Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

@littlebillie. Audrey Hepburn, my childhood girl crush. I would almost certainly have run away to a convent after seeing the Nun’s Story if there had been one within scootering distance 😁

littlebillie · 09/01/2019 22:59

All that heaven allows

Halsall · 09/01/2019 23:06

OMG, PrivateP, you MUST see Black Narcissus WITHOUT DELAY! Grin

3out · 09/01/2019 23:09

@Myimaginarycathasfleas I always feel a little sad for the farmer’s wife after they raid her home and leave all her buckets etc strewn across the field 😂 It’s a fab film though.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/01/2019 12:40

Titchfield Thunderbolt is ACE!

And Black Narcissus is a MUST - brilliant film!

Halsall · 10/01/2019 13:28

I once went to a special NFT screening of Black Narcissus with a Q & A with the wonderful Kathleen Byron (who plays the bonkers nun Sister Ruth). It was great to see the film on a huge screen in a fantastic restored print, and KB had some fascinating stories about the cast and working with the director, Michael Powell (whose autobiography is very well worth a read, btw).

Amazing that the whole film was shot in the UK and the dizzying Himalayan peaks were all done with mock-ups painted on glass.

Deborah Kerr was so beautiful in it. And David Farrar so good-looking

Halsall · 10/01/2019 13:32

Not quite a Man in Monochrome but needs must....

You are all making me jealous with your Black Narcissus talk!! I have to see it. The big screen experience sounds great Halsall.

Nice pics also Smile

Laughter in paradise (Alistair Sim) is just about to start on LONDON LIVE

Or

Conspiracy of Hearts on TP

Both excellent films that I have seen many times

concretesieve · 10/01/2019 16:27

Lovely thread - thank you.

I also remember the Saturday matinees on TV. I hang my head that I'd forgotten Hobson's Choice - IIRC, it includes a very young Prunella Scales.

So many great films. Have we had St Trinian's yet - love Alistair Sim and Joyce Grenfell. Brief Encounter and The Smallest Show on Earth are top faves, but lots of others, too.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/01/2019 19:07

And Pam Ferris concreteseive!

I'm watching Letter from an Unknown Woman on youtube now - no telly at the moment so have resorted to the tube of you.

southeastdweller · 10/01/2019 19:56

Pam Ferris wasn't in Hobson's Choice. She's only 70!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/01/2019 21:56

Bloody hell - you're right dweller! I've just checked the cast list and it was Brenda de Branzie!

She was the spit of a young Pam Ferris! I feel suitably chastened (must admit I'd wondered . . . but I was so convinced it was her)

AllAboutHallowsEve · 10/01/2019 22:01

For Audrey Hepburn fans, Love in the Afternoon with Gary Cooper is on YouTube.

Great list of films littlebillie. I love, love, love An Affair to Remember (except for Deborah's hairstyle). Gorgeous film.

I'm about to watch Casablanca - or at least a bit of it - to celebrate Paul Henreid's birthday - he was born on 10 Jan 1908. I love his character in Casablanca - all quiet dignity and great singing Grin

I don't think Ilsa did too badly really...

Just thought perhaps I should have included a spoiler alert on that last post?! Grin

Too late Parkin

You've ruined it for me - I've only seen it several hundred times, and had totally forgotten the end (the only film ever where the Hero gets the Policeman). Grin

Davros · 11/01/2019 13:31

Sorry Wrong Number on Film4 now

Drookit · 11/01/2019 19:20

myimaginarycathasfleas I went through the traditional wanting to be a nun phase after seeing The Nun's Story.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 11/01/2019 20:19

I would have made a very poor nun, Drookit.Grin. I’d miss the company.

Unless of course there was Nunsnet.😂

Drookit · 11/01/2019 20:29

Grin nunsnet
Oh I'm not in the least religious. I was similarly affected by seeing Jesus Christ Superstar as a young teen.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 11/01/2019 20:37

What was it about that film, though? We all wanted to be nuns. Real nuns were rather different, if the teachers at my cousin’s convent school were anything to go by.

Drookit · 11/01/2019 20:52

I guess it was Audrey Hepburn and a certain romanticism within the film. Plus catching one at a vulnerable age. Don't think it would affect me in quite the same way now......though Call the Midwife has a certain pull Grin
