Well done.

Be prepared to feel rough for a little while - but just keep in mind that once you're over those initial side-effects, things can only get better.

Incidentally, I found it was better to take them at night time because I could cope with the initial side-effects better that way. Some people find that they then can't sleep, but I didn't have that problem. It might be worth thinking about taking them at night time if you feel too rough when you take them in the morning.

Im just really nervous in case i have a reaction to them but today my hangover is bad enough so i wouldnt be able to tell!

Being drunk yesterday won't affect taking them now. But be aware that you shouldn't drink while you're taking them - they won't work as effectively. And alcohol is a depressant, so it's really counter-productive. So keep off the booze for a bit - at least until the initial side-effects have gone. The odd drink after that won't hurt, but getting blind drunk will stop them being so effective.

thewiltedrose · 03/06/2008 10:55

Thanks everone i feel better about it now.
Maybe i should start an AD thread for regular and new takers? lol

I think there's a Citalopram thread going already where you might find a bit of extra support, if you'd find that useful.

Squirdle · 03/06/2008 10:58

Yay, well done

As has been said before, you could try taking them at night to ward off any side effects, but if you are like me, then it'll be when you remember during the day

It is going to help you. You've taken the first step on the road to making things better...be very proud of yourself

WigWamBam · 03/06/2008 10:59

Tie them to the handle of your toothbrush, or put them with something that you know you will get out and use every day - so that you will be reminded at least once. Or set an alarm to remind you. If you forget to take them you can get withdrawal side-effects, similar to the ones you get when you start taking them.

thewiltedrose · 03/06/2008 11:04

i reckon there that scary and in my mind i wont be able to forget

TWR, I have been on them for 20 months now.

Originally I started on 20mg, first 4 weeks were I felt as though my anxiety increased somewhat but I was warned of that, after that it got alot better and I really made an effort with my diet too like no alcohol, chocolate, cheese and sugary drinks.

That was working all fine until xmas loomed and I was bought tons of chocolate and I scoffed the lot.
It instantly sent my mood and anxiety rocketing.

I did have my dose lowered to 10mg as they started to make me vomit and travel sick for some bizarre reason.

Now I'm weaning myself off them so taking one a week until I dont get the side effects of not taking them and I'm also having CBT and my own support worker.

thewiltedrose · 03/06/2008 11:12

i keep hearing about CBT what exactly does it do?

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 03/06/2008 11:25

CBT is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It's quite complex, but basically it tries to identify the negative and dysfunctional thoughts which are responsible for the way you feel, and teaches you to replace them with more positive, realistic thoughts.

Nbg · 03/06/2008 11:29

Its hard work and you really have to go at it.

I'm very lucky in that I got a v good Dr who sorted all this out for me, finally after 2 years and I can have my appts at home.

My support worker comes every week starting from tomorrow.

mamalovesmojitos · 03/06/2008 11:38

twr dont worry about side effects. i have been on five types of ads over eleven years.

the first few had side effects like making me feel really sick and not being able to eat.

but my doc told me citalopram was the best for low side effects and i found that. i did experience loss of libido and slight increase of appetite but of course i was happy to trade them for depression.

so dont worry! after a while it was like taking a vitamin. but dont come off them without doctor's advice. the last time i stopped i suffered withdrawal symptoms.

though to be fair i never had before and maybe this was because i had been taking ads for so long?

if you need them you need them so take them and give yourself a break. good luck.

thewiltedrose · 03/06/2008 11:38

see i dont even belive the tablets work so i dont think that would be right for me.

OP posts:
thewiltedrose · 03/06/2008 11:39

thanks mama it heps to hear some good stories about them makes them less scary ifkwim

OP posts:
TheodoresMummy · 03/06/2008 11:41

The tablets work, believe me

thewiltedrose · 03/06/2008 11:42

so how do you feel when they kick in?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 03/06/2008 11:43

You just feel so much less despair and hopelessness.

At least, that's been my experience on ADs.

I could function because I wasn't so unmotivated due to a horrible feeling of hoplelessness.

And I could sleep better because I wasn't having endless cycles of panic attacks.
