The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Elderflower14 · 12/11/2020 19:29

The Worlds Fastest Indian starring Anthony Hopkins...

I liked ' Where you're meant to be' it is a documentary following Aidan Moffat ( from Arab Strab) travelling through Scottish communities putting a modern interpretation on folk songs much to the disproval of Sheila Stewart, a renowned traditional folk singer.

@DanceForMeColin thank you so much for recommending Hunt for the Wilderpeople, watched it last night, an absolute delight!

MiniTheMinx · 13/11/2020 09:11

I watched the Castle last night. Strange little film. I laughed. DH laughed more, and he has a very strange sense of humour. Thank you whoever recommended this.

There's a French film that me and my friends loved called The intouchables. A about a disabled guy that needs a personal helper and the job centre send a guy that doesn't want the job but has to go for the interview to carry on getting his benefits.
I've also seen an Indian remake of the film, that was really funny as well!

There's a Hollywood re-make called The Upside

Bryan Cranston is the wheelchair bound employer and the eternally irritating Kevin Hart as the companion/carer.

HelloDaisy · 13/11/2020 18:16

Shooting Fish.

Prettysunset · 13/11/2020 20:59

Hello! Any chance if you putting which platforms you are watching these on, please? Sorry, I know that’s really lazy! Need heartwarming and easy watching for healing...

JamminDoughnuts · 13/11/2020 22:17

I am enjoying journey to Greenland on Netflix, thanks for the suggestion

AgnesQueenofSorrow · 14/11/2020 21:36

Boy. One of the best movies ever.

FixItUpChappie · 14/11/2020 21:56

I really enjoyed that movie "Knives Out" with Daniel Craig + ensemble. Fun movie.

Thirtyrock39 · 20/11/2020 15:41

We watched 1917 last night and were hooked

I quite enjoyed ‘Goodbye Lenin’ though I thought it showed the former GDR through rose tinted spectacles. (Also gratuitous vomiting scenes but then I’m an emetophobe.)
There are some excellent films set in East Germany, for example:

Lives of Others
Barbara
The Legend of Rita
Sonnenallee
The Tunnel.

All are available with subtitles.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 20/11/2020 16:26

Big Eden
The Half of It

Both gentle, heartwarming films set in very rural America.

SerendipityJane · 20/11/2020 16:28

The Gods Must Be Crazy

sallyjuliet · 20/11/2020 16:41

The Peanut Butter Falcon on Netflix

Oneearringlost · 20/11/2020 16:53

Placemarking for tonight .

We were surprised by The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
Nicole Kidman
Its a horror without jump scares, makes it even more horrific.
Stick with the unusual interactions, after an hour it starts to make sense.
Based on a Greek tragedy by Euripides.
Deeply unsettling

FatArse123 · 01/12/2020 15:33

Can you ever forgive me? Very sweet and gently moving. In a similar vein, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool.

GlumyGloomer · 01/12/2020 15:55

Not read the whole thread but if it hasn't been said then A Town Called Panic. Belgian stop motion, totally barmy and absolutely hysterical.

Rawmum30 · 07/12/2020 20:46

Not particularly quirky, but loved August Rush...
An ancient film (reworked) brill soundtrack, is Metropolis.....
Must mention nine and a half weeks.

StCharlotte · 19/12/2020 10:40

I have saved this thread and keep coming back to it. As a result we watched Comfort & Joy last night on Amazon which then brought up similar types of films. So we then watched Caught in the Act which was very sweet and funny (and so lovely to see Annette Badland looking gorgeous and with a romantic interest for a change!).

Jennygentle · 19/12/2020 10:47

I have some ‘classic’ suggestions:

Smashing Time on YouTube.
It fits the bill entirely and stars the lovely Rita Tushingham.

Georgie Girl.

Green for Danger

The Green Man

Throughabushbackwards · 19/12/2020 10:48

OMG @SerendipityJane my brother and I used to watch The Gods Must be Crazy on repeat! Thanks for reminding me about it. Great little film.

Wafflehouse · 19/12/2020 17:51

Glad I found this thread I needed inspiration for tonight rather than spending half an hour looking for something then giving up like we usually do.

Lots of recommendations for Juliet, Naked on here, I was really disappointed by it but then I did watch it after reading the book and I didn’t think it really translated to film very well. And I usually like Ethan Hawke and Chris O’Dowd.
