Rise of the far right

I am watching election news with increasing fear. The deranged Trump conspiracy theorists supporters in the US, overturning Roe Vs Wade, the far right gaining traction in Europe, some of the rhetoric here. Hell, the fact the Rwanda idea was not immediately dismissed as insane.

Then outside the West there’s the threat to women’s lives in Afghanistan, Iran…

How does this end? How does it reverse? Other than a WW2 scenario, how do we secure the safety and freedom of women and girls?

I want to be optimistic, but I’m struggling to see a route to progress. I’m hoping the much more knowledgeable souls of FWR will know.

@1Week As I posted this in FWR, I was particularly thinking in terms of women’s rights when I said I felt from the news coverage there was a rise of the far right. I would include repressive and authoritarian regimes in that, personally.

It does feel that rights we (or at least I) thought we’re secure are being rolled back.

On DDay as well. Very Impressive. We aren't fooled and we know exactly what you are up to. 😀

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/06/2024 00:47

Neither women nor children flourish under the far right. It is the most patriarchal of regimes.

Northernnature · 15/06/2024 01:19

If you think women and children are going to flourish in starmers Britain you're in for a shock.

It’s particularly shameless of you to STILL be posting having still not answered the question.

How will Labour deport anyone ever and where to if they don’t have documentation and won’t share where they are from? Which happens ALL of the time.

They can’t, and they won’t. Which is why you can’t answer.

We are going to be screwed under Labour because they have NO PLAN!!

Norhing.

So how is anyone supposed to vote for a party indifferent to our national security and our future?

At the moment, none of the far right parties have encroached on women's rights. They're a danger to the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and minorities. The EUs new Migration Pact is testament to the move right. It includes the possibility of long term detention in third countries with dismal human rights records. So of course women and children will suffer

Meanwhile Austria's Freedom Party has called for a Remigration Commissioner in order to remigrate millions of migrants across the EU. People who don't have any respect for international human rights law don't tend to believe in equality.

Edited to add Poland's abortion ban is perhaps an indicator in the way things are moving.

The far right 'trad wife' movement in the States is interesting.

You’re right, @cupcaske123 , Poland’s abortion ban was one of the things I was thinking off.

Well Hungary has a dismal record on women's rights. I believe it's one of the lowest on the Gender Equality Index. It also has limited access to abortion.

The approach by countries in the EU to its Directive on non consensual sex makes interesting reading.

Northernnature · 15/06/2024 09:39

I'm sure having undocumented males flooding Europe from countries that treat women like animals does wonders for women's safety and security.

BardsAreAssholes · 15/06/2024 09:39

Wouldn’t you categorise Hungary’s leadership as far right? I would have - but I admit I know only what I pick up from the news so am prepared to hear I am wrong.

Of course. The European Commission has launched legal action against Hungary's new sovereignty law which gives the state unfettered power to interrogate Hungarians and use its intelligence services with no judicial oversight. It also severely restricts freedom of the press.

Northernnature · 15/06/2024 10:12

Orban is very popular in Hungary (alot more than Rishi or keir starmer who tend to get minus ratings) and Hungary near the top of the stability charts in Europe. The EU hate him because he won't allow mass immigration so consequently Hungary is more stable and crime is low with no terrorism. Alot of people would like the same here which is labelled as far right but just how it has been in most of history up to the 2000s before which the country was alot more cohesive and less divided. Go figure.

The government fired the heads of the National Weather Service when fireworks displays were cancelled due to inclement weather. Gosh, I hope we have something similar in the UK.

That sounds like abit of a random "fact" and no idea if it's true, but don't think that would affect peoples quality of life somehow.

Unmitigated power and flagrant breaches of democracy, tend to effect people's quality of life.

That's me, I'm one of them shameless women.🤣🤣🤣 But my correct title is: Feminist.✊️

Spain's Vox party have some disturbing ideas about women's rights. They want to block abortion access, repeal legislation on GBV and shut down the Ministry of Equality. They want to replace the Ministry of Equality with a Family Ministry to promote a higher birth rate and the so called 'traditional family.' They seem to promote the idea of gender essentialism.

Francisco Serrano wrote a book called the 'Gender Dictatorship ' and calls feminism, amongst other things, 'gender jihadism' and 'female chauvinism'. He's said that only 5 per cent of DV reports are true. Although he left Vox in 2020.

They refuse to accept that GBV exists and want to change DV laws to 'intrafamiliar violence' which would exclude stranger rape or murder. They believe that 'violence has no gender or labels' and want to divert government funding on GBV to other things. In 2019 they refused to sign an all party declaration on violence against women.

Northernnature · 15/06/2024 13:25

So what if that's what people want they will vote for it. The problem is when politicians lie to get votes then do something completely different (Tories).

Just had Labour knock on my door. I had been asleep (had to pop back to work late last night) so told them wasn't a good time. Wish I'd been more with it and had a proper chat.

The stats speak for themselves but it hasn't gone well when they've been raised on here - cries of xenophobia. Can't really remember many stats but one was 75% of gang rapes over last five years being perpetrated by recent immigrants from Muslim majority countries. Can't remember which country it was. Maybe France or Germany.

The demographic that had perpetrated was like 1-3% of the population so was an extremely high rate of offending in relation to their presence in society.

People should use the phrase 'far-right' more carefully. BBC coverage of the EU elections was laughable. If I had ten pounds for every time they said 'far-right' (dragging out the a to make it faaaar right) I could retire. The real threat isn't from the 'faaaar right', it's from the far-left. They have much more power and influence. They dominate everything from the BBC and the universities to publishing and the arts. And many of them are breathtakingly intolerant. In fact, I suspect many left-wing activists would ditch democracy if they could. It's pretty much baked into their loony Marxist ideology – you know, the proletariat seize power, establish a temporary dictatorship (temporary!! lol, as if anyone ever voluntarily gives up power), and then, after a bit of unpleasantness, the state "withers away" and we have utopia.

Who are these far-right thugs we keep hearing about? I've never met any. And I've never witnessed a far-right march or demonstration. However, I have experienced bullying and aggression from 'woke' left-wingers. For crying out loud, just wander into the history section of Waterstones. Glance over the history books and within seconds you'll find one attacking British history and identity. The liberal-left have an overwhelming influence. The 'long march through the institutions' is pretty much complete.

Right-wing parties did well in the EU elections, true, but the chances of a genuine far-right party taking power are zero. In reality, most people who voted for them just want immigration brought under control. That hardly makes you faaaar-right. Wanting illegal immigrants deported does not make you far-right either. It makes you sensible and rational. The clue is in the word illegal. If I moved to the U.S., for example, and overstayed my Visa, I would expect to be deported, just as I would expect to be arrested if I broke into someone's house. There is no hunger for genuine far-right policies. Even the people who voted for these parties do not want capital punishment, or the persecution of gay people, or war with their neighbours, or idiots in shiny black uniforms strutting around. Like I said, they just want a sensible approach to mass immigration.

You mean like Suella Braverman, Pritti Patel, Georgia Meloni, Marine Le Pen, Alice Weidel, Margorie Taylor Green, Pia Kjærsgaard, etc.?

Oh and don't forget Nicola "feminist to her finger tips" raving lefty Sturgeon. She did so much for women.
