I am so sick of this term being used to belittle women. I definitely this this is misogynistic hate speech.

Middle aged women and older who had an opinion were always respected and listen to, now if a women of any age speaks out she is ridiculed.

I think we should call the Karen term out for what it is.

You mean the name Karen in the UK re WC women?

Sorry not sure got your point right.

Fyi straight white male is not negative! It's descriptive. The equivalent would be xyz woman. Not a name!

KayKayWat · 31/10/2021 22:24

Funny how there isn’t a ‘name’ for men who complain.

Well, to be fair it's always women that complain 99% of the time in my experience. I'm sure others will disagree.

KayKayWat · 31/10/2021 22:26

Fyi straight white male is not negative!

It absolutely is! Always linked to 'privilege' and seemingly totally blind to the swathes of white working class boys who have the lowest prospects out of all groups.

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 22:26

Yes. Men never complain. Hmm

You haven’t met my Dad then
NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 22:37

Not IME- both complain!

What type public facing roles out of interest?

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 22:43

I've only seen Karen used online never heard irl.

I have never seen an individual bloke get told. Oooh you're such a straight white male!

I know straight white males feel ignored with all this focus elsewhere but that's a different issue!

What is more common for certain types of straight white male maybe-

Thugs
Hooligans (football)
NF (or similar) types
Little Englanders (mainly men I think this gets used?)
Townies/ cash (kash?) and etc changes over the decades
Yobs
City boys
Scrotes

That sort of thing

Rich ones would be. Um. Toffs? Hooray types. Clueless twats.. maybe?

Anyone got any more?

KayKayWat · 31/10/2021 22:56

Honestly, you must have been living under a rock if you've not heard the phrase being used. Ten seconds on Google will bring up loads of debates on its usage.

Has the term ‘straight white male’ really become an insult?

Same here. Apparently we live under a rock.

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 23:02

Nope.

Ok Karen. Etc. Seen on net. Never heard in real life.

Ok straight white male? Nope. It's pretty clunky. For a start. Unless 'SWM' is being used as an insult?

I thought you'd have more to say about the things that are used tbh! Ah well.

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 23:05

I find it odd these days how in general. So many seem to take online as the be all and end all. And forget about RL. Somehow.

The insults used in real life are generally much... Fruitier. Round here anyway. And recently working closely with some Scots. Very very impressive vernacular when it comes to insults etc!

KayKayWat · 31/10/2021 23:10

I've got to be up at 5am for work, so no I'm not going to have too much more to say. But groups like 'yobs' etc aren't really the same as they don't describe a particular ethnic or socioeconomic group (even if one is implied/assumed).

Saying "I hate yobs" is not the same as saying "I hate black people" or "I hate working class people" IMO.

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 23:11

Just thinking.

Before lockdown went for meal in nice restaurant.

Next table family thing. At end the older man at table said his pudding was 'different to last time' and he wanted it the same. Obv sorry no that's what it is. Got aggressive. Family looked resigned. He wanted wine all free. Blah blah. Awful bloke.

When left caught waiter eye (we are next table). I said god that man! What a dickhead / aresehole (or similar). And we had a chat.

Under no circumstances would I have said god. What a straight white man. I mean. Come off it.

In real life. Depends where you are. But words like arsehole, nasty sod, cheeky bastard, arrogant wanker, nasty little shit etc are perfectly serviceable.

Karen. Nope. SWM? Nope.

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 23:15

And you think articles using the phrase straight white men are equivalent to saying I hate black people?

Again. Real life?

And also again. This is about individuals that do xyz isn't it? Not groups.

Which public facing roles have you had pretty much only women complain?

Working in eg a shop that sold stuff aimed at women I'm guessing!

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 23:16

I never say I hate group X personally.

Some of my best friends are yobs 😁😂😂😂

SusannaRowan · 31/10/2021 23:17

"Thugs" is seen as racist in America. Hence the company "Thug Kitchen" changing their name.

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 23:21

Well yes I've heard that before.

We're not in America though.

That is a bizarre name for a restaurant. Never heard of it.

WhiskyXray · 31/10/2021 23:24

Well, to be fair it's always women that complain 99% of the time in my experience.

Victor Meldrew enters the chat

KimikosNightmare · 31/10/2021 23:24

They are more indeed perfectly serviceable and actually tell you about the specific person and conduct.

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 23:26

Googled. USA peeps.

Changed their name to Bad Manners 😂😂😂😂😂

I saw them by accident in a pub in the 90s!

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2021 23:38

From what I can see they're a vegan thing.

This is why things don't translate.

Buster bloodvessel + California vegans = 😁

PhiOmicron · 31/10/2021 23:38

@NiceGerbil absolutely. There is a whole raft of insults we reserve exclusively for men. Tosser, prick, wanker, prat, berk, tit, cock, git, bellend- well, I needn't bring down the tone, but there's a whole raft of terms which I only hear applied to men IRL. Occasionally I might see them directed woman-wards online, esp on Mumsnet, but it generally seems laboured and unnatural. Also, "cunt" is only used for men in my circles; I'm aware this is spat at women in some places, though.

And it's obvious, given the obnoxious behaviour of so many men, that there would be so many rude terms for them at our disposal. If they're bothered, they could try not acting like cocks.

Re: proper names used as insults, I lurk on the BBC football comments threads (sigh... for research), and kept seeing "Billy Big Bollocks" and "Billy Bullshitter" bandied about today. I suspect any Williams objecting would rightly get short shrift.

PhiOmicron · 31/10/2021 23:39

This is the poster WhiskyXray trying and failing to work out how namechanging works, btw.Smile

KayKayWat · 31/10/2021 23:41

And you think articles using the phrase straight white men are equivalent to saying I hate black people?

I’ve noticed that you have this tendency, NiceGerbil, to attribute sweeping statements to people when they never said any such thing.

I really don’t have a clue how you reached the conclusion that I’m saying that articles about ‘straight white men’ are akin to somebody saying they hate black people.

I mean exactly what I wrote. That calling someone a ‘yob’ is not describing any sexual preference or ethnicity, so saying you hate yobs isn’t the same as saying you hate gay/black (or straight/white) people. Being a yob is usually defined by a specific type of behaviour, usually loutish or aggressive. Being gay or white is literally a description of characteristics totally separate from behaviour/conduct.

KayKayWat · 31/10/2021 23:44

and kept seeing "Billy Big Bollocks" and "Billy Bullshitter" bandied about today. I suspect any Williams objecting would rightly get short shrift.

Yes, these terms have been used for decades. Except it was always ‘Bobby Bullshitter’ when I’ve heard it.
