Did Harris lose because she was a woman?

Apparently even after calling Puerto Rico a floating island of trash, many immigrants still voted for Trump. It's been argued that some sectors of society simply won't vote for a woman.

Even on here, I saw a post asking if a woman would be respected by world leaders.

Whether Harris was 'inspiring' or not is incidental. She lost because 70 million American adults think that Trump is an appropriate person to lead the country. Sure, maybe another Democrat might have eked out a marginal win, but that's not really the point. In any other Western democracy Trump would be unelectable, a joke candidate. What the fuck has happened that 50% of American adults are either completely morally bankrupt, or just incredibly uneducated? That's what needs addressing.

Surprisingly, even women are concerned about the economy.

Politics is not about voting for a woman or a man, it is about voting for the policies and promises that most align with beliefs.

Although it is particularly galling that a female candidate would sell out women for trans rights activists.

It is about voting for a woman or a man though,
Seeing as the USA has never once had a female president.

They keep voting for the male presidents

They are a very backward country in so many respects. The fact that they are voting for Trump says it all.

Salty. The United Kingdom, a country in terminal decline, has no right to call America backwards. America is one of the few actually productive Western countries. What are you doing? Hosing billionaires just to fund the NHS for a couple more weeks? Driving farmers to suicide?

CliantheLang · 06/11/2024 16:00

Any ideas what Trumps policies are???

An end to the globalist project. That means closing our borders to illegals and tariffs on imported goods.

You want to sell something to Americans? Then provide Americans jobs at a wage that will allow them to buy your products. It's not rocket science, ffs.

Until 5 minutes ago, every country understood the concept of governments putting their own citizens first.

Just like everyone also understood that men aren't women and healthy children shouldn't be drugged, mutilated and have their puberty blocked - just to give men like Tim Walz a thrill.

Because there hasn't been a great female candidate... Michelle Obama was more inspirational as First lady than Kamala was as vice president. She'd have made a fine candidate. Hilary wasn't the worst candidate politically.... she was just carrying too much baggage from her husbands term.

Sandygoldenbeaches · 06/11/2024 15:51

It probably did have something to do with her being a woman.

Seeing as the USA has never ever elected a woman as USA president.

Most other western countries have had a female leader at this stage

Edited

they had Kamala as VP, Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Clinton & Madeleine Albright as Secretary of State, Nancy Pelosi - Speaker of the House, few Supreme Court Justices

But trump is not a good male candidate either!
In fact I think it's because he's so bad and obnoxious, is why he gets in.

There are people like him. Bad people want a bad person as a leader.
They are not going to vote for an intelligent sensible person

I think she lost because Biden turned her over, and she simply didn’t connect with the electorate.

Her gender had nothing to do with it.

Yes I said the USA has never once had a female president in its entire history.

Most other western countries have had one at this stage.

So why is the USA so behind on that area?

Meritocratic reasons.

She lost because Americans would rather our country explode than elect a qualified woman. We are an extremely misogynistic and bigoted country.

I’m not sure of the breakdown of what jobs immigrants do, but I do think his promise to deport 20 million of them has to have been attractive to some voters. Jobs open, smaller queues at the hospital, higher social housing availability.

from a quick google: 24 occupations currently have at least 5,000 undocumented workers in the USA, including construction laborers, maids/housekeepers, cooks, home health/personal care aides, janitors, and delivery drivers.
I'm sure unemployed Trump voters will be jumping for joy for the opportunity to do these jobs. Generally jobs fill up with migrant workers if local workers simply aren't willing to do them at the wage the employer is prepared to pay based on the value that the work adds to their enterprise. Frankly, capitalism needs migrant workers in order to work.

Did Harris lose because she was a woman?
SallyWD · 06/11/2024 16:06

I think that's part of it but not the only reason. Many Americans are right wing and deeply conservative and simply agree with most of what Donald Trump says. To us, his views may seem abhorrent but to many Americans they're spot on.
Also from speaking to American friends, the costs of living has increased so much lately and so has the cost of petrol (something Americans seem to be obsessed with). All this was blamed on the Democrats. I've been told many times that this is the number one reason people voted for him.

I think it's very naive to say her gender had nothing to do with it.

Many people predicted a Trump win, simply because Harris is a woman. A lot of commentators were saying that many parts of the USA are deeply Patriarchal.

Got it.

@Choosenandenough
But the trump team vetted the comedian's script and chose to leave that remark in.

I feel sorry for American women.

Oh no I didn’t mean I condone it at all! I agree, I was just saying who it was I should have added more to my reply. X

You could call Hillary qualified. You cannot call Harris qualified. What were her achievements?

How exactly is she qualified? She believes males can enter female private spaces & males can infiltrate female sports. Basically throwing females under a bus to pander to the men folks demands...

PeppedUp · 06/11/2024 16:16

I think it was a contributing factor even if voters didn’t realise that it was influencing their decision.

There was a female voter quoted in The Guardian who said she didn’t vote for Harris because she was too “sweet” and wouldn’t be able to stand up to foreign leaders. I’m a bit shocked at that view based on how subservient Trump appears around Putin.

I think the first female president will be a Republican because they will be able to pull votes from the left. I think female Democrat candidates face an uphill battle pulling votes from the right.

CliantheLang · 06/11/2024 16:19

Frankly, capitalism needs migrant workers in order to work.

Ridiculous take. We should bring in migrants to exploit them? No country needs jobs that won't pay a living wage to their own citizens. We're not China, after all.

Givemethreerings · 06/11/2024 16:22

@PeppedUp I think the first female president will be a Republican because they will be able to pull votes from the left. I think female Democrat candidates face an uphill battle pulling votes from the right.

Interesting and also makes me reflect on the fact that Britains three female prime ministers all come from the right, while the Labour Party has never been led by a woman.

chumpt · 06/11/2024 16:22

that's a lazy and unhelpful conclusion, that she lost due to her gender.

Nobody ever accused Hillary Clinton of being "sweet" and she also lost to Trump. Hate Trump all you want but he's always loved his country - something the Democrats have decided makes Americans deplorable.

CharSiu · 06/11/2024 16:31

@taxguru thanks for making a very succinct point regarding people that are not white. White liberals have a very bad habit of bunging all non white people in to a huge homogenous mass and it’s a mistake. I can say hand on heart when I started dating my Dads first question was is he black ? My Dad was Chinese he would have 100% disowned me if DH had been black, he is white so was passable. My brothers live in the US and are very successful. They vote Republican. One of their daughters has just msg me upset as she is a Democrat. It’s going to be a bit scrappy between them like Brexit was here but overall Asian dutifulness will win out.

Her being a woman will have played some part just as being mixed race as she is half Indian and half Jamaican will have played a part. But it’s not just she is a woman or mixed race is it, it’s multi faceted. Biden and all the shenanigans of having a candidate that was obviously completely cognitively compromised and her not really saying much apart from being anti Trump was unhelpful.
