Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

I always feel the need for some James Stewart in my life Halsall! Although to be fair, I have already watched IAWL twice this festive season Xmas Grin and every time I watch it I like Harry Bailey less and less!

Hope you get to watch The Bishop's Wife Monica - yes it did get a good write up on here at one time. I'm recording it and will probably watch tomorrow, as I'll be home alone!

Davros · 20/12/2018 13:41

Harry Bailey's a twat, as is Uncle Billy, but they serve a purpose

PrivateEggnog · 20/12/2018 14:49

Xmas Grin tell it like it is, Davros!! Xmas Grin

My sister can't watch IAWL as she hates all the characters, yes even George Xmas Shock

We're watching Very Important Person right now, Subtitles, it's a big favourite in our household Xmas Grin

Mind you, I can never see James Robertson Justice in quite the same way ever since I read a kiss'n'tell article by Molly Parkin in which she explained in great detail how they had conducted a passionate affair and what a superb lover he was Blush

I’d meant to say I’m reeling from the revelations earlier about James Robertson Justice!

I’m currently enjoying a documentary on BBC4 about the history of musicals. I’m determined to watch On The Town over Christmas - I have the dvd somewhere.

BagelGoesWalking · 23/12/2018 20:04

The wonderful Passport to Pimlico - Boxing Day, Talking Pictures at 1:45pm.

MrsChollySawcutt · 23/12/2018 20:28

Watching A Night to Remember (not terribly festive) and have actually managed to get DD16 watching it too!

Davros · 24/12/2018 09:25

Gutted! I went to watch my recording of This Happy Breed from Talkingpics and it's a completely different film - Nurse Edith bloody Cavell! Let me know if THB is on everyone! Xmas Shock

OComeHalsallYeFaithful · 24/12/2018 09:43

Ah no, Davros! I love that film too. Will give a shout-out if I spot it.

The wonderful Rear Window is on C4 at 3.20 this afternoon and there are Celia Johnson opportunities in The Holly and the Ivy is on TP at 21:05 (probably one to record!). I'm rather fond of the latter even though it's on the endearingly creaky side, and we're expected to believe that Ralph Richardson, as a kindly and absentminded old vicar, could possibly be Celia Johnson's father - he was actually only 6 years older than she was Grin
But it has a very young Denholm Elliott in it, and Margaret Leighton as the 'bad' sister (as opposed to 'good', dutiful Celia), who comes home for Christmas when all the family's secrets come out into the open. Suspend disbelief and it's an old-fashioned treat.

bringbacksideburns · 24/12/2018 09:52

Following this thread so I can find it easily.

We always try to watch It's a wonderful Life every Christmas Eve. Love James Stewart
The bit when he wants to pull down the moon for Mary...
