon · 16/01/2022 18:32

A quirky little gem of a film. Mmmm, I'm not sure if it's quirky exactly but 'Mississippi Masala' is a little gem of a film.

SocksAndTheCity · 16/01/2022 20:11

Riders Of Justice.

JulesJules · 16/01/2022 21:05

Haven't read the whole (wonderful) thread, glad to see two of my favourites, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and The Dish.

I've just watched Super 8 which I'd really recommend, and also a real favourite in this house, Breaking Away - if you can find it
