Why was this woman arrested like this!?! Her poor child!

According to other Tweeters, she had paid her bus fare BTW.

I don't think any of you realise how TFL works in London. You don't get a ticket to show anyone. You swipe your bank card or Oyster card against a card reader. You don't have anything to show. You just have to swipe your card again when some revenue person asks you to. It's very hard to see what is going on as they dont even take the money out of your account immediatley.

PerfectYear321 · 24/07/2023 23:01

Very bizarre all round .

The police don't investigate serious crimes these days so why are they getting involved in potential non-payment of a ticket, which is a civil matter? I despair.

I don’t don’t that she was in the right here.
But she was clearly resisting arrest and causing more upset to her child.
To calm the situation, she should have remained calm herself and not allowed it to escalate to this point.

I think it's more nuanced than that once the lady's race and sex is brought into it. Many black people do not have confidence that they will be treated fairly and safely by police especially following Chris Kaba's death. Many women feel the same especially following Sarah Everard's death.

Do you genuinely believe that the only explanation for her behaviour is so she could disregard her child's feelings and get her 15 mins of fame discussing her racist treatment by the met? Can you honestly not think of any other valid explanations?

Was that why Jean Charles de Menezes ran too? Just so he could play the racist card later?

Eyeroll85 · 24/07/2023 23:08

This!
Arresting her over a bus ticket seems excessive, so maybe we are not getting the full story, particularly as the video does not show the initial incident or build up to the arrest.
Why on Earth would you put your child through this over a bus ticket?
Seems ridiculous to me!

ohfook · 24/07/2023 23:08

@OddsocksinmyDocs no it doesn't but it may explain why she was scared and acted in a way which doesn't seem rational.

chutneysauce · 24/07/2023 23:11

Well I'm not going to judge her until I've heard her side should she choose to do so. We've seen the video, heard what the police have said (who I don't particularly trust) but not yet from her. Like I said before, I think there's definitely more to this story then we are being told.

londonmummy1966 · 24/07/2023 22:54

Unless the inspector had made a bee line for her on the bus and made her feel uncomfortable.

THere's a lot of aggression from one ethnic group in Croydon to black people and I wouldn't mind betting that this is the case here.

Sorry to hear that. She did seem genuinely upset. I’m not sure if we will ever know what really happened but I don’t think the police come out of it looking good.

Simonjt · 24/07/2023 23:13

I just knew this would be a non-white woman who was targetted, you don’t receive a ticket on tfl, you just tap and pay like you do on the tube. To prove you pay you have to open your banking app (if you have one) and give them access to your online banking, the met police are well known for removing phones and refusing to give them back, rather than allowing the owner to keep hold of them while the officer looks at the screen. In London black people are arrested for having vaseline in their car. I would have done exactly as she did and walked away, until the police start treating us in the same way they treat white people there is no way I would ever comply with others from one of them.

Eyeroll85 · 24/07/2023 23:32

How do they check if you have paid for a ticket if you have used your phone/card to tap in?
Surely they have a way of knowing you have paid without you having to open your banking app.
What if you do not have a banking app on your phone?
What if you have no data on your phone to access your app?
Also the payment usually doesn’t show up on your online banking until the next day.
So I am not sure that the ticket inspector would have asked to see a banking app.
And as for the speculation that she was made a beeline for, unless she was the only person asked - rather than just the first person asked, I don’t see the issue.
This is coming from a mixed race lady - mother from Barbados and father an Irish traveler.
It it frustrating to see people use race as an excuse to act like stubborn idiots when something so simple, could have prevented the whole situation.
As I said already though, we do not know the whole story, so we have no idea what led to this situation, so I will refrain from hiding the situation too harshly on either side until we know more.
I just hope that the little boy is ok.

Eyeroll they can trace it somehow. The same happened to me on a tram, I was asked to tap my card on the reader. My friend got a fine because it detected she hadn't tapped her card. I'd tapped mine so was OK.

Annaishere · 24/07/2023 23:40

I think this happens when you don’t cooperate with police

SpaceRaiders · 24/07/2023 23:47

How this woman was treated is an everyday occurrence for minorities which just happened to be caught on camera. You become traumatised from repeated actions from the police. Who knows if this hadn’t happened to her before. The compound effect of repeated incidents will cause people to behave in highly unexpected ways. And now the cycle repeats because that young child will grow up fearing police due to how his mother was treated.

NotBotheredAnymore · 24/07/2023 23:49

The police only got involved because she walked away from the ticket inspector though.

DojaPhat · 24/07/2023 23:50

That doesn't give people the right to be abusive to the police though...

True, alas, I've found my people! Why can't it be like the old days when the police could harass Black people with impunity. Those were the days, eh girls!

flashbac · 24/07/2023 23:53

Very racist undertones on this thread.

MaydinEssex · 24/07/2023 23:54

The lady should have just shown her ticket, it wouldn't have escalated then.

BombasticSideEye · 24/07/2023 23:54

Jesus, people don't even pretend to hide their racism on this site anymore do they...

This particular board on the forum is a cesspit, this is light in comparison to their usual.

BombasticSideEye · 25/07/2023 00:01

@DojaPhat indeed. As soon as I clicked on the thread and saw that it was here instead of BMN I could predict the responses. "If only she had complied..." 🙄

You don't show your banking app on the phone to police Confused

You tap the card you have used on their reader and it shows you have paid

There is NO personal information or phone involved

That does not exclude she was targeted or they were rude or she was the only one asked - we have no idea if her 'crime' is being from the global majority race 🤷‍♀️ - what we do know is that it looks fucking excessive for £1.75
