Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

My God - he's SO good-looking!

Thank you Fuckery - you have made an old woman very happy. Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/01/2019 09:17

Today’s classic, Nurse Edith Cavell, on at 12:00.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/01/2019 12:14

Watching it now fleas - the Boche have just arrived! (I love a man in a Pickelhaube . . . Wink)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/01/2019 12:15

I love the acting style of old films - much closer to theatre-type dramatisation (well, it would be wouldn't it?)-less "real" but I think it adds to the storylines.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/01/2019 19:25

I used to worry about who they got to play the Germans in war films. I thought things might have been a bit uncomfortable on set. (I was an anxious child).

I do think they had the best uniforms.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/01/2019 19:31

Well . . . . the Nazis uniforms were designed by Hugo Boss . . . but obviously that was a generation later.

Meanwhile, the British uniforms were just run up by a small independent tailoring firm in in the East End, over a jellied feel shop, probably. Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/01/2019 19:34

And very smart they were too Schaden but not exactly menacing. Reassuring, I think, like policemen.

kewqueue · 07/01/2019 19:49

@Halsall - thanks! Unfortunately I'm not in the UK though so I won't be able to see it.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 07/01/2019 21:57

jellied feel shop 😆
I had that picture on my wall in my first house, trying to remember who else I had up, think Marlene and Ramon Navarro. And I had one of those mirror pictures of bogart, I believe that in the early 90s I thought it was naff and chazzered it. Wish I still had it.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 07/01/2019 22:22

How glorious! The stunning Ramon Navarro, divine Louise and amazingly-Peggy Ashcroft.

That's a pity kewqueue but worth a try!

Blooming autocorrect!

Determined to shameme publicly on every possible occasion! Angry

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/01/2019 17:38

That black-as-sin photo is amazing!

So dramatic!

Who is Divine Louise?

PrivateParkin · 08/01/2019 18:09

I think it's Louise Brooks? Going by the hair anyway.

Schaden I was v jealous of your Monday afternoon with b&w films! I have already built up a watch list on the planner since going back to work - I need to watch them!

Indiscreet is on Sky btw - one of the films waiting for me...

IT is indeed Louise Brooks. She had an interesting life too. I so wanted hair like that, unfortunately it's blond and fine. and I dont have the cheekbones. If you can find Pandoras Box, probably on you tube, it's wonderful.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/01/2019 20:08

I think that I noticed "Conspiracy of Hearts" is on Talking Pictures at some unearthly hour soon. I put it on to record as we are having building work done and have had to hide the telly for its own safety

It's a lovely film - get ready for a good weep.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/01/2019 21:23

Conspiracy of Hearts is on tomorrow (Thursday 10th Jan) at 14:35.

PrivateParkin · 09/01/2019 21:31

That sounds fab. Have set the box thingy to record. I love nun-based films Grin although I still haven't seen Black Narcissus which was recommended on here a while back.

When I was looking up Conspiracy of Hearts just now, I discovered that Sylvia Syms' daughter is Beatie Edney of Poldark fame. You learn something new every day eh?!

The Titfield Thunderbolt is definitely up there with the classics! Glad you enjoyed it. I’m going to look for it now.😀
