The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Blatant place-marking.

On Australia day I went looking for an Australian film. I found myself watching, "I am mother", it's sci fi but don't let that put you off.

@garlictwist

Placemarking. Although I'm afraid to say I really disliked Juno.
Loved it when I first saw it, despised its knowing tweeness when I rewatched it years later.

The Dish was great, so was Safety Not Guaranteed.

I watched a Swedish film last night called Britt Marie Was Here which totally caught me off guard, low key and lovely about a woman whose husband has an affair and she ends up coaching a kids football team (much better than it sounds!)

I’ll add in Local Hero, Be Kind Rewind and Waffle Street

overnightangel · 15/02/2021 05:39

Britt Marie ... may be on iplayer , it was on bbc4 last night

@DesperatelySeekingSunshine

If you don’t mind subtitles DH and I really enjoyed Goodbye Lenin. It’s set in former East Berlin and is about a family who’s mother wakes up from a coma. They don’t want to give her any shocks, so they pretend that the Wall never came down. Doesn’t sound like much, but has that lovely gentle funny quirky feel to it
Seen this, it’s fantastic 👍🏻

I’ve just rediscovered this thread, despite having contributed to it when it first started. I’ll add

Paper Planes - wonderful family movie, that champions the underdog. The main characters are school children - sort of 12/early teens I think. The DC watched it when they were about 6 and 9. We all loved it. Australian. It’s on Amazon.

Lad - Mizzly, very British coming of age story based in, and filmed in, the Yorkshire Dales. Free on Amazon Prime.

Soft Top, Hard Shoulder - comedy road movie staring a very, very young Peter Capaldi. Available on BlueRay and YouTube.

And really, really old school -
I watched Gregory’s Girl with the dc (12,9) recently. They enjoyed it, struggled to cope with the idea of there being no text/messaging possibilities!

Someone above recommended Love Simon.
It was on TV last night, Film 5, Channel

  1. Sure it was a 4, so should be downloadable for a while.

Keeping Mum

SpringisSpinning · 20/02/2021 00:54

A private function.
Utterly brilliant. Quirky, Maggie Smith is her usual sensational self in it.

Love keeping mum, hunt for the w people. Adore wes Anderson films.

The Grand Hotel Budapest was a pleasant surprise to me but no idea if British.

Orpheline · 20/02/2021 08:17

@DenisetheMenace

Les Intouchables
Aka 'Untouchable', on Amazon. Have to watch this at least once a year.
SmudgeButt · 20/02/2021 15:12

I love a good hockey movie. And please note I mean the game played on ice! (the other sort is field hockey to me)

So you should watch....
Slapshot (stars Paul Newman a bit dated but so strange in bits)

and my favourite strange movie that has hockey in it...
Perfectly Normal
This stars Robbie Coltrane but I think everyone else in it is Canadian. And I think I know every location in it as I was living there at the time.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfectly_Normal

Or for something different from Australia try Starstruck. The syncro swimming scene with toy sharks is priceless.

SmudgeButt · 20/02/2021 15:16

Or outright weird - a Swedish friend insisted that I watch her favourite "Montenegro". (not to be viewed with children)

SorrelForbes · 20/02/2021 15:18

The Goodbye Girl

They are all pretty old but fantastic.

Agreed, Goodbye Lenin is fantastic.
