Rebel Wilson has had her first child via surrogate

Rebel Wilson (who I love) has announced via IG that she’s had her first baby via surrogate this week. Lovely for her to have a baby.

But the topic of surrogacy rears its ugly head and once again I’m wondering why so many rich and famous women choose to have a surrogate. Rebel has had significant publicity with her weight struggles and is currently in a relationship with a woman (she doesn’t name her as co-parent).

she hasn’t publicly said why she used a surrogate but I feel a bit uncomfortable by this as being a step yet again

It feels it is becoming the norm for rich people. It is concerning to say the least. The most rage inducing however was bloody Tan France and his smug bemusement that people were concerned for the surrogate. The idea it was such a non-issue for him made me feel quite violent.

I have to say though I am not a Rebel fan and this has made me like her even less.

Surrogacy seems to really have become the rage in Hollywood now. it has always existed but I used to think it was mostly for cases where people could not conceive a child, and desperately wanted one. Now it is anyone who doesn't want to be pregnant and has money - they just buy a womb. It is so commercialized now and probably also happens far more than we even know.

I don't know how they find surrogates but I would like to think they aren't poor or vulnerable women who do it for the money as that is pretty exploitative.

Tan France can fuck right off, after his campaign to replace breastmilk with formula and saying breastfeeding “shamed” those who can’t he can talk a long walk off a short cliff

I really dislike the way Rebel Wilson weaponised being the fat girl in order to have her USP and for many years was her entire personality , (Adele’s a bit different a very talented woman who just happened to be overweight ) she’s probably having a surrogate for body image reasons tbh

LeafHunter · 07/11/2022 17:05

You can be paid as a surrogate in the USA cant you?

As someone who is 34wk pregnant and struggling to work at full capacity I can see why some women would feel being pregnant would impact their career.

Midlifemusings · 07/11/2022 17:08

In the USA, surrogates are paid between $60K and 100K if done through official agencies. Then expenses, allowances, agency fees etc are about 100K more.

Here is a fee list for a USA based agency

I have a feeling Rebel has a gastric sleeve and I am not sure if that makes pregnancy more dangerous? Still not an excuse to rent a womb.

@LeafHunter - I am sure Rebel could have afforded not to work for a year or so. It doesn’t mean we should be able pay another woman to take all the risk for us.

Lottapianos · 07/11/2022 17:12

'I have to say though I am not a Rebel fan and this has made me like her even less.'

Agree. And also agree that Tan France can fuck all the way off

CrossStichQueen · 07/11/2022 17:14

I dont care who it is who is buying a baby and renting a womans body it is a disgusting practice and should be banned world wide.

Midlifemusings · 07/11/2022 17:15

The Kardashians and other public figures normalized it in the USA. It is pretty common place among the Hollywood elite.

Careers, toll on their bodies, dealing with pregnancy and birth. Much easier to buy a baby and skip right to the bringing baby home part.

LindseyHoyleSpeaks · 07/11/2022 17:16

Agree @CrossStichQueen

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/11/2022 17:16

I can see why some women would feel being pregnant would impact their career well if women can’t cope with 9 months of career inconvenience god help them with the next 18yrs!

Soontobe60 · 07/11/2022 17:19

So she’s not had her first child, she’s procured a baby

autumndays2 · 07/11/2022 17:20

I think Rebel posted on Instagram last year that she had medical issues around becoming pregnant.

Whitewolf2 · 07/11/2022 17:20

Totally agree this is very disappointing unless for unknown medical reasons, especially when she pushes a down to earth style personality…
Also read the babies name is Royce? Very erm, unusual?!

Most people who have the money for surrogacy, have the money for nannies. Many in Hollywood have round the clock nannies. They have house managers, cleaners, gardeners, chefs etc.

Celebrity surrogacy is now outsourcing the pregnancy and childbirth just like they outsource most things.

It's gross, and exploitative, regardless of the reason.

No offence to anyone but it’s not ok if for medical reasons too.

Guiltycat · 07/11/2022 17:25

I am firmly against surrogacy for any reason at all, including medical. I struggled with infertility for many years, and still dismissed it as an option even when i thought it would be impossible to have dc 'naturally'.

It completely disregards the well being of the baby (for clarification, I mean after it has been born). There is evidence to show that being separated from the birth mother is emotionally damaging and distressing and can have long lasting effects.

And no matter how 'willing' the woman, it is never acceptable to rent a part of a human out.

I know- hence it’s high indicative that said person shouldn’t be a parent at all imo

There was some sort of invention for that kind of weight loss. Which she credited “walking lots” for.

But she’s now got a reputation for being litigious, so publishers are at pains to avoid commenting anything less than positive. Her lack of work could potentially be connected to something other than an Australian magazine revealing her real age and background.

Fancylike · 07/11/2022 17:39

*intervention!

Walkden · 07/11/2022 17:41

"It's gross, and exploitative, regardless of the reason."

Surely if we believe your body your choice surrogacy is a matter for the people involved.

After all no one has a problem paying people for medical trials or to fight in wars which also present significant and in some cases considerably more, risk to the person being paid.

Beefcurtains79 · 07/11/2022 17:45

It’s simply human trafficking for rich people. It’s revolting.

Phrenologistsfinger · 07/11/2022 17:46

Some off comments here!

She has been open about having infertility issues, she lost weight on the advice of her Doctors to try and improve her fertility, and has PCOS etc. I suspect she may have issues that mean a surrogate was considered to increase her chances of actually having a baby. If you conceived easily you have no idea how hard infertility is so stop the judging.

(No, I’m not her. I have just had my 12th pregnancy loss and I am fucking angry about it. And judgemental harpies who have no idea about infertility just get on my last nerve.)
