Pregnant NYC Bike "Karen" was the victim, not the agressor

Trial by social media for a pregnant woman who cried when a man tried to steal the bike she's hired is tried and hung by social media, and put on unpaid leave from her job, with no evidence or investigation:

https://www.bicycling.com/news/a43920956/pregnant-nyc-karen-on-video-trying-to-steal-a-black-mans-citi-bike/

https://news.yahoo.com/receipts-show-hospital-worker-accused-170920174.html

It turns out she had paid for the bike and he has no evidence he paid. But he is not the subject of the internets wrath, no consequences for him.

I hope she takes her employers to court and wins a massive settlement. Surreal levels of misogyny and hatred directed to a pregnant healthcare worker who did nothing wrong at all.

Will this ever be recognised for what it is?

Why the heck would a pregnant woman who had just spent 12 hours on a nursing shift go out and try to nick a bike off a group of guys?

So she wouldn’t just want to get home, kick off her shoes, have a bath and eat her dinner?

PuttingDownRoots · 19/05/2023 14:09

Thats the issue with these viral videos. They can be presented in such a way to get people to agree with your narrative while the full truth gets twisted.

Soubriquet · 19/05/2023 14:14

To me, it reads like an error on the system and both parties were let down badly.

I would be terrified if a group of men surrounded me trying to take something I had paid for, especially if I was pregnant at the time.

The fact that these men who not shown any evidence they rented the bike also, is telling.

@littleripper the boys own recording state they paid for the bike. So until I see proof to the contrary I'll believe them.

The NYC press describe them as youth under the age of 18 aka a child. I do not know these children so if there is a misprint and they clarify (supported by the youths aka children confirming) as such I'll change my description of them. Until then I'll refer to them as children instead of adultifying them to appease your (likely) rascist rhetoric .

Finally I'm a black woman so how does that fit your view of my opinion? I make a point of not allowing white adults bully young black people adultify said young black people.

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 19/05/2023 14:55

If nothing else, the video begins part-way through the altercation. It shows absolutely nothing except for some people shouting at each other.

She's the one sitting on the bike and I doubt she overpowered them. I imagine she got there first, was approached by a group of men who wanted to point out a mistake and she came across as rude/blunt towards them and they got a bit intimidating and a little physical (stretching over her to grab the handles, nudging her off).

My assumption is the same as others - that they both paid for the bike. Why they couldn't have calmly showed each other their booking confirmations then worked out an equitable solution, I don't know.

TrudyProud · 19/05/2023 14:57

@littleripper why don't I believe you? If you knew any black men or boys on a close enough relationship you would appreciate how ridiculous this racist nurse was and wouldn't perpetuate the narrative of "angry black man/boy" at the drop of a perpetrator crying.

Numerous studies have shown that young black boys and girls are consistently mis-aged and presumed to be older than their white counterparts and held to a higher/different standard of behaviour.

Let's be honest if you are willing to admit you jumped to conclusions based on limited evidence as soon as you saw the dynamic of a white woman next to a group of black males you were ready to believe he.
As to asking the males to show their proof have you seen the racist nurses foetus on an ultrasound? Or have you just presumed she's telling the truth?

But saying on camera “that’s my bike I paid for it” is not proof that they did.

maybe they had paid for it and either she got the wrong bike or there was an admin cockpit.

maybe they thought they’d paid for it but hadn’t

maybe they were lying and were trying to steal the bike.

the only thing we apparently know for sure is that she paid for it because she has proof that she did, emails from the hire firm. The man has not yet shown that proof, which makes me think he probably doesn’t have any.

I can imagine she was panicking as they were trying to pull her off the bike and if they’d taken it and not returned it she’d have been liable for the 1k charge. Maybe if they’d all agreed to redock it there would have been a better outcome. But she was worried she was going to get pulled off and they just cycle off.

I certainly don’t think anyone should accuse her of weaponising her tears.

@Walrussy I won't fuck off and if you are unable to put forward your opinion without resorting to profanity that says more about you tbh

Why do you repeatedly question the woman's pregnancy?

She doesn't need to prove she's pregnant, as it isn't the issue. The issue of whether the other man had a booking (or legitimately believed he had) is the very crux of the matter.

TrudyProud · 19/05/2023 15:04

To be clear I am a woman. I am a black woman. Having been on the receiving end of the infantilisation of white women who cry during any kind of discomfort (even when they are the aggressor) i stand by my opinion
@MissLucyEyelesbarrow

Finally, I strongly believe that it's probably because I haven't blindly agreed with you and taken this woman's side is the only reason you'd presume me not to be a woman.

littleripper · 19/05/2023 15:06

@TrudyProud Why are you calling men boys? If you are a black woman you know how offensive this is, surely??

Soubriquet · 19/05/2023 15:07

@TrudyProud

I don’t care if you’re black, white, pink, brown or green. It’s not the point.

The evidence provided by the woman, proves she paid for this bike and was therefore surrounded by men who tried to forcibly take it away.

So far, there have been no evidence the men had also paid for the bike

Not when they are boys.
Have you even watched the videos?

They are clearly boys
The racist nurse isn't worried about and baby/foetus? Who "risks " the life of their child for a£10 (or whatever it costs)

Are they boys? How old do you think they are?

all the news articles refer to them as men. You can’t use the citibikes unless you’re at least 16yo so they must be at least 16.

CwmYoy · 19/05/2023 15:19

@TrudyProud Maybe shut up now before you look an even bigger fool.

DustyLee123 · 19/05/2023 15:20

Can we please stop using the ‘K’ word ? I’m fed up of seeing this misogyny used.

ImAvingOops · 19/05/2023 15:20

"But as a white woman, knowing people are filming, and the other people are black? redock and step away calmly, every time."

Why the fuck should she? She paid for it, it's hers.

Unless of course the6 don’t have a citibike account and knew it wasn’t their bike and was doing this for shits and giggles? Or downright theft.

TrudyProud · 19/05/2023 15:23

A number of responses I'm receiving on this thread have racial and racist undertones. When I joined the discussion it was to provide an alternative pov as the what I took away as a black woman watching the videos.

I won't accept being called a berk (?), told to fuck off or have OP turn recent history on its head because you don't want to consider that this nurse is the instigator and in the wrong

Giggyto · 19/05/2023 15:25

@TrudyProud The problem here is that you have almost no critical thinking skills. The situation was badly handled on both sides and there was no need for the escalation. They could have called the helpline to determine who the bike belonged to. There was no need to film the incident or for her to freak out. Badly managed from both sides.
It's the trial by media that most people object to.

Cantstandbullshitanymore · 19/05/2023 15:26

TrudyProud · 19/05/2023 13:11

@littleripper @Walrussy you do realise the nurse lied ? The boys had already paid for and hired the bikes.
The nurse tried to steal the bike from them.
Said nurse then weaponised her white woman tears in an attempt to perpetuate said theft.

She deserves to be sacked not just suspended. In a recent past her crying wolf could have resulted in the murder of those black boys. Think back to Emmett Till

oh cut it out, we have seen her receipt showing she had the bike, where is his proof?

Really they would have been murdered like Emmett Till, you’re just race baiting now.
