To think this is a rubbish film (warning: popular 80s movie slating!)

I have a confession that I'd never utter IRL. It has taken a lot of bravery for me to do this and I may well be excommunicated from MN:

I hate The Breakfast Club. Angsty teens get detention. Some snog at the end. That's it. Boring!! First time I saw it i was waiting for 'the good bit'. It never came.

AIBU? What popular film can you not stand?

Mama Mia was dreadful.

I just could not get past the idea of a former James Bond singing ABBA songs.

Naughtypony · 01/01/2015 18:59

I detest Dirty Dancing.
Lost in translation was lost on me & Titanic irritates me no end!Shock

myleftfoot · 01/01/2015 19:46

Same with any other big cult films - if you watched, say, the original Star Wars for the first time now, I bet you'd wonder what the fuss is all about, but if you were a kid at the time, you're probably nostalgic about it in that certain way.

I don't think thats true of the original Star Wars. I didn't see them until fairly recently as an adult (I know, I know) and I thought they were amazing. DD (age 3) saw the films very recently too and is obsessed, as are several of her friends that are the same age. Good storytelling outlives any CGI (are you listening James Cameron).

FollowTheStarship · 01/01/2015 20:11

I never really got Star Wars, as I always really loved Star Trek and Star Wars always seemed nonsensical and schmaltzy in comparison. Too many furry animals.

HolgerDanske · 01/01/2015 20:13

Well yes of course there will always be some that will think Star Wars is awesome even if they didn't first watch it as an adolescent 'back then.' But many will be left cold by it. Most children would like it, I should think.

Anyway it was only an example.

I couldn't stand Mamma Mia either. All that frenetic running about and overblown something-or-other, don't even know what it was supposed to be. Love ABBA so it should have been my ideal film. But I think maybe I'm just a bit younger than the target demographic so maybe that had something to do with it? I dunno. I found it quite insulting, actually.

FollowTheStarship · 01/01/2015 20:16

I liked Mamma Mia but I agree it was utter rubbish. I'd happily watch it again, but only for the songs, scenery and fit men and just because it's always enjoyable watching Meryl Streep. As a story, it's utter guff.

iklboo · 01/01/2015 20:18

Reservoir Dogs. Sorry, but it left me cold.

My friend raved about Mulholland Drive but I thought it was a sack of cack.

FollowTheStarship · 01/01/2015 20:19

I enjoyed Mulholland drive but did have to ask DP about 150 questions afterwards to work out what had happened and who was who!

nannyj · 01/01/2015 20:20

It's not one of the better 80s film I agree.

Bambambini · 01/01/2015 20:31

A lot of basically rubbish movies can be very cringingly entertaining though.

And Zulu is a brilliant movie!

hamptoncourt · 01/01/2015 20:38

Dirty Dancing is shite. Another one heaving at "Baby"

So is Pretty Woman.

Grease is a classic though Grin

mixedpeel · 01/01/2015 20:47

Loved loved loved The Breakfast Club, but even before this thread I'd privately acknowledged to myself that I might be best not revisiting the glory, just in case scales fall from eyes etc.

As a direct result of watching this film, I got Simple Minds Live in the City of Light on cassette tape. The intro to Don't You Forget About Me still does things to me Blush

Always hated Dirty Dancing, though. Brilliant description of the Swayze character upthread!

museumum · 01/01/2015 20:51

Breakfast club, ferris beuller, heathers, pump up the volume and even dirty dancing ONLY work if you first see them before the age of sixteen.
That's the rule.

Bogeyface · 01/01/2015 20:59

Word to the wise.....

Never tell your husband that Pulp Fiction is shit (which it is!) when his hero is Quentin Tarantino ever since the evening at a film festival where they had a drink together at the bar! I should add this was after H shouted "OI! Theres a fucking queue you know" to said director :o

Bogeyface · 01/01/2015 21:02

True

I remember the scene in TBC where they are all sobbing and talking about how their parents are selfish and dont understand them etc etc. I really related to it. When I saw it recently I was really annoyed by it! Stop being so fucking self centered!

raltheraffe · 01/01/2015 21:03

4 weddings and a funeral
titanic

littleleftie · 01/01/2015 21:18

Dirty Dancing is utter drivel.

Pulp Fiction is fabulous.

Titanic! "Jack, Jack" "Rose" "Jack" "Rose" "Jack" Rose, Rose" "Rose" "Jack"

I think that covers it.

IsChippyMintonExDirectory · 01/01/2015 21:21

I used to think titanic was the most romantic film ever. I was borderline obsessed!
Now when I watch it I just think Jack is a patronising predatory creep and Rose is a spoilt whiny bitch

I fucking hate Forrest Gump! It gave me the rage every time somebody laughed in the theatre.

youllshootyoureyeout · 01/01/2015 21:29

All rom com's were and are shit. However, I did like The Breakfast Club, wouldn't watch it now though.

HolgerDanske · 01/01/2015 21:41

I've never been able to sit through titanic.

I have two films that I watch and enjoy even though I really want to hate them:

Love Actually (But only at Christmas)

The Holiday

IfNotNowThenWhen · 01/01/2015 21:49

The breakfast club is pretty bad.
Pretty in pink however is almost perfect , except that molly ringwald should have a) shagged the deliciously pervy James spader before telling him he had a small willy and making him cry, and b) she should have ended up with Ducky, not that boy who always looked like he needed to blow his nose.
Say anything is lovely because it contains Jon Cusak
Groundhog Day is a marvellous film, and very funny.
Withnail is amazing, not least because it has no pointless, just there for set dressing, female characters ( plus a very sharp script.)
Not 80s but I used to think Love Actually was a fun festive romantic comedy..until I watched it the 2nd time and realised that almost every blinkin storyline is about a man getting off with a woman 20+ years his junior.
All those seedy 48 year olds slavering over 25 year olds-makes me heave. And that jezebel article is spot on! Can't watch the thing now.

Dowser · 01/01/2015 23:20

I think we must have watched different versions of ZULU bam bambino. I'm on about the Michael Caine / Stanley baker one where the acting was just wooden.

The acting of the Zulus was just dire.. They seemed to be making a pathetic whining noise when they were attacking. I was thinking " get angry, scare the pants off them'. My grandsons make more noise playing snakes and ladders.

Just dreadful.

LeonardWentToTheOffice · 01/01/2015 23:56

Eh? What? Were you never 16?

IsChippyMintonExDirectory · 02/01/2015 00:27

The Jezebel summary of Love Actually is spot on! Thank you for sharing!
