Dd uncomfortable with trans child using bathroom

sunnynightsarethebest · 15/07/2023 07:45

My dd, year 6, had said today there is a boy in her school (they are in year 4) who identifies as a girl. The child gets to use the female toilets, my dd and a few girls in her class are uncomfortable with this as they are going through puberty and don't want to share a bathroom with the child. I don't no what to do about the situation as dd doesn't want to use the bathroom at school incase the child is in there, but I get the child identifies as a girl so needs to. But I feel my daughter and others in her class should be able to use a bathroom and not be concerned by whose in there. What would people do in this situation?

Alfie, you can look up Ofsted's own report on the figures pertaining to rape and sexual assault in schools in England and the "everyone's invited" site. The government's response to the report is easily found via google. No way am I going to go trawling for personal information to put on here.

Link? If a child was raped in a primary school then it would be headline news

Not true at all. My DN was raped at school. No reporting.

The law says there must be sex segregated toilets.

Also this is a clear case of sex discrimination, they now have a boys toilet and a unisex toilet. If they insist they need a unisex toilet then why didn't they make the boys toilet unisex?

Given that girls are going through puberty and have more changes to their body the sensible option would be to make the boys unisex.

Tabbycat90 · 16/07/2023 10:22

At that age I think there should be male, female and gender neutral. Boys deserve privacy too.

Yeah and those schools who have girls transitioning to boys have girls toilets and unisex toilets. How is that any better?

Boys go through puberty as well, mine wouldn't want to be sharing with girls any more than the girls want to share with boys

I doubt your boys are dealing with periods. And at the moment this school only has one child transitioning who happens to be MtF.

AliceInAWoahfulLand · 17/07/2023 06:26

just joining this thread to say, I started my periods at around 13 years old, I went to an all girls school.

For the first year of getting to grips with my periods, I absolutely hated using the toilets at school, I was so self conscious and embarrassed, they noise of unwrapping stuff, the bin lid closing, the coming out of the stall to wash my hands.

Unfortunately with hormones raging this ultra self consciousness and embarrassment about periods is common for lots of girls.

had there been a risk of a boy being present in the toilets I probably would have been a school refuser on the days I had I had my period.

This.is.the.issue

Girls need and deserve dignity and privacy.

Express0 · 17/07/2023 07:06

I’m in my 30s and still get conscious of the ripping noise. Ridiculous really as I’m a fully grown woman and been having periods since I was 11.

AliceInAWoahfulLand · 17/07/2023 07:27

Express0
I occasionally still get that feeling too. not everytime but still there.

I definitely still hate it if it's a heavy period and I have blood on my hands when I walk out to the sink to wash my them.

porridgecake · 17/07/2023 10:19

@RoyKentFanclub

I am so sorry.
The last time I looked at the stats in detail, which was about a year ago, the average was 1 rape a day in school, in England. A proportion of those involved children aged 10 and under, so primary school age. I haven't looked at other parts of the UK. I don't know if any figures are collected or reported.

FWR has threads that have carefully collated evidence around the incidence of sexual assaults in single sex and mixed sex facilities and it has been shown that the risk is much higher in mixed sex toilets and changing rooms. I can't quote exact figures because I would need to look it up for accuracy.

let him use the disabled toilet.

No, the accessible toilet is for people with disabilities that require it. Only.

Anyone can use a disabled toilet. The law clearly states this
A disabled toilet is a toilet that also has additional space and equipment for people that may need this. That’s all. They are there for everyone.
Only disabled parking spaces are specifically for disabled / blue badge holders.

If that’s the case why do a lot of public disabled toilets have a disabled key (which you need to show proof of disability to get from the council)? I know people do purchase the keys online but disabled toilets are meant to be for those with disabilities. Being trans is not a disability.

Some places do now provide unisex toilets including some high schools, DD’s school were talking about providing them.

This is a primary school, people with female genitalia should use the girls toilets and people with male genitalia should use the boys. Simple.

No one should feel uncomfortable by having the opposite sex in the toilets. They are children FFS.

viques · 19/07/2023 17:01

I still can’t get my head around the implication that it is OK for a whole cohort of girls ( in a two form entry school this is probably about 60 girls in Years 5 and 6, 120 girls if you include Years 3 and 4) are made to feel uncomfortable and pressured to be kind, to accommodate the feelings of a single boy - who I am willing to bet is absolutely known to be a boy by all the children in the school - rather than him use the toilets that the 119 other boys in the cohort use. In my wide experience of boys school toilets there will be both cubicles and urinals in the boys toilets, so the child could use either. Why is this even an issue.

porridgecake · 19/07/2023 17:03

I still cannot get my head around the fact that there are people who think human beings can change sex.
We have been having these discussions for years and every so often I step back and just think this is absolutely insane.

Big article in the DM (I won’t link) about a man having a baby. No,actually it’s a big article about a woman who took testosterone for a few months then stopped taking it and got pregnant using a sperm donor. If anything in the whole wide world proves that you can’t change sex it is women pretending to be men, then going back to being the women they always were and having a baby.

Hi
I was just commenting on the issue of disabled toilets.

There is no law that states only disabled people can use disabled toilets, if some councils are not abiding by this then they are in contravention and discriminating against everyone else.
Especially people with week bladders that can’t wait!, that’s mainly women then!
If your council are doing this I would ask them to point you to the non existent law.

When we calculate number of toilets required, the disabled toilets are included in the overall calculation as unisex.

MavisMcMinty · 19/07/2023 19:22

Yes, I have always considered “disabled toilets” to mean SUITABLE for wheelchairs etc, rather than ONLY for disabled people.

TimeToMoveIt · 19/07/2023 19:27

We are talking about young children still in junior school, I can't believe some posters would stop a child who imo is being let down by all the adults in their life who are buying into this shit in the first places use the disabled toilets at school . Some people are so bloody unhinged by the whole trans thing the can't see that they are talking about really troubled young children here

Boomboom22 · 21/07/2023 19:42

The radar keys is to try and keep them clean and ok to use without needles on the floor and vandalism. If you have such a weak bladder buy one online. But but much to say it is discrimination for councils to at least try and provide dignity for those who require extra space for a wheelchair or to use a floor without needles or piss or semen all over it!
