Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this, and any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

I'm here. Thanks for the new thread Glad.

I'll fill up the hot chocolate bowser for anyone who wants one - and Rum, if you find the bottle of Baileys while you are organising the spirits, would you send it down this way, please?

Definitely up for a hot chocolate. It's damp here this evening though it's not actually raining. I have seen several distant deluges over the past 24 hours, but none of them has deluged on us.

We've had amazing swirling layers of differently-coloured ragged-edged clouds, and thunder and lightning, and those quick brisk breezes that usually presage a downpour, but sod all actual rain - so everything rapidly returns to dust.

I walked B&B down the (dusty) hill yesterday morning. The track gives a good view down the length of a rectangular field. Something started moving across it at a distance, maybe 200m off, and I thought, that's either a bird flying very low... or a muntjac... no, it's a hare. Then two more got moving, one behind the other, away down the long edge of the field, soon joined by two more. They must have either seen or winded us. I can only assume that they were so flighty, compared to the population down in Hare Valley, because the field is edged by a footpath and a lot of dogs will go after hares like absolute lunatics. The Hare Valley ones don't see any dogs other than a border collie who sometimes runs around a fairly well-fenced adjoining paddock, and B&B who behave themselves.

I've got a buzzard feather to show you all, but I've left it in the car...

Magpiecomplex · 20/08/2026 19:43

The sky seems to be leaking here. What am I supposed to do?

Magpiecomplex · 20/08/2026 19:44

Oh, don't worry, it's stopped again.

Figured it out! The thread has been created under Feminism: Chat, which I never look at. My normal go to is the Sex and Gender forum only.

I expect it’s a diversionary strategy to hinder Fennella from tracking the gerbils.

AsWithGlad · 20/08/2026 20:25

Apologies, the last thread was the first one I’d ever started on MN, and this one is in the same place.

Probably just being generous and kind, nobody mentioned that one was in the wrong bit of Feminism.

Since we have a convent on site it might be appropriate for me to write

Ooh look, Rockall!

DauntlessDamson · 20/08/2026 20:36

I've just caught up with Gosie's adventures by reading them straight from Substack, rather than trawling through all the 17 pages I had missed on the last thread! 😦What a brilliant idea it was to collate them all on Substack, Myrtle.

I'm catching up with the rest of the thread gradually.

'By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes' - and I think it's Fenella!

RumNotRun · 20/08/2026 21:03

@DauntlessDamson plain Baileys or one of the flavoured ones? There's quite a selection here but someone, definitely not me, appears to have finished off the tiramisu flavoured Lidl version.

I haven't tried the tiramisu version Rum, it sounds lovely but the plain Baileys is fine. I usually have my hot chocolate laced with Tia Maria, but I thought I'd have a change😁

It's a bit up and down if I'm honest, but thank you for asking. But the fishing is good, and the views are marvellous.

No right or wrong, Glad! It could easily have been my glitchy phone, and I quite like the subterfuge (what if Fenella has her spies in the Bluestocking?) - we'll have to keep our plans on the downlow...

(Myrtle, she doesn't, does she?)

I'd watch out for Gobbolina.
But OTOH, she's firmly under Gillian's thumb and being being bribed with hot chocolate.

Bribery with hot chocolate is a great idea. Well done Gillian.

RumNotRun · 20/08/2026 21:39

I tried another go at the goblin book. Gobbolina went back to the goblin home and all of THOSE goblins were male or female. Maybe the author realised having them (pl) all as they/them (singular) would be far too confusing, which made Gobbolina's pronouns even more annoying. The book is now deleted and instead I have started The Secret Barrister.

I have to thank MN’s truncating of quoted posts.

Next episode up as soon as I've caught up with this thread. Thank you, @AsWithGlad for the thread. I've been juggling

  • writing new chapters (because otherwise you would have nothing tomorrow or the next day),
  • a meeting about the crisis on my committee, which I forgot about until my calendar alarm told me 10 minutes before,
  • writing just the first paragraph of a cover letter for a job application due tomorrow, which was really fucking difficult, but mostly resolved now, don't worry, the rest is nearly done
  • writing my five minutes of remarks for tonight's event
  • preparing for the event tonight, make-up, jewellry, etc
  • eating some food, which ended up being a few mouthfuls before I had to leave
  • driving there, which took ages because I'd forgotten it would be rush-hour
  • discovering they'd missed me of the agenda and insisting on being put back on because the organisation I was representing was paying for it
  • having to do an unexpected last minute filmed interview during the event
  • driving back when my SIL messaged me in great detail about how badly my nephew had done in his GCSEs (7, 8, 9s and a 6 in Further Maths that he taught himself) and I couldn't reply because my fancy car decided it wouldn't let me any more, despite letting me before, so I had to pull over just to reply I'm driving and will text when I get in,
  • eating the dinner I should have eaten before I left
  • texting my SIL about her son
  • talking to the Walrus about the cover letter paragraph and him resolving it very quickly
  • ordering more loo roll because we're about to run out (I have a recommendation link for £5 off for Who Gives A Crap, if you PM me)
  • reading tomorrow's draft chapter to the Walrus, (who thinks it's very funny) and now
  • posting Gosie's episode.

I think you will agree, it was a lot.

And thank you for anyone who received the email with today's chapter in last night because I pressed the wrong button and published it early, for not spoiling it.

I'll get on and post it now.

Any of those sounds fine to me.

I find that when I've had a few, my linguistic ability and accordion playing both improve...Either it's because the Dutch courage* helps or because it dulls my perception of how bad I actually am.

