I'm Nigerian. I'm livid. We don't consent to this. [Warning - contains details of child sex abuse]

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10732351/Girl-10-gang-raped-classmates-filmed-attack-trip-World-School-Games.html

The school suspended a 10 year old girl for improper behaviour when confronted with the video of her gang rape.

Shame on them.
Shame on all those who distributed or watched that video.
Shame on the adults who even attempt to look for signs of how "willing" that child was.
Shame on a system which enabled a school to think they could make this "story" go away.

My entire country needs to come out of this with a completely different perspective on girls bodies. I don't hold out much hope... the change seems to only happen by tiny shifts.

I'm livid that all I can do is type on the Internet. I want to scream.

Doesn't seem to have just been ... the boys were also sexually assaulted.

Mysterioso · 30/04/2022 05:38

And I insist. That girl was suspended first and the boys only later.
Sticking fingers in ears won't make it go away.

I'm taking specific issue with how the girl was handled.

The school's approach was that of the girl bringing the school into disrepute. This girl and her mum are now trouble makers.

any adult involved in condoning this approach should be utterly ashamed.
This is reprehensible behaviour.

The starting point should be that rape has occurred. Maybe no one should be charged but that should be the starting point.

Then it is how has the school failed in its approach, not how did the child fail the school.

There are so many more things that make just so angry about this. Under age sex, especially with girls, is so prevalent in Nigeria that the attitude to the video creation, distribution and scrutiny is just mind numbing.

Anyone want to take guesses as to how this incident at an age so young will affect those involved in career prospects?

And I'd be very upset if one of those bits turned out to be much older than the others. But I'm very hopeful that's not the case.

There are just so many more things to be ashamed of here.

Typo: Boys not bits

They should certainly be treated equally although if the video shows the girl was telling the boy what to do and given 10 year old girls are sometimes a bit more mature than 10 year old boys it may be the school saw the video, saw the girl telling the boy to do things and therefore they suspended the girl first. However I have not seen the video so am only going off what people on this thread have said above what they saw on the video.

dementedpixie · 30/04/2022 09:24

Nobody on this thread has seen the video so it's all hearsay.

And yes, let's be factual and let's take cases on their merit because I have a boy and would not want him 'falsely accused' for an act because someone wants to defend every girl child.

This is the feminism board right? Where we don't automatically think women and girls are liars.

I am a woman- I don't think that anyone is automatically a liar.

Like most (if not all here) I am not watching the video, so cannot comment on exactly what happened - however, its terrible all round.

Every child here has been failed - every single one of them!

Even if the girl was showing them what to do (and I am not commenting on if she did, just the hypothetical ) she has been failed in the most grievous of ways. A 10 year old child should know age appropriate sex education. I'm not sure what that is currently, my DC are grown up now, but I am pretty sure group intercourse is not on the curriculum

Porcupineintherough · 01/05/2022 15:30

The starting point should be that rape has occurred.

A statutory rape (girl) and a number of sexual assaults (boys). All the children are victims here from what I understand (I won't watch the video so going on I what I understand of its contents) so I don't see how it helps to start criminalising any of their behaviour.

As for the treatment of women and girls in Nigeria, it has a long way to go. But I think these issues are being discussed and highlighted more and more by Nigerian women (in the south more than the north tbf) which is a start.

"Under age sex, especially with girls, is so prevalent in Nigeria"

The age of consent is 11 so...

Shit.

Hopefully this will open a productive conversation in Nigeria.

And also in Dubai although I suspect that the most important thing there will be that they were not married so everyone involved will just be viewed as dirty slutty immoral foreigners. Would be delighted to be proved wrong. Although given this prince among men is in charge:

I don't hold out much hope. Still, well done on your 2000 Guineas win Mo. Coroebus can run really fast so... yay:
