Anyone actually going to watch it on the strength of this? I'm only interested because Miranda is in it, playing Mrs Elton I'm assuming.

Miranda Hart was very good, wasn't she?

The Box Hill scene & she's making excuses for Emma.

I suppose Emma wasn't being deliberately nasty, just trying to impress Frank Churchill that nothing else occurs to her.

But this is why I wonder what Knightley sees in her-she just comes across as young, vain & thoughtless.

Then he's impressed because she visits Muss Bates the next day?

She should have apologised on the spot!

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2020 09:30

Yes but she IS young and tries hard to make amends for her thoughtlessness. She's much more intelligent (though hasn't got the concentration to be much of an academician) than the others in his locale and he 's always loved her.

I will try to see it for Miranda's Miss Bates. Emma really does feel sorry for her pert unkindness afterwards and Miss Bates is forgiving. I like the way JA writes the scene in her home..

Miranda was good

But the movie laid it on too thick with everyone constantly crying or in the verge of tears

I would have expected a slightly more stiff upper lip approach Grin not this constant wobbly lip business Grin

diddl · 05/03/2020 12:37

Well yes she is young & that shows it-I suppose I would have thought it would make him realise that he wanted someone older!

But she seems to be the only suitable one about!

ppeatfruit · 06/03/2020 16:38

This is an interesting thread ,I'm off line for 2 weeks now . See you all when I get back or not as the case may be!! Thank you for your contributions Grin

Saw it yesterday and didn't think much of it. The casting is terrible. Bill Nighy is totally wrong for Mr Woodhouse, as Miranda heart is for Miss Bates. The story isn't explained properly so a lot of it is lost.

upinaballoon · 16/01/2022 18:43

@diddl

I don't like the look of the actress paying Emma-

But Johnny Flynn as Knightley-oh my word!

Bill Nighy as Emma's dad?-maybe OK.

But did I mention Johnny Flynn??

Diddl, I know this is an old thread. Are you aware that there is a remake of the old film 'The Man Who Never Was'. It is called 'Operation Mincemeat' and was due out this month but has been postponed until April, I believe. Of course it is miles from a Jane Austen adaptation but the actors include a Charles Musgrove, an Elinor Dashwood, a Lizzie Bennett's auntie, two Mr. Darcys and a Mr. Knightley.
upinaballoon · 27/02/2022 12:59

@kazzaD66

Btw, I know Johnny Flynn is 36 and, therefore, the right sort of age to play Knightley, it's just that he doesn't look that age, but younger Confused
I wasn't looking for this, but I found it, in 'Emma', by the woman herself, Jane Austen:- She was more disturbed by Mr. Knightley's not dancing, than by anything else. There he was, among the standers-by, where he ought not to be; he ought to be dancing, not classing himself with the husbands, and fathers, and whist-players, who were pretending to feel an interest in the dance till their rubbers were made up, so young as he looked!-He could not have appeared to greater advantage perhaps any where, than where he had placed himself. His tall, firm, upright figure etc. etc. etc. So THAT'S where Autumn de Wilde got her idea of a young-looking Mr. Knightley from. Grin

I haven't read the whole thread, the latest Emma film was quite good, BUT what was Emma's nose bleed doing in the most romantic scene at the end? It really put me off. Mr Elton was suitably oily. Not sure about Mrs Elton's acting. Harriet was good. I'm re reading the book and have finally understood why Emma didn't tell Mr. K. about Elton's proposal. because she knew that she was shown up in her weird match making ways by it and her ego couldn't cope !

Blimey I'd forgotten I'd started this thread!!! The film in question is not wonderful but I've seen worse, M. Flynn is beautiful and can act. Why do they make Em's sister Isabella into a harridan? It's brother of Knightley who's the p in the a in the book. The actress who plays Emm is not my idea of her.

I've seen the film again and read the book again too. Emma's always been my favourite JA.

I found the film funny and entertaining and very good-looking. I've seen all the adaptations and my favourite remains the Andrew Davies version (Beckinsale /Strong).

I liked ATJs mean Emma but didn't take to Harriet (not sure quite why). Frank wasn't good-looking enough and Mrs Bates wasn't talkative enough. I liked Miranda's portrayal though. Bill Nighy was too sprightly for my liking (but also very funny).

Music was good too.

Yes I've seen it.

Also The Outfit-although it was Mark Rylance that sent me to that after seeing Bridge of Spies.

Watched an old episode of Murder in Suburbia & there was Johnny Flynn naked on a bed in one shot!

ppeatfruit · 20/01/2023 13:15

Oh by the way if you're watching a film (and some of the dramas or detective's ) try putting on the subtitles it really clarifies the plot and you actually hear the dialogue (I'm not deaf but some ,most, actors whisper or murmur their lines nowadays). IMO it's either because the directors or the luvvies think it makes it more REAL fgs.

OP posts:
diddl · 20/01/2023 14:37

I agree-I'm a great fan of subtitles!

My hearing isn't good but sometimes if it's loud enough for me then the music gets too booming!

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2023 10:55

Diddl It's funny. mum was deaf in one ear so I used to put the subs on because she had to have the telly on SOOOO loud!!!! She lived in a first floor upstairs flat and you could sometimes hear it by the street door. She complained when I turned it down (but she couldn't argue with volume control numbers on it!). Of course her eyesight wasn't that good either, I had to get her to put her glasses to see the subtitles !! But I like them too, It's amazing how much we miss when they're not on.

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 21/01/2023 10:58

It's the exxing adverts that have the volume up specifically so you can hear them when you're making a cup of tea in the kitchen! (I know this because dh used to work in the biz!).

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 22/01/2023 09:49

diddl I do an easy exercise for my hearing/ears ( it helps a lot ) ! You hold your ears closed (folded over) with your forefingers and very gently tap on the nail with one of your other fingertips, c (whichever you feel most comfortable with!). You count up to 36 and do it 3 times twice a day. I never believed it would work but it does!

ppeatfruit · 22/01/2023 09:51

Oh was "Operation Mincemeat" any good?

It's a war film, about a real event, but a bit embroidered to make it more interesting. Matthew Macfadyan was once in 'Spooks' on TV and they allow him to use the word 'spooks' in the dialogue, which I thought was deliberately done to make us smile, because we're in the know. Half the people in it have been in a Jane Austen adaptation at some time or another. The same story was a film a long time ago, called 'The Man Who Never Was'. It was an operation to try to mislead the enemy. If you google 'Operation Mincemeat' you'll get the film, no doubt, but you should get an explanation of the original operation. It's out on DVD. I don't know if you can get it on all those other streaming things.

@diddl ,..There was Johnny Flynn naked on a bed in one shot

Takes his knickers off at the click of a director's fingers.

Did you see him as wicked Felix in Les Miserables (BBC 2018ish)? Heart-breaking seducer. Absent father of lovely little Cosette.

In general the film was so much good-looking fun that I really liked it but I agree with you about Isabella and John. They were happy together! The film didn't have any need for them to be like they were in this version.

I got to like Mrs. Elton the more I watched it.

ppeatfruit · 28/01/2023 11:39

Thanks Upinaballoon . Yes but that particular Mrs E. was not for me. IMO The best one was Juliet Stevenson she was just snobby enough. Alan Cummings was the best Mr. E. ever
Erm I reckon that a mix of Gwyneth P. and daughter of Richard Beckinsale would be my favourite Emma.
