To think this is a rubbish film (warning: popular 80s movie slating!)

I have a confession that I'd never utter IRL. It has taken a lot of bravery for me to do this and I may well be excommunicated from MN:

I hate The Breakfast Club. Angsty teens get detention. Some snog at the end. That's it. Boring!! First time I saw it i was waiting for 'the good bit'. It never came.

AIBU? What popular film can you not stand?

Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) in Say Anything is the perfect 80s teen movie character. So much more to him than a paedophile horse Wink.

Forrest Gump is just fucking creepy.

I confess to having a massive crush on Richard Gere in Pretty Woman so I watch it while putting aside all judgement re the airbrushing of prostitution.

Not 80s but I used to think Love Actually was a fun festive romantic comedy..until I watched it the 2nd time and realised that almost every blinkin storyline is about a man getting off with a woman 20+ years his junior.
All those seedy 48 year olds slavering over 25 year olds-makes me heave. And that jezebel article is spot on! Can't watch the thing now.

But the point of it is how Emma Thompsons character is the real life wife. She has children, she finds out what Alan Rickman is up to (and yes, he shagged the slapper) just before her kids nativity. She has to keep it together, so she does. The bit where she listens to Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell is the defining moment in the film. There is no romance, no unrequited love, no grand jestures. Just a woman, a wife, in unspeakable pain because her husband is cheating on her, and she has to go down and by Mummy because her kids need her. Its an absolute juxtaposition to the rest of the film.

Its moving, heartbreaking....because its so real.

The shining. Horrific film!!!!

Bogeyface · 02/01/2015 02:08

And yes, I am biased because I was that Mummy, I would like to thank Emma Thompson for playing me so well :( Wink

stillenacht1 · 02/01/2015 02:13

I hate Dirty Dancing too.

Never seen the Breakfast Club.

SorchaN · 02/01/2015 04:05

I neither loved nor hated the Breakfast Club. It was ok but I wouldn't bother watching it again.

I couldn't finish watching Jurassic Park - yawn! (Not 80s, but still...)

I'm really shocked at how many people hate Dirty Dancing, although I wonder if it's just too American-Jewish for a British audience to really get into it.

And I'll always love Star Wars (the first one, of course)!

meglet · 02/01/2015 06:01

Dirty Dancing - I saw it as a teen and was wondering what the fuss was about.

It's a Wonderful Life - no it's not. It's fucking depressing and sinister.

Anchorman - this was on last week. I was expecting to enjoy it but it's just the current generation of male US comedians trying to out-wank each other. I turned it off half-way through. I'm not averse to peurile humour though, Inbetweeners is hilarious. However now at least I know where 'youstayclassysandiego' gets her name from Grin.

GratefulHead · 02/01/2015 06:06

While we're at it, does anyone else think that Edward will bring up Vivienne's past every time they have a row? (Pretty Woman). Hated the film when first out but it has strangely grown on me.

Ferris Bueller was a fantastically funny film and still makes me laugh.

DropYourSword · 02/01/2015 06:18

But, but, she wasn't called Baby. That was just her nickname. Her actual name was Frances.

ithoughtofitfirst · 02/01/2015 06:53

I can't watch love actually ever again.

Or Alan Rickman.

Fuck this thread.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 02/01/2015 07:19

Love Breakfast Club
Despise Dirty Dancing

R4roger · 02/01/2015 09:07

Loved Mad Max films, dont think I would bother any more but there were pretty good at the time.

Loved Heathers, but I was quite young. not under 16, and I think I would like to see it again.
Loved 10 things I hate about you, and in fact, I still do.
and I love Mamma Mia, love Pierce Brosnan, it is just really a comedy and Meryl Streep can sing.

When Patrick Swazye died there were loads of people swooning about Dirty Dancing but it never really did it for me and rewatching it recently I was embarrassed by it. I went to America in the 80s and most of my peers were so excited that they possibly filmed Dirty Dancing where we were staying, again, I was left cold.

Forrest Gump is so boring.
Big, good film, apart from the yucky sexual scenes, omg he is 12 Shock inappropriate.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 02/01/2015 11:17

Ooh Bogeyface, not that you are wrong about the Emma Thompson stuff, but that just makes me hate the film even more ;the men getting their jollys boffing teenage maids and voluptuous Secretaries, while the grown up women have to take all the pain.
Although Laura Liney possibly goes postal later and takes out her whole office.

FollowTheStarship · 02/01/2015 14:02

But, but, she wasn't called Baby. That was just her nickname. Her actual name was Frances.

I know but you still have to endure love scenes between a slightly dubious older bloke and a teenager who everyone actually refers to as Baby. It's stomach-turning!

Labtest7 · 02/01/2015 14:49

I wasnt keen on Breakfast Club but did love the other John Hughes films particularly Pretty In Pink and Ferris Buellers Day Off. My guilty confession is I find Ducky fucking obnoxious on re watching as an adult. Tough must admit I was in love with him as a 14 year old.

Labtest7 · 02/01/2015 15:03

Oh and much as I loved ET, I liked Flight Of The Navigator even more. Loved all the Rocky films too

IsChippyMintonExDirectory · 02/01/2015 15:31

I adored Ferris Bueller as a child and thought he was v cool and dreamy. Watching it as an auld I just think he's an utter twat and feel awful for his teacher, best friend and sister for having to put up with him!

littleleftie · 02/01/2015 15:56

I loved The Holiday and Love ACtually.
