The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Have you seen 'Chef' with Jon Favreau? If not, do so...

Jumpintothefire · 27/02/2021 21:33

I Know Where I'm Going . Old black and white classic from Powell & Pressburger . Lead female character is very niace but that is part of the charm . It's romantic as well .

Secrets and Lies is on TV late tonight.

If you can't stay up do be sure to record it. Brilliant, beautiful, funny and devastating.

How about "The Kidnappers?" It's a 1953 British film (released a year later in the USA as "The Little Kidnappers") about two small orphaned brothers in early 20th Century Nova Scotia who find a baby and decide to keep and raise it because their very stern grandfather refuses to let them have a dog. It's available on Youtube.

Just revisiting this thread to thank @notacooldad for the recommendation of The Intouchables. Watched it last night and it is absolutely brilliant. So moving and touching and funny. One of the best films I've ever seen. It's in French, but you soon forget this as it is so well done even with subtitles it captivates.

Another French film I Got Life is it's English title, the French one is Aurore . The name of the main character, a woman of 50. Short, very funny but moving too. It's on BBC i player.

A other vote for "hunt for the Wilderpeople" I also love Jo Jo Rabbit, (same director I believe?)

BigGreen · 23/03/2021 21:17

The Incredible Jessica James on Netflix is just lovely.

My Octopus Teacher is a documentary but is hugely charming.

BigGreen · 23/03/2021 21:23

Lady Bird and Babyteeth are quirky ish coming of age movies (both on Netflix I think?). Babyteeth you'll need tissues!

BigGreen · 23/03/2021 21:24

Maybe more indie than quirky

Justcashnosweets · 25/03/2021 08:28

Not British, but Little Monsters was fab. It is a zombie film, but don't let that put you off if its not your thing!

minniemoocher · 25/03/2021 08:55

Red Joan starring Judy Dench

minniemoocher · 25/03/2021 08:55

Oh and Edie was brilliant, starring Sheila Hancock

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 28/03/2021 08:14

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 28/03/2021 18:53

Intouchables is unavailable sadly

MyGrassIsBrowner · 28/03/2021 19:05

'The Fall' I dont think it's a British movie but the storyline is brilliant and visually, it's stunning!

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 29/03/2021 06:07

i take it back, Untouchable available,
what a fantastic film,

Bluebells32 · 31/03/2021 20:42

Run Lola Run, it's quirky!

Wherearemymarbles · 05/04/2021 16:12

Truly madly deeply - though I guess most people have seen it!

My beautiful laundrette
My left foot
The Cook, the thief his wife and her lover - Peter Greenaway is definitely very left field
No country for old men
Mrs Brown
The Big Blue
Dead Calm
Remains of the day

Stumbled across another Australian gem called 'Kenny' a few days ago. It's definitely not something I would ever have watched from the description alone (mockumentary about a portaloo operative anyone??).
I was expecting bog standard toilet humour but got a warm hearted, intelligent and dignified character study that manages to combine proper laugh out loud humour with poignancy in a uniquely Aussie way.

I'd love to hear what you think if you watch it!

AiryFairy1 · 07/04/2021 16:52

I loved Kenny!

Another Aussie great is The Castle 🏰

Polestar50 · 08/04/2021 20:31

AiryFairy1
Your Kenny review was a lot more succinct than mine!
Really happy to hear that someone else rates it too. No one I've spoken to so far has heard of it.
Ahhh, lovely Kenny.

Polestar50 · 08/04/2021 20:32

Meant to say - will check out The Castle too. Ta!

grafittiartist · 08/04/2021 21:51

Have just made such a long list- thank you!

Has anyone mentioned In Bruges. Very funny but also moving. One of my favourite films and I don't really like Colin Farrell but he was good in this.
