@greasyshoes how have you debunked it? This is the original tweet I believe:

She could have been given a higher fine than the man - showing the absurdity of the law in France. The law in the UK is not upheld.
I work with young people. By their own account almost every single young woman's first experience of seeing a penis is when a man sends them a video of themselves or they see a man indecently expose himself.
What is your reason to tell me to 'calm down' in a patronising way - very David Cameron of you.

I can see why you might feel, looking at that scenario, that wanking in public should have a higher possible fine than uploading porn. However, I think this may be the kind of scenario where, while wanking in public is always bad, uploading porn can in some cases not be all that serious, but in other cases can be very serious indeed, probably more so in terms of harms than the public wanker. So the possibility of a very high fine reflects that.

Nightlystroll · 27/04/2022 22:09

A yoing guy where I used to work was sacked for watching it on his work computer in the office! He used to wait til the majority had gone home and then listen on his headphones. He got warned once but then did it again. 🤷 Second time he got sacked. Why wouldn't you learn from the first time?

But I agree. Before stating what should happen to him, we need to hear the actual facts.

ClaudiusTheGod · 27/04/2022 22:10

Will we ever get a name?

and what is the best way to deal with a man watching such stuff in public without giving him the reaction he’ll get off on? If they like to shock, presumably calling them out loudly doesn’t work?

greasyshoes · 27/04/2022 22:12

@MangyInseam

There's one error in your comment, in that it wasn't a potential fine for uploading porn, but rather, a potential breach of France's privacy laws. Apart from that, you clearly get it. Unfortunately, most people do not read beyond a tabloid headline.

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 27/04/2022 22:31

Years ago I worked somewhere when a doctor was caught with downloaded porn on his office laptop. He did not share the office with anyone and everyone was astonished when he was found out. He was sacked immediately and reported to the board, who struck him off. Even with the pornification of our culture, to have this happen in the place where national policy is decided is beyond disgraceful. Especially given this governments disdain for public servants who would never get close to being allowed to get away with this kind of crap.

greasyshoes · 27/04/2022 22:35

@Wheresmywoolyjumpers That's shocking that someone would be struck off for something legal and harmless like pornography.

The clue was ‘office laptop’

dh would also be sacked if he had porn on his office laptop

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 27/04/2022 22:39

Oh and would also be ‘struck off’ in his profession

daretodenim · 27/04/2022 22:46

It's a form of exhibitionism. They're often getting off on the risk of being caught. Like the guy on the train with the pp who smiled when she moved seats.

So it's about power and control in public spaces and the thrill of the possibility of being caught.

Should be illegal to watch porn in public.

knowinglesseveryday · 27/04/2022 22:47

Isn't it shocking how appalling they seem to be?

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 27/04/2022 22:48

Em, yes, @greasyshoes , what @RufustheFloralmissingreindeer . You cant do that on a work device or at work. And he was struck off because he should have been conducting himself professionally and not bring his profession into bad repute. Not sure what is shocking about that? But making me wonder if men and women really regard porn so differently - clearly from the posts on here, many people (men) don't see watching it as a big deal, whereas many women would find that disgusting and threatening.

GlasswareisOverated · 27/04/2022 22:48

Pornographery has no place in the work place, at all, ever, no excuses, no exceptions.
Whoever this vile bastard is I hope he gets exposed and if he is married, his wife leaves him on the basis of his utterly mindbogglingly repulsive behaviour.

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 27/04/2022 22:49

Disgusting and threatening to be around it when they don't choose to be, I mean.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/04/2022 22:52

PlinkPlankPlunk · 27/04/2022 13:10

I work in the public sector and would be sacked on the spot for watching porn at work (and rightly so). Lets just see, shall we?!

this. And just to add I work in the private sector and anyone on any role I can name would (rightly) be sacked on the spot for watching porn at work. I’ve known it happen.

GreenLunchBox · 27/04/2022 22:52

Shinyandnew1 · 27/04/2022 21:45

No doubt it will be referred to some sort of ‘internal’ enquiry which will found that no crime was committed, or he didn’t know it was porn, or he did know it was porn, but he did it by accident. Or some such whitewash.

He should be suspended, which is what would happen if I was found watching porn at work whilst I should have been doing my job.

Yes, but at least the Tories know what a woman is

greasyshoes · 27/04/2022 22:55

@Wheresmywoolyjumpers How does possession of pornography bring your profession into disrepute?

GlasswareisOverated · 27/04/2022 22:59

Because pornographery is seedy. It's something to be kept private, if you must indulge.
It's on the same level as hiring a prostitute to come into your office and give you a blow job.
No one would ever defend this, well the same goes for watching pornographery.

greasyshoes · 27/04/2022 23:02

It's on the same level as hiring a prostitute to come into your office and give you a blow job.

The difference there is that you're bringing someone into your office who shouldn't be there, like if his wife came into his office and had sex with him. Pornography is just imagery being downloaded onto a computer that's already there.

Now while I don't endorse watching porn at work, because if you're watching porn then you're not working, do note that this is a laptop. Is it possible that he downloaded and watched the pornography when he was at home?

TurquoiseSwirl · 27/04/2022 23:06

Fucking from. Surely the whole point of porn is to get off, and why would you do that in front of others? Surely that’s a sacking offence.

OhLordyWhatNow · 27/04/2022 23:09

I believe most employment contracts mention not using employers property i.e. laptop, pc, mobile phone to download or view indecent images.

My employer sets professional standards and for viewing pornography at work you would be dismissed for gross misconduct.

catandcoffee · 27/04/2022 23:17

I do believe we have an attention seeking 'person' on here .🙄

greasyshoes · 27/04/2022 23:20

I believe most employment contracts mention not using employers property i.e. laptop, pc, mobile phone to download or view indecent images.

They're not "indecent images." That term refers to illegal pornography, and it goes without saying that that's a sackable offence.

Now if the employer wants to set rules about use of property, fair enough, but that's the employer... getting struck off is a huge step above that.

RoseslnTheHospital · 27/04/2022 23:24

Yes, it's a huge step above that. Thank goodness that some organisations take that line. Being legal to watch doesn't mean it is appropriate or professional to do so at work, using work equipment, in front of work colleagues.

DrDinosaur · 27/04/2022 23:40

Of course legal pornography is 'indecent images'.
If men must watch it they should do it in private, not at work, or in any public place. Surely watching porn where other people are around and may see it would constitute 'outraging public decency' - is that not still an offense?

DrDinosaur · 27/04/2022 23:44

Well according to this article it is an offense, and it carries an unlimited fine or prison sentence:
