Anyone actually going to watch it on the strength of this? I'm only interested because Miranda is in it, playing Mrs Elton I'm assuming.

But in the film she is not particularly beautiful (I know that is open to interpretation) and they made her do a really silly running action that annoyed me, and she simpered a great deal. I couldn't work out quite what her redeeming feature (and hence her interest to Emma) was supposed to be! (Although I liked the bit where Knightly rescued her at the ball, when she had such a snub from the beastly Elton. Who was splendidly beastly in the film)!)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/02/2020 19:22

Oh, good!

I love a beastly Elton. (In the same way that I love a vain and yet obsequious Mr Collins)

FuzzyPuffling · 19/02/2020 20:32

Definitely parallels there schady. JA writes such slimy clergymen!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/02/2020 08:32

Of course, a "call" from God wasn't the requirement for the priesthood in those days.

It was a cushy number offered to younger or not very bright sons (even he can't cock this up - ll he has to do it read a service book) and useless reprobates who've exhausted all other possibilities (buy him a nice living - he's no good for anything else). Often they would have a curate that they could pass the actual work to. Gave them a lot of free time to schmooze for a bishopric . . .

ppeatfruit · 20/02/2020 08:51

Oh yes I love JA's slimy clergymen too. (obsequious, if you can spell that you ain't thick *Schady !!)

I reckon Alan Cumming's the best so far. Fuzzy If you reckon he's better in this film I'll have to see it !

I would say that autocorrect is my friend ppeat, except that we all know that isn't true - autocorrect is a domineering bastard that tries to ruin my life and make me look a twat (and often succeeds).

I spelled "obsequious" ALL BY MYSELF!

FuzzyPuffling · 20/02/2020 13:46

We know about your troubles with autocarrot.

I think a speach is defiantly requrired.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/02/2020 14:34

Grin

I can't help but notice that Fuzzy, following her generous bestowal of a medal upon myself, has been at the gin.

This is ver' renasble - so have moi!

ppeatfruit · 21/02/2020 08:53

I admit that I have an English dictionary at my right hand while on here, I had to look up that particular spelling !!!! Autocorrect is nothing but a load of BALLderdash IMO and E.

I have NOT been on any alcoholic beverage. DH is on an early Lent, we (he) thought that pancake Day was THIS week Ha ha ha Grin

I loved the Gwyneth/Ewan version. Blush Not a patch on Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility, of course.

You know you're getting old when they are remaking your fave movies (Little Women!) for the next generation!

Defenestratethecat · 21/02/2020 09:34

Saw this at the cinema and really enjoyed it.

Casting Miranda Hart as Miss Bates is genius, she is really good in the part and her height just magnifies her awkwardness compared to all the tiny trim little misses.

Johnny Flynn is very easy on the eye but JA's heroes all have dark hair. It's the law. He is a bit too soft in his declaration I think, and I don't know what the nosebleed was about either, bit odd. He was Dobbin in the TV Vanity Fair.

Loved all the farce surrounding the firescreens.

Bill Nighy as Mr Woodhouse wasn't silly enough but enjoyed his performance immensely, also John Knightley's.

The settings and costumes were superb - didn't recognise it at the time but the Weston's house is Poldark's Trenwith.

Immeasurably better than the Paltrow and Beckinsale versions. Anya Taylor Joy a much better actress and very striking - I first remember her from The Miniaturist which I loved for it's calm sparseness.

There was so much missed out, but what can you do in a 2 hour film - particularly missed the Harriet stuff, the riddles and the silly collection of romantic discards (plaster etc) and agree with PP that the Frank Churchill/Jane Fairfax story didn't get enough attention.

But, I enjoyed it very much, considering I was supposed to be watching Little Women but went into the wrong screening by accident Grin.

ppeatfruit · 21/02/2020 13:34

Defenestrate What firescreen business? Funny to miss some details out and put in stuff that isn't in the book!!!

I will watch it when I can.

Borneo I heard S &S on the radio recently and they missed out Margaret!!! I loved the Ang Lee \Emma Thompson film of it too.

Gin? Moi? At least I can spell Gin.

The firescreens made me smirk a bit and I thought Bill Nighy was lovely in the part.

Defenestratethecat · 21/02/2020 14:57

ppeat, just a bit of silliness involving Mr Woodhouse - you will have to wait and see...……..

ppeatfruit · 22/02/2020 09:48

Oh it IS in the book sorry Blush it's the Cole's who didn't ask Emm to their party because they didn't have a good enough firescreen for her Dad !!!!! She was saying she wouldn't go if they asked her because they were in "TRADE" gasp Grin But she really wanted to go because Frank Churchill was.

I can’t think there will ever be a better Harriet than Samantha Morton in the KB version. You only have to see her as Jane Eyre, too, to see what a fantastic and versatile actress she is.
And IMO while I do like Miranda H, I can’t see her ever doing better as Miss Bates, than the peerless Prunella Scales.

ageingdisgracefully · 22/02/2020 17:07

Once you've got your ideal Miss Bates in your head, it's very difficult to shake it off, isn't it? I agree about PS - genius.

I'm the same with David Bamber's Mr Collins. Nothing compares.

Cooroo · 22/02/2020 23:02

I need to see this because it's my favourite book - despite studying it for A level.

If you want a real treat, try to get hold of the audio book read by Prunella Scales - she is perfect in absolutely every word.

ppeatfruit · 23/02/2020 10:17

I've forgotten the name of the actress who plays Brian and Jenny's absent daughter in TA she was a brilliant Miss Bates in Gweneth P.'s film (I think it was her film).

colouringinpro · 23/02/2020 10:29

Saw it last night with Dd and really enjoyed it. I was very happy they left out some of the imo slightly irritating stuff with Harriet - riddles, souvenirs. Loved the use of colour and Mr Knightly grew on me Wink

Ocies · 23/02/2020 10:45

I saw this yesterday with dh. I wasn’t sure what to expect but actually really enjoyed to. The costumes are amazing, possibly a bit too amazing. The soundtrack is brilliant though, a really good mix of folk songs and classical. On the whole it was a good way t9 pass a cold and damp Saturday afternoon.