As am I. It was hidden almost immediately I posted it.

I wrote a long list of my exhausting day. It was mildly amusing and I thought you might enjoy it and it was worthwhile ranting about everything.

I have reported my next post and hopefully they will explain why.

Gosie incoming. Sorry for the wait, and thanks to anyone who received the email I sent accidentally yesterday with this episode for not spoiling it for anyone else.

25. Friday

In which the monotony continues...

By Wednesday the gerbils had stopped arriving early, which Halcyon acknowledged by no longer commenting on the time.

The week arranged itself. Graphic was given a tray of green glass on Tuesday, sorted it palest to deepest by the middle of the morning, and was told to do it again by warmth, which took until four. Wednesday was red, which was worse, because red glass is difficult to classify in flat light and has to be caught near the window. Thursday was yellow, twice, and by then she was checking most placements once instead of twice, and Fenella, passing the bench, adjusted nothing. Friday was purple in the morning, twice and then orange in the afternoon, also twice, because there were fewer pieces. Graphic still only needed to check them once.

Gimbal cleaned in the mornings. The glass continued not to need it. She had settled into a rate of about 30 pieces an hour and had stopped reporting the numbers at lunch because Griffin had asked her to.

In the afternoons she swept. The floors continued not to need that either, but the broom had been pointed out on the first day with emphasis, and Gimbal was not the sort of gerbil to ignore emphasis. She swept the workshop, the break room and the front step, in that order, every afternoon, and by Thursday she knew the floor of the workshop the way Griffin knew the map of the Bluestocking, including the flagstone by the kiln that rocked, and the corner where the light from the north windows gave out entirely.

Sweeping is a licence to observe. The broom goes everywhere, at ankle height, at its own pace, and on Thursday afternoon its own pace took Gimbal along the far end of the workshop, past Fenella’s bench, where a panel lay almost whole, old lead gone grey-black, except for two strips along the left and bottom edges, cut free and folded back, two sections of glass removed from the panel and propped loose against a block.

Gimbal looked at it. A woman stood in glass the colour of deep water, and from her raised hand hung a ring of keys, three of them, each of them different, and at her belt was a purse, painted heavy with its contents. She had an expression Gimbal could not put a name to.

Fenella did not look up. Gimbal swept on to the end of the room, brushed out the corner where the light gave out, and took the broom back to its place.

Griffin’s week was the spreadsheet, which had become hers the more she watched it. Parcels came in, some with barcodes and some without, Halcyon signed for all of them, and the tabs were filled.

On Wednesday, working through the kiln bookings tab to log a firing, Griffin found there was nowhere to log it. The tab was full. Every slot, every day, for the next three weeks, and then nothing, as though the calendar fell off a cliff.

“There’s no room in the kiln tab,” she said.

“There’s room Thursday week,” said Halcyon, without looking. “No. Friday week.”

“What’s it all for?”

“Firing and cooling,” said Halcyon. “A firing’s quick. It’s the cooling that takes the time. You can’t hurry cooling or the glass cracks. The kiln is booked to fire, and then booked to cool, and then it’s booked to fire again the moment it’s cold.” She said this the way she said everything, as a fact about logistics, and then she added, “I’ve never known the kiln to be used back-to-back like that. Not in four years. There’s usually a gap.”

Then she stopped. She looked down the workshop, to where Fenella was bent over the far bench, and she straightened a parcel in front of her that did not need straightening.

“Stock to check,” she said, and left to check it.

Griffin logged the firing for Friday week and moved on to the paint tab.

At 4.45pm on Friday afternoon, Halcyon set three small, labelled envelopes on the end of the bench and entered each one in the spreadsheet before handing it over: Graphic, Gimbal, Griffin, twenty sunflower seeds apiece, counted, weighed, and Halcyon’s own name typed at the bottom of the form to show she had checked. The gerbils had to sign for their envelopes.

“That’s the week,” said Halcyon. “Nine o’clock Monday.”

Nobody said anything on the journey home.

Gasket had the mugs down in front of them before the coats were off. Gimbal put her envelope on the bar next to her tea and did not open it.

“How has the week been?” said Girdle.

“I sorted blue, green, red, yellow, purple and orange glass,” said Graphic. “Twice each.”

“I watched a spreadsheet,” said Griffin, some time after that. “The kiln’s booked solid for three weeks. Firing, then cooling, then immediately back in use. Halcyon says you can’t hurry the cooling or the glass cracks, and she’s never known it be fired continually like that. There’s usually a gap.”

@hedgehogforshort turned her mug a quarter turn on the bar, which those who knew her recognised as the sound of her coming to a conclusion. “Somebody has calculated the shortest amount of time a kiln can be cycled without cracking the glass, and built a schedule around it,” said Hedgehog. “Three weeks is probably the quickest the kiln can fire whatever it is they need firing. They want it finished as soon as it’s physically possible.”

“I cleaned glass and swept,” said Gimbal. “The floor by the kiln has a stone that rocks.” A moment later she added, “There’s a window on Fenella’s bench. A lady holding keys, three of them, all different, and a heavy purse on her belt. Blue behind her, like deep water.”

Gosie put her drink down.

“Keys and a purse,” she said. “That’s what’s in the photograph on Gemma Glasswing’s easel. The one for Winchester Cathedral.”

“Then it must be the same window,” said Hedgehog. “Gemma is making the copy in her workshop, and the original is being restored by Fenella in hers. The two panels are being restored and copied at exactly the same time.”
