Anyone actually going to watch it on the strength of this? I'm only interested because Miranda is in it, playing Mrs Elton I'm assuming.

I saw it this morning and really enjoyed it. I've seen all the film and TV versions, and had to study it as an A level set text. It's a fun entertainment version for sure, and takes a few liberties with the plot, but it's a visual treat, the costumes are wonderful and I really enjoyed the music too. Good for a couple of hours of escapism.

ppeatfruit · 16/02/2020 15:59

Dear Schady I'm well as I hope you are. Grin

Was the film at t the cinema Rhubarb ?

I've always liked Miranda totally Did they change the character of Miss Bates to suit her?

cushion Yes it's a comedy with a little seriousness I suppose. (I'm open to disagreements of course)

Quill I'll get dh to look at the relevant sites , I'm a bit of a technophobe!

Johnny Flynn is so talented it's crazy!

Anyone watch Detectorists?

ppeatfruit · 16/02/2020 16:38

No, sorry to sound ignorant diddl I probably know his face but not his name I haven't seen Detectorists.

AlexaShutUp · 16/02/2020 16:39

Watched it yesterday. Had a few quibbles but overall I really enjoyed it.

diddl · 16/02/2020 16:43

He was in something called Lovesick, also Genius.

He wrote the theme song for Detectorists & was briefly in it in a talent show playing the song.

Plays quite a few instruments & doesn't have a bad voice either.

Half brother of Jerome Flynn, I think.

diddl · 16/02/2020 16:49

Detectorists theme

Rhubarb01 · 16/02/2020 17:05

@ppeatfruit yes I saw it at the cinema.

ElfrideSwancourt · 16/02/2020 17:25

I've just seen it - really enjoyed it. The costumes are gorgeous, as is Jonny Flynn, and Callum Turner is a great cad!

I thought Miranda was excellent as Miss Bates - the character wasn't changed at all.

TildaKauskumholm · 16/02/2020 17:29

That Miranda is in it would put me right off.

GorillaAlwaysWin · 16/02/2020 17:39

Just seen it and it’s surprisingly watchable. Mr Knightley is the best thing. Emma is okay, Harriet is brilliant. Costumes are beautiful but on the whole it’s slightly too glossy. Miss Bates doesn’t look poor but Miranda Hart is good. Not enough of Jane and Frank. Music is fantastic, lovely mix of classical and folk, no hideous anachronisms.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/02/2020 18:45

Miranda is wonderful Tilda.

I'd watch her reading the phone book

FuzzyPuffling · 16/02/2020 18:50

Bung ho lovelies!

I'm off to see it tomorrow. Looking forward to it, if only that it makes a change from the rufty tufty films that seem to be churned out every week!

Fairenuff · 16/02/2020 21:21

They missed out loads of the plot. I think if you hadn't read the book or seen earlier versions, you wouldn't have a clue what was going on.

ageingdisgracefully · 17/02/2020 08:03

The Box Hill bit has survived though? Or would that be spoiling? Hmm

TheMarzipanDildo · 17/02/2020 08:13

I’ve often thought the best version of Emma is Clueless

ppeatfruit · 17/02/2020 08:16

Does he play Knightley ?

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 17/02/2020 08:26

Right, Iam an idiot [blush Blush I have a copy of the Radio Times in front of me and there is a 2 page spread promoting the damn film !!!!!! With pictures of all the main characters!!!!!! So Johnny (looks like Marlon Brando) Flynn IS Knightley but I would say, although he is of course dishy, he's too young for the role. And why do they give upper class Georgian girls fake tans???? It was certainly NOT fashionable then!

ppeatfruit · 17/02/2020 08:34

Hello to Fuzzy , [waves] We Strictly fans have the best POSSIBLE taste Grin

Yes Iam a Miranda fan too ! She's obviously marmite.

OP posts:
diddl · 17/02/2020 08:51

Johnny Flynn is 36-that's about right for Knightley isn't it?

ppeatfruit · 17/02/2020 09:09

Yes it is diddl Blush everyone looks young nowadays Blush

Fairenuff · 17/02/2020 11:11

Yes they do the Box Hill scene but I think because some plot scenes are so glaring in this adaptation (like the incident at the dance - trying not to give too much away here), the subtleties have been missed or left out. For example, there's no BLUNDER or DIXON. And the nose bleed was very unexpected! I'm not sure what the purpose of that was.

ppeatfruit · 17/02/2020 12:08

Faire Producers seem to love DRAMATIC SCENES , e.g nose bleeds\chicken killing, which to be fair does happen in the book ( I don't know if you listen to the Archers) which is suffering under heavy handed dramatics at the moment. It seems to me that they feel that there has to be "drama" or it's not acceptable to the youth.

OP posts:
WheresThatCatGoneNow · 17/02/2020 12:30

Hmm yes, ppeatfruit, I'm fed up of the heavy handed 'drama' in The Archers too ☹
