To think this is a rubbish film (warning: popular 80s movie slating!)

I have a confession that I'd never utter IRL. It has taken a lot of bravery for me to do this and I may well be excommunicated from MN:

I hate The Breakfast Club. Angsty teens get detention. Some snog at the end. That's it. Boring!! First time I saw it i was waiting for 'the good bit'. It never came.

AIBU? What popular film can you not stand?

never bothered with ground hog day, a big yawn.
breakfast club, yawn, did not stick around to watch either.
dirty dancing, embarrassingly awful.
Like Pretty Woman
love Lost in Translation
Love American Beauty

dd reckons Ferris Beuller's day off has some hidden meaning, I cannot remember it,

punygod · 31/12/2014 19:05

The Frigging Hobbit films. Embarrassing.

QuinnTwinny · 31/12/2014 19:07

This is beyond offensive for me. The Breakfast Club is awesome!

cruikshank · 31/12/2014 19:10

Vanilla Sky was weak, largely due to Tom Cruise being, well, Tom Cruise, but the Spanish original was awesome.

As for The Breakfast Club, I have pretty much modelled my whole life on the Judd Nelson character. How very dare you!

Dirty Dancing is shit though - Swayze looks like a fucking permanently confused paedophile horse and I'm totally with her father thinking he's a dodgy piece of work.

NoLongerJustAShopGirl · 31/12/2014 19:29

Oh god Groundhog day....... and it's not really sequel Edge of Tomorrow - also known in our house as Full Metal Groundhog day - which has Tom Cruise making a worse job of it than Bill Murray!!!!

imonkey · 31/12/2014 19:30

Have to disagree that all 80s films are bad.... Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Gremlins and Aliens are all classics IMO.
Just remember thinking American Hustle was massively overrated. Breakfast at Tiffany's is so boring. And I wasn't over keen on The Dark Knight. Too long and just okay.

Meow75 · 31/12/2014 19:57

Hate Breakfast Club and Breakfast at Tiffany's but for a seasonal bent - although not an 80's film - It's A Wonderful Life is the biggest pile of overrated shite and I WILL NOT have anyone tell me any different!!!!

FraggleMountain · 31/12/2014 20:03

I think Breakfast Club is alright if a bit formulaic. But I really really really hate Love Actually! The reason for this is described very well here: jezebel.com/i-rewatched-love-actually-and-am-here-to-ruin-it-for-al-1485136388

cruikshank · 31/12/2014 20:10

It's A Wonderful Life is actually quite dark - his ambitions are thwarted, the present-day stuff starts out with him threatening his uncle, shouting at his kids, getting blind drunk and in a fight and then trying to kill himself. Also some quite sharp dialogue. Then you have all the Pottersville stuff which is seedy in the extreme. It's only actually saccharine at the end and boy do you need it by then. Although I suppose in a way it's kind of like valium - takes the edge off the despair and hopelessness of a life half-lived and the crushing of all ambition that you get by sticking around a small town.

Bambambini · 31/12/2014 20:11

Annoys me when folk slate a movie and are so smug never to have seen it.

Did this for years with The Terminator as I thought it was just another shoot em up no brainer Arnie
movie - eventually watched it, was blown away and learned my lesson.

Now, Something About Mary really is an god awful movie, also that other CD movie where they sing the "Penis Song".

vienna1981 · 31/12/2014 20:13

Tequila Sunrise. Top Gun. Ghostbusters. There are probably loads more but these are overrated.

Also, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Back To The Future.

monkeytroubles · 31/12/2014 20:14

I can't stand Anchorman, even though everyone I know seems to find it hilarious.

iklboo · 31/12/2014 20:24

Baby is married to Agent Coulson.

Waltonswatcher · 31/12/2014 20:31

Out of Africa is amazing..
Hate bloody boring big brown pants diary woman - what's it called? Hate loads of films tbh . I hate happy endings . I hate moral lesson telling . Hate violence .
I reckon so many great films turn to crap in the last half hour .

cruikshank · 31/12/2014 20:37

I don't get the appeal of Anchorman either, monkeytroubles. It seems like the kind of film that people make when they're all too busy congratulating themselves on how funny they are rather than thinking about what would actually make people laugh and actually is funny. I died a little inside when I heard there was a sequel.

No! I love Groundhog Day. And Bill Murray a bit.

I've never actually seen The Breakfast Club, but would totally watch it if it was on. I was a wee bit young when it first came out I think.

Some of these films are awful tbh. But they're still good and fun to watch somehow.

I'm looking forward to watching some with the DC when they're a bit older.

I'm the sort of person who will binge-watch a Glee box set though. Blush

corkybolleaux · 31/12/2014 20:57

Anyone mentioned Pulp Fiction yet? Load of fucking bollocks.

DoJo · 31/12/2014 21:51

Can't believe nobody's mentioned 'Big' yet! The sheer creepiness of a child inside an adult's body and then basically tricking a woman into having creepy underage sex - made me feel odd when I first saw it as a child, and hasn't improved with age I discovered a couple of years ago. In fact, anything with Tom Hanks usually disappoints.
I agree with anyone who hates Groundhog Day - didn't like it the first time I saw it, but really started to hate it when I had to watch it several times for part of my degree - watching a film with internal repetition more than once should be illegal and I have never really forgiven Bill Murray for it. He gets a pass for 'Ghostbusters', but can't watch him in anything else.

SparklesForEveryone · 31/12/2014 21:52

Are we just doing 80s films if so, skip this

If not
marley and me
mama Mia
titanic

Tobyjugg · 31/12/2014 22:03

Pretty Woman was godawful (DW loves it tho')

vienna1981 · 31/12/2014 22:03

Just to redress the balance, I like The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi. I love Trading Places. But my favourite film (1980) is Gregory's Girl.

MuddlingMackem · 31/12/2014 23:06

Weekend at Bernie's is one of my favourite 80s films (I have it on DVD and want the kids to be old enough to watch it :) ), and I enjoyed the original, The Trouble With Harry, the only time I've seen it.

I haven't rewatched any of the Brat Pack films in about fifteen years, I did see St Elmo's Fire a second time a good few years ago and still enjoyed it.

NoLongerJustAShopGirl · 31/12/2014 23:09

Withnail and I - tripe....

myleftfoot · 31/12/2014 23:13

Shock! Withnail and I is not, I repeat NOT tripe!

Agree about Dirty Dancing, and Big. Creepy films.
