The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Watched Juliet, Naked last night and blooming loved it! What a fantastic thread!

Now all I need is for one of you to make a spreadsheet of all the recommendations and where I can watch them, and my day will be complete Grin (I don’t ask for much)

I think all my recommendations have been made already. I love The Dish (Australian and based on a true story, gentle joy), Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and so many more.

I always think I prefer a good series to a film, but that’s just because so many films rely too much on money and not enough on the script.

Films I've enjoyed recently - Private Life, The Rest of Us, Outside In, Still Mine, Temple Grandin, Maudie.

Wish you were here? Amazing, quirky very very funny and moving Brit coming of age drama based on the early years of the famous madam Cynthia Paine.
Personal services- the unofficial follow up starring the incredible Julie Walters as a now adult madam with a business catering to older gentlemen with particular requirements. Again hilarious and also moving in places.

Hidden Figures is a heartwarming film. Great female central characters.

My favourite from this year:

Days of the Bagnold Summer
Eternal Beauty
The Personal History of David Copperfield

There is a brilliant Julie Walters film on You Tube... The British Title is My Beautiful Son the American title is Strange Relations... The American actor Paul Reiser is in it too... Really really worth watching....

The Brothers Bloom - with Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo..

An absolutely delightful little film. Both me and DP have really enjoyed watching it.

Ah great thread. I get all my best film ideas from MN!

Can absolutely second:
Tanpopo
Delicatessen
Garden State
Personal Services
Invictus
Goodbye, Lenin
Dogma

Haven't yet seen mentioned:
Chasing Amy (prefer this to Dogma, has some of same characters)
I Heart Huckabees (2004)
Shall we dance? (1996, Japanese, by Masayuki Suo – if you can get it anywhere).
Eight women (2002, French, by François Ozon)
Greenfingers (2000, British)
Eat, Drink, Man, Woman (1994, Taiwanese, Ang Lee)
A Month in the Country (1987, British, about two WWI veterans who meet while one is uncovering a church mural. Very soothing, with a youthful Colin Firth.)

PerkingFaintly · 12/11/2020 17:14

Also:
Wimbledon (2004, British, with Kirsten Dunst & Paul Bettany)

Forgot to say Olympia Dukakis has a small role in it...
JW got Best Actress BAFTA for it too!

nosswith · 12/11/2020 17:28

Frances Ha- Greta Gerwig's breakthrough, with Mickey Sumner (daughter of Sting)

HMSSophie · 12/11/2020 17:35

Ok in return for some fab suggestions I give you:

Dead in a week. Funny
The Giant. Quirky and sad
The Village. Really weird and medieval
Mr Holmes. Sad and heartwarming

HMSSophie · 12/11/2020 17:43

And "the lunch box" is Indian and absolutely delightful

GoudaGirl · 12/11/2020 17:46

Lars and the Real Girl- very sweet. With Ryan Gosling.
Might be a bit old for a 10 year old though. Its really about mental health but charming and sweet.

Spudina · 12/11/2020 17:48

Not British but there is a lovely, quirky French film about a typewriting competition set in the 1959. It’s a gem. It looks beautiful.

Spudina · 12/11/2020 17:48

Helps if I put the name on. It’s called Populaire.

LittlePearl · 12/11/2020 17:50

Little Miss Sunshine
Lars and the Real Girl
Keeping Mum
Another Year
Fargo (though very gory)

Violetparis · 12/11/2020 18:00

Once - Musical about a busker in Dublin
Juno
Big Fish - Albert Finney and Ewan McGregor, quirky though.
Juno

French film 'The Untouchables ' which is about a man who reluctantly takes a job as a carer for a disabled man. Wonderful.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 12/11/2020 18:09

Oh yes how could I forget Hidden Figures? Wonderful film.

hellswelshy · 12/11/2020 18:09

Sorry, The Intouchables.

HighNetGirth · 12/11/2020 18:13

Oldies, Frenchies, Miscellaneous:
Gold-diggers of 1933
Monsieur Hulot's Holiday
Up Pompeii!
Tatie Danielle
My Life as a Courgette

ReadySteadyBed · 12/11/2020 18:31

Yes I was just about to recommend What We Did On Our Holidays.

Another British film that I ADORE is Hope & Glory, from the view point of a young boy during WW2.
