Why was this woman arrested like this!?! Her poor child!

According to other Tweeters, she had paid her bus fare BTW.

Police in the wrong. Arrest for possible fare evasion? Obscene. What if she couldn’t afford the bus? Arrest all poor people eh? Is we back in Victorian times?

Would that argument still be the same for shoplifters, people who refuse to pay taxi fares, people who refuse to pay for restaurant meals?

If they say "we just can't afford it" the police should let them off?

Word would get around and everyone would do it.

Yes it would be unreasonable to arrest someone for shoplifting who hadn’t actually shoplifted

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 09:56

I thought she didn't pay the fare at the time?

LadyWithLapdog · 10/08/2023 11:06

@Felix125 if you followed the thread you’d see she had paid. I think even the very first reporting in the papers was that she had paid. I don’t know why you’re still confused.

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 11:20

Or she didn't show the ticket to show that she had paid and walked off.

So if a person walks out of a shop with a load of items and refuses to show their receipt, its believed she hasn't paid for any of them and continues to walk off. Is their nothing the shop can do to check? Or do they just allow her to walk off?

And if it turns out that she just couldn't afford to pay - do we just let her go?

No, she had paid.

You can’t buy a bus or train ticket retrospectively

How is your last line in any way comparable to the story in the OP?

I was once asked a few years ago at a Sainsburys in a town I was visiting to show my receipt - they were checking receipts at the exit. I had paid via self service and didn’t get one as I didn’t need it, I’d only bought train snacks and a magazine. They asked me to what to check CCTV. I said no, I have a train to catch and left. I would have been very surprised if I’d been manhandled and arrested - the again in a white woman so it probably wouldn’t have happened.

So why didn't she just show her ticket and not walk off when asked to do so.
They may have believed she had walked on to the bus without buying one.

Felix is always confused.

Because you don’t get tickets on London buses and you haven’t for a long time.

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 14:58

So how do you show you have paid - and what was the inspector asking for?

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 14:58

People are being pedantic. You don't get a paper ticket but they can check that you have paid when you produce your bank card or Oyster card. She didn't do that.

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 15:03

So they may have had a suspicion she hasn't paid and was asked to stop to prove she had. But she refused to stop and walked off.

They just crouch under bridges in the feminism forum

LadyWithLapdog · 10/08/2023 16:41

Yeah, sometimes I can spot them and I’m getting better at not being drawn in and wasting my time.

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 17:06

LadyWithLapdog
So I take it you can't answer the question then?
I'm not time wasting. I am asking a question about a subject on a public forum.

So why didn't she just show her ticket and not walk off when asked to do so?

Can you not see why the inspector would be suspicious that she hasn't paid?

And what's the point of having an inspector if they are not allowed to challenge anyone who they believe haven't paid?

LadyWithLapdog · 10/08/2023 17:08

@Felix125 answers on previous 9 pages. Waste your own time 😂

No - the question was asked a number of times - but was never answered.

@Felix125 because we haven’t heard from the mother or further details from police the answer is simply - we don’t know. We don’t know why she didn’t do whatever one has to do to prove they’ve paid for a ticket. But in my eyes it doesn’t matter - she DID pay and it’s massively OTT to have 4 officers manhandle a mother in front of her small child simply because they think she didn’t pay for a ticket.

Im guessing she stepped off the bus because that was her stop.

Felix125 · 11/08/2023 09:35

But at the time, the inspector had a belief that she hadn't paid.

So what - does that justify the heavy handed nature of the police over a £1.75 fare?

I find it terrifying that people agree that if there’s even a tiny suspicion of a tiny little offence maybe having occurred, that police can be as aggressive as they like. There’s a thread at the moment about an autistic child who said in her own home that she thought a police officer might be a lesbian and they ah e 9 officers aggressively trying to arrest her for a hate crime whilst she’s having a meltdown and self harming. People think this is OK. Wake the fuck up!

Felix is supposedly a policeman. He's been all over the thread about the women possibly drugged and sexually assaulted in Manchester.
