Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

That sounds good Halsall - sky box duly set. I will definitely look out for the dubious father/daughter age gap.

I'm sure This Happy Breed has been on TP a few times recently - so it's bound to crop up again, as they tend to do!

Have a lovely Christmas everyone - hope there's plenty of time for some retro viewing!

PrivateEggnog · 24/12/2018 09:55

Ah bringback Jimmy is my all time favourite. I love most of his films - especially the earlier ones. There's never been another actor like him, IMHO (although same could be said of many others from that era).

PrivateEggnog · 24/12/2018 10:00

I may have spent far too long browsing Pinterest this morning - saw this fab picture of Gene Tierney apparently doing her Christmas shopping. I know I certainly look as cool and unruffled as this when Christmas shopping!! Xmas Grin

I love Gene Tierney, one of my favourites

OComeHalsallYeFaithful · 24/12/2018 11:38

Aaargh, apologies - Rear Window is on C4 at 03:20 tomorrow, so unless you're still up wrapping presents, or wrangling excitable small children at that godsaken time, that'll be another recording job!

However, the original (and imho, the best) Scrooge, with the sublime Alastair Sim, is definitely on C5 at 4.20 this afternoon Xmas Grin

PrivateEggnog · 24/12/2018 12:41

Oh that's my favourite Scrooge as well that and the Muppets. I was reading somewhere (hopefully not repeating something from the thread!) that Brian Desmond Hurst, the director, had to make some kind of public statement about casting Alistair SIM, because there was so much doubt that he could play such a dour part. Well he certainly proved the doubters wrong anyway!

I love Gene Tierney too Davros - a fantastic actor and just sooooo beautiful!

PrivateEggnog · 24/12/2018 12:44

Argh my stupid phone capitalised Sim as in SIM card! Stupid modern nonsense!

bringbacksideburns · 24/12/2018 12:53

Oklahoma is on channel 5 at the moment. Missed a lot. Can't remember having seen it properly before. Just switched it on to see two nan bidding all they own to have dinner with Shirley Jones.

Gloria Grahame is in it - which makes me think about that recent film about her life.

Davros · 24/12/2018 15:02

And she's in Its A Wonderful Life. That recent film about GG was great

MoreCheerfulMonica · 24/12/2018 17:25

The Aged Parent and I have just hopped seamlessly from The King and I to Scrooge. Xmas Grin

MoreCheerfulMonica · 25/12/2018 12:56

Possibly my favourite musical of all time - Guys and Dolls - has just started on BBC2.

SubtitlesOn · 25/12/2018 13:21

Can anybody please point me in direction of It's a Wonderful Life please?

I have RT but can't seem to find it (not sky or Amazon just regular freeview channels please)

Subtitles I can't see it either so you'll have to download it, I guess?

OComeHalsallYeFaithful · 25/12/2018 14:26

Subttles can you get TCM on Freeview? If so, it's on now - started at 2pm.

SubtitlesOn · 25/12/2018 16:50

Thanks guys no we can't get TCM Xmas SadXmas SadXmas Sad

PrivateEggnog · 31/12/2018 09:09

Subtitles I hope you found IAWL in the end. I managed to watch The Bishop's Wife and loved it. I found it a bit melancholy - for some reason I was expecting it to be more light-hearted/full of snappy one-liners - of which there were some, but the overall tone was a bit more serious and thought-provoking. No plaits on Loretta Young either!! I suppose her character was too mature for them! But loved it anyway - I think it was on iPlayer, not sure if it still is.

There's a film on TP tonight The Four Feathers also starring Ralph Richardson - perhaps they're having a Ralph Richardson season?! Anyway it doesn't sound like the kind of thing I'd normally watch (a bit war-based) but it's got really excellent reviews... So I might give it a whirl...

RisingLikeAPhoenix · 31/12/2018 09:57

An Inspector Calls is on TCM at 11.50 on January 3rd - one of my favourite films.

SubtitlesOn · 31/12/2018 12:26

My DH went to buy the DVD of IAWL yesterday so am going to watch this afternoon

Thanks for your help Xmas SmileXmas SmileXmas Smile

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 31/12/2018 18:05

Shamelessley placemaking!

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 31/12/2018 18:07

The Bishop's Wife is a lovely film noggy - I saw it a year ago and based an entire Christmas sermon on it (went down very well, though I say so as shouldn't Grin)

PrivateEggnog · 31/12/2018 18:30

That sounds amazing Schadenfreud! It's such a gentle, thoughtful film. I would have loved to hear your sermon! It's so sad when Loretta (is she called Julia in the film?) is saying she just wants to go out and walk around with David Niven (who wouldn't?) "like we used to" - she isn't asking for anything complicated or expensive etc, just quality time, as we'd say these days. Timeless!!

OComeHalsallYeFaithful · 31/12/2018 18:34

👋👋👋👋👋

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 31/12/2018 18:49

Skweeeeee! Happy new year to Halsall and Schadenfreude! Wondered what everyone did when not "critiqueing" MC. (Oh and everyone else too!)
I watched the Bishops Wife yesterday, blimey it's such a lush film. Cary grant or David Niven-ooft what a choice.
I also annoyed dd by singing all the songs to Oklahoma (there may have been port) very loudly.
Could I suggest an end of year informal poll? Favourite musical. Favourite drama and comedy. Favourite actor and actress?
Mine, Kiss me Kate (or the Band Wagon)
Rear window.
Bringing up Baby
Cary (or Fred Astaire)
Kathryn Hepburn or Judy Holliday.
Happy New year!

OComeHalsallYeFaithful · 31/12/2018 21:15

OhWhat as well! Such joy! Grin I've watched more Talking Pictures this Christmas than anything else, I think.

Favourite actor - no contest, Alastair Sim.
Favourite actress - hmmm. Get back to you on that. Have to ponder a bit.
Favourite film - A Matter of Life and Death (that's a difficult one too, though)
Favourite musical - any Astaire/Rogers film
Favourite comedy - too many to pick one but I'm very fond of The Philadelphia Story
This is too difficult!

PrivateEggnog · 31/12/2018 22:24

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow ooh all good questions, am going to ponder until tomorrow and get back to you.

Here's another for you all: what's been your favourite "new to you" old film of the year? If that makes sense - ie, what's the best old film you've watched for the first time in 2018?
