Anyone actually going to watch it on the strength of this? I'm only interested because Miranda is in it, playing Mrs Elton I'm assuming.

Oh of course!!!! Thank you so much Cooroo Grin She's great. She had the right level of anxiety and neurosis for Miss Bates IMO

Sophie Thompson played Miss Bates in the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma.

ageingdisgracefully · 24/02/2020 20:36

I like Sophie Thompson as an actor but thought Miranda did Miss Bates really well, and rather poignantly.

I was expecting Mr Woodhouse to be more of an invalid, and Jane Fairfax to be more delicate.

And Knightley was fair! I imagined him dark, and rather broody. And older.

I thought the Box Hill scene was done well but the scene between K and E at the end dragged.

And Frank Churchill IS fair in my mind's eye. I didn't think the actor who played him was good-looking enough. (Wasn't he the one who was accused of offing his barrister in something that was on quite recently?).

All round, better than I thought it was going to be.

Ocies I'm confused now which version did Tamsin Grieg play Miss Bates in then?

Watched it at the weekend with DD - even DH came but he wasn't overly enamoured so is watching 1917 with a friend today Grin

DD loves Miranda Hart. We kept laughing every time she said "such" as we were waiting for her to say "such fun" but she kept saying other nouns instead. I wonder if the writers did that on purpose as a nod to her.

I loved it especially the fire screen bits with Bill Nighy and the hen pecked Mr Knightly married to Isabella. I did laugh when the baby filled its nappy and Isabella wanted to call the Dr - didn't she have 4 children??

So many familiar face though which made it quite hard to concentrate as I kept seeing Charles (from The Crown) when Mr Elton came on screen and the army guy actor who played Frank Churchill.

"which version did Tamsin Grieg play Miss Bates in then?"

A series with Romola Garai as Emma & Jonny Lee Miller as Knightley.

diddl · 25/02/2020 16:57

In the version with Sophie Thompson as Miss Bates, her mum, Phyllida Law played Mrs Bates!

I liked the Frank Churchill in the Kate Beckinsale version.

MargotB7 · 25/02/2020 17:05

I loved it but I do like Johnny Flynn.

Fairenuff · 25/02/2020 17:18

I think the actors who played Frank Churchill and Mr Knightley should have swapped roles. Frank was supposed to be gorgeous and charming and Knightley more proper and sensible.

I think Bill Nighy would make a good Captain Wentworth (although probably too old now). Mr Woodhouse was supposed to be a worrier and fretter but Bill just played him grumpy. Mind you, Bill has never read any Austen.

diddl · 25/02/2020 17:30

"I think the actors who played Frank Churchill and Mr Knightley should have swapped roles. Frank was supposed to be gorgeous and charming and Knightley more proper and sensible."

Isn't Knightley also supposed to be good looking though?

Fairenuff · 25/02/2020 17:36

Yes they are both good looking but I think Frank has the edge in looks although clearly not in morals.

diddl · 25/02/2020 17:39

I suppose I don't think that the other guy is good looking enough to play Knightley, let alone ChurchillBlush

ppeatfruit · 26/02/2020 08:47

Bill Nighy is much too old to play Capt Wentworth IMO.

I love the bit in Emma where her Dad frets about people eating wedding Cake. (Miss Taylor's) He tries to stop his visitors from eating it!

Saw it yesterday. Quite enjoyed it, although I kept comparing bits of it to the GP film, rather than just watching it Hmm
Love Bill Nighy.

Have always thought that Knightley should be dark haired and older, but that's not a slight on Jonny Flynn, who I like.
Agree - what the hell was that with the nosebleed Confused
Knightley running all the way back to Emma's house after the ball was a bit odd aswell.

kazzaD66 · 26/02/2020 09:27

Btw, I know Johnny Flynn is 36 and, therefore, the right sort of age to play Knightley, it's just that he doesn't look that age, but younger Confused

ppeatfruit · 26/02/2020 12:59

I agree about JF (saw a pic of him) he looks about 27 Grin Is he a good actor?

I've only seen him in this, Vanity Fair and Love Sick. I like him. He does look young.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 26/02/2020 13:40

Is he very handsome in the movie? The photo with him looking brooding makes me feel all fluttery Grin

diddl · 26/02/2020 19:35

I could watch Johnny Flynn watching paint dry!

ppeatfruit · 27/02/2020 08:50

Ooooh I'll have to watch the film now Grin

OP posts:
Igneococcus · 27/02/2020 11:11

I'm going to see it tomorrow with dd (15) who, I think, has a bit of a crush on Johnny Flynn. He is very high up in her Spotify playlist. Really looking forward to seeing it.

diddl · 27/02/2020 12:53

"who, I think, has a bit of a crush on Johnny Flynn."

If so, she'll have a bigger one after seeing this!

Igneococcus · 27/02/2020 14:11

Quite possibly diddl Smile

Aridane · 29/02/2020 23:23

There is no guarantee it will ever be on Netflix. That's not how it works. It's more likely that it will never be on Netflix.

You will be able to rent or buy it it in a few months on amazon, iTunes etc.

It’s freely available online on the major sharing sites. I watched it online a few weeks ago

ppeatfruit · 01/03/2020 09:05

Oh thanks Aridane Grin
