Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this, and any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

@Boiledbeetle Missed you, mate.

I've been stood in an empty field for days wondering where the fuck the pub went!

I'll be taking @AsWithGlad out back for a quick word when I find her!

MarieDeGournay · 25/08/2026 20:17

If you've got 5 mins to spare.. live, a cappella..

Only someone steeped in traditional music could have written that, she wasn't imitating the folk tradition, she was living it and continuing it.

WearyAuldWumman · 25/08/2026 20:20

Oh, I'm sorry about the fall @NotAtMyAge .

Turned out that the teacher didn't know to expect me - Fife Council's usual communication skills.

I did have my lesson and the teacher was lovely. He looks about 14. I have homework.

It turns out that he was taught by the young man who took the group sessions that I took 20 yrs ago. (I thought that it was more recent. Apparently not!)

I paid for my block of lessons upfront. I was told that I'd get a pensioner discount...but the form specifies that you have to be at least 67. I am slightly peeved since I am indeed in receipt of my pension to which I became entitled at the age of 66 and one month. Looks like Fife has jumped the gun over pension ages. I do get the discount for my gym membership.

I was given the option of paying a fiver for a smaller discount, so I did that.

I'm sure they could do justice to anything, but they think she wrote 9 to 5 for them, poor exploited creatures that they are.

I'll have to re-watch the episodes of the Orville where she becomes an inspiration on a new world.

I liked (it all, obviously) this @MyrtleLion

“Swashbuckled took off the other boot and gave an account of the sail back, which took four sentences and included a squall off Portpatrick that anyone else would have made a chapter of.”

I feel so seeeeen!! 🤣❤️

I’m really pleased you liked that! 💙

MarieDeGournay · 25/08/2026 20:27

When I said Little Sparrow was 'a cappella', I may not have been right - being hard of hearing I can only hear her voice but there may be instruments in the background that I can't hear!

Lol. I’ve lost the pub a few times too. It’s like Dr Who’s Tardis, there one minute, cone the next. Only with a decent bar and scampi fries.

Swashbuckled · 25/08/2026 20:38

Strangely, on Sunday night in the secret fishermen’s pub, one of them told us Dolly Parton had just died. I assumed she had and the barman played one of her tracks in memorium.

I don’t know what to make of that now.

What a woman though.

If anyone loses the pub, the only have to go the Gosie Substack and open the latest episode. I always link to the Bluestocking post at the bottom of the post above the image.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 25/08/2026 20:51

Good to know @MyrtleLion especially as I now subscribe to Gosie so get the email update :)

Perhaps one of the ships should be renamed The Dolly.

Is anyone hoping to catch the blood moon on Friday?

Ooh.
If I leave for the gym a bit earlier than usual I might have a chance.

I should have given myself a Bluestocking name, but it's too late now... If I returned with a new name and no Brains and Batshit, no one would know I was.

Speaking of whom... I took tham out this afternoon, for a short walk and a bit of training and a play. When I was playing with Batshit, Brains told me loudly, several times, that it was her go NOW. Her barking disturbed a couple of buzzards who'd been having a nice rest in the tress 100 yards away. One got up, called and flew off. the other one got up, flapped into the wind and gave us what I assume was a dirty look, flew upwards a bit, turned into the wind for another dirty look, and then flew off calling to the other one not to leave it behind.

Also, I think starlings like blackberries. I disturbed a flock of about 50 yesterday, including a lot of juveniles. They're very pretty birds - if they could sing they'd be very popular.

@EdithStourtonyou might enjoy the book “Mozart’s Starling” - I did! They can actually sing, and copy tunes they hear.

It’s also always linked near the end of the previous thread in my experience, usually more than once, as it was in the last thread.

That’s how I find it, but I have learned not everyone does it that way. 😢

I only heard about Dolly this afternoon - how sad! I agree - Little Sparrow is straight from the world of traditional folk music. I loved it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/08/2026 21:24

@MyrtleLion - you are amazing - that was the perfect wake for Dolly.

AsWithGlad · 25/08/2026 21:28

AnonyMumAuDHD · 25/08/2026 18:45

Not seen @boiledbeetle for a few days? Where are ya?

Am still toying with applying to that Jesus College Research fellowship - and Boily’s encouragement. No flipping idea how you do one of those, but I guess I just wing it right? A £33k stipend would be amazing… no idea whether you pay tax on that or whether deductions are made for student loans. It’s a whole new world after 21 years at home!!

My neighbour is a Fellow of Jesus. Do you want me to whisper your name under their window at night so it’s familiar when they look at the applications? They sleep at the back of the house so it might be a bit difficult. Perhaps I should just attach a note to the cat?

I thought for a moment that the Fellows of Jesus were an obscure religious sect. Then I realised what you were talking about!

AsWithGlad · 25/08/2026 17:37

I’d be surprised if I’m not older than you are.

Some thoughtful Bluestocking thread starters remind us to change to our 💙📉names if we have them. Without that I don’t always remember.

My current one suggested itself one December, when several of us may have been using seasonal names, and has stuck.

I hit the big four twenties in April. Any advance on 80? 😉

That would be amazing! LOL. Whisper away.

Other than that I have to write a seriously compelling pitch 😬

Gina Rippon (neuroscientist and feminist and author of The Lost Girls of Autism) felt my project was ‘timely and appropriate’ but couldn’t free up time to chat before October due to book deadlines - she referred me on to a chap at UCL who is away until later this week 😭 but I have emailed him. I am hoping to chat with her anyway, but the deadlines for all these places are Sept. Tbh, a funded/fellowship placement at UCL might be more convenient (the flat, my beloved pooches), but I have no idea whether there is any funding/openings there. I am hoping that my pitch email will blow him away when he returns from holiday to 2000 emails.

That said, we have a very close friend in Kings Lynn who’d put me and doggos up for a few nights a week if I got a spot at Cambridge. I’d make it work. have even started putting together a teaching profile for how I would teach a module in Crime Fiction if asked to run seminars and workshops.

I am a bit over the place, but really think the late diagnosed ND women project AND looking at crime fiction through a feminist or even socio-cultural lens has so much promise in a contemporary uni setting.

Sometimes, after a day in the trenches with my beloved eldest, I feel 180. Does that count?
