Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this, and any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

I’m having a lovely meal out with my sister. The wonderful novelty of being spoilt for choice in a veggie restaurant.

Indeed, Empress, novelty indeed where you’re not just limited to the vegetarian option, which nowadays is often vegan as well.

At least the days of it always being mushroom risotto seem to have gone.

Thanks for the new thread, Glad. The link didn't work but I found it in the usual location.

AngleofRepose · 04/09/2026 20:11

Has anyone booked the tractors for the move? And does anyone know where Carmela and her cronies are? As Kitty is in Norway (sorry Edith!), I can help carry more of the craft stuff, but will probably need help with the heavy stuff (or a strong wheelbarrow).

It doesn't seem to be raining right now, so I'll take the box of paper, stickers, and glitter over, and come back for the sewing stuff.

Thank you, Magpie.

I have reported the post under “Misinformation” 😉 and asked for it to be changed, but I don’t know if TPTB will do that, especially overnight and at the weekend.

Perhaps I should have mentioned in the report that I have just paid my annual subscription for Premier membership?

I found a wheelbarrow, so will load it up with sewing and knitting paraphernalia, and any tiny Bluestockingers who want to hitch a ride (where's Gubbins?) and I'll meet you over there!

ps. I passed a caravan of camels heading to the new place, but no Carmela... has she gone to Norway, too, or has she been assigned to Cathedral Watch??

Anyway, I hope someone booked the tractors... see you over there!

I have never lived in York but have visited. I live somewhere which also has lots of stunning older buildings, but its more modern sculptures are not as delightful as this one. I suspect seeing it was not random, but a result of my hosts choosing a devious route to walk past it on an otherwise direct path into the city centre.

I love that!

So it was the factory in Bishopsthorpe Road that we could smell in the student village in Heslington in the 90’s. From the roasting of the coco beans (that was lovely) and the melting down of the sugar (slightly more sickly sweet). In the cold wintery air, the fumes from the factory would form a thick white fog that would sort of hang over the area like something from that film, The Fog? It was literally that thick so some nights, especially when it was humid from the rain earlier in the day and cold enough. At times it was so think you were almost convinced that you could scoop at the mist with your hand and eat it… and that it would taste of cocoa. I am sure Dahl must have visited and it fed ideas for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Am pretty sure that the Ouse didn’t run brown because it was liquid chocolate though…

Anony, over 20 years ago,* *when DS lived and worked in Oxford, we used to drive down the M40 on our way to visit him.We always knew when we were approaching Banbury by the powerful smell of chocolate from the local chocolate factory. Much nicer than the normal exhaust fumes, I can tell you. 😁

MN has kindly edited the link and it seems to work now.

Thank you for mentioning it, Magpie. I didn’t want to get it wrong again.

I’ve now started three Bluestocking threads, which is enough for this year. The first one was OK, I think.

Glad, your original link worked for me and it's the one I've bookmarked. Thanks so much for the last three threads.

I'm nervous about using agricultural tractors and trailers, particularly as nobody bothered with tarpaulins last time, so I have arranged for a few artics:

I must have taken myself to the dentist quite often when I was at secondary school as I well remember walking on the road past Symbol biscuits, and enjoying the sweet scent of biscuits cooking in the factory. Dentists and sugar don’t really go well.

Just opposite, on the other side of the road and beyond a small field, was an abattoir. I don’t know if that gave out any smell as it would have been disguised by the biscuits.

I haven’t been back since I left for college over 50 years ago, but I expect neither is still there as too close to the town centre.
Ah, isn’t technology wonderful! Google maps has shown me the abbatoir site and the field have been built on, but the factory site says “Fox’s Burton’s Biscuits (FBC) Limited.”

Myrtle, we love the Gosie Chronicles but looking after yourself is so much more important.

I’m glad you’ve got Mr Walrus.

My holiday starts on Sunday so I’ll be writing about my Norwegian adventures next week 😀

I have had an extremely dramatic day, ending with a not unexpected twist, that I warned about and advised against, and is going ahead anyway. Fortunately it has given me the perfect exit I needed that doesn't compromise my integrity. And before I go (probably mid next week) I will write it all down and send it with the receipts, to everyone who matters, and those who deserve to have the truth told about them. Then I'm going to sit down with the largest bucket of popcorn available, and a bigger bucket of wine, and watch it all unfold before I slam the door on my way out.

A dear friend said to me this week, "go where you are wanted". And I read elsewhere, "you just need to take the next step that feels right". Or as Logan Roy said, "you are not serious people". All of these apply.

Two years ago today I faced the worst nightmare of my life, and I survived and I prevailed. Here I am two years later, facing a very similar situation, but this time, I have the benefit of that experience and others. I don't even care if they think I am flouncing, they do not deserve my time, energy or attention.

And I finalised the next chapter, so Gosie will be here soon.

Do we know if Boily has organised removal of her barely secret supply of Tunnocks? If not, I’ll do it. I can be trusted with this as I’m gluten-free and most Tunnocks are not.

What’s that I hear, in The Bluestocking everything is safe to eat?
My cunning plan is foiled! Tunnocks wrapping foil foiled!

Gosh, that sounds rather intrepid - one might almost say dauntless - of you, Myrtle.

In fact, you could make it into a draft plot for one of Gosie's adventures........

I've rounded up the capybaras to drive @JanesLittleGirl 's fleet of lorries. They are just loading up now,

Hello

Very echoey in here tonight, where is everyone?

Are you gluten free though? Really? Even when it comes to Bluestocking Tunnock's that are gluten free, far free, calorie free....?

Greselda, Gladys and Gaynor you know the drill. Do not let the Tunnock's fall into enemy hands.

And avoid the hedgehog even if it means going the long way round
