The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Watched Swimming With Men - fabulous!

This Beautiful Fantastic. Charming and heartwarming 😊

AiryFairy1 · 02/05/2022 20:00

Oh I loved This Beautiful Fantastic!

Recently, on the plane, I watched (& enjoyed more than I expected to) Language Lessons and Here Today.

(I also loved Encanto, but I wouldn’t describe it as a quirky little gem!)

Recently saw Cuban Fury with Nick Frost, missed it when it first came out but it's brilliant.

Petite Maman, probably available now on one of the streaming platforms.

Yes I was just about to recommend What We Did On Our Holidays.

Another British film that I ADORE is Hope & Glory, from the view point of a young boy during WW2.

I was going to recommend Hope & Glory too - one of my absolute favourites

Not sure if these have been mentioned…

Everything is Illuminated
Short Term 12
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Me Earl and the Dying Girl

Nobody ever remembers mine - Letter to Brezhnev. Saw it at the cinema in the 80s, fantastic film. It’s never shown on TV.

Also - Peter’s Friends. It was around the same time as 4 Weddings but so much better IMO.

Mimijamroll · 05/05/2022 13:22

Yes I remember Letter to Brezhnev, with Margi Clark iirc

newnamethanks · 08/05/2022 14:12

Havent RTFT so apologies if already mentioned. Lots more free films uploaded last week onto Prime, including Cinema Paradiso. If you haven't seen it, watch it and fall in love.

Locke with Tom Hardy.
Mostly him on the phone - brilliant in my view.

Springduckling · 05/07/2022 18:01

Haven't rtft so hopefully not a duplicate but watched Man Up last week and it was quirky, funny and British. Loved it

Love, honour and Obey

This

'You can't steal a warehouse'

Cattenberg · 12/07/2022 00:44

Not British, but I love What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.

waltzingparrot · 12/07/2022 01:23

OMG, I'd completely forgotten about this thread I started back in the 2nd lockdown. Spotted it in Active Threads. I watched loads of the recommendations at that time and then I suppose life sort of started again post-lockdown and we went out instead of staring at the telly.

So glad you are still finding quirky films to add. I'm going to restart 'Friday Night is Movie Night' in my house, start rebuying the popcorn and watch all the later recommendations.

Thanks all.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/11/2022 20:55

recommendations are always good!

Sunshine Cleaning is great.

But needs a TW: a lot of suicide content/story
