It saved my life. For me it's like having a superpower - I am so much calmer and happier and able to cope.

Cameleongirl · 12/06/2022 14:11

@Painintheass22 Keep going with it, you probably aren’t going to feel any significant effects for at least two weeks, which is frustrating, but it needs to build up. 💐

Painintheass22 · 12/06/2022 16:16

Hey ladies

couldn’t get logged on all morning - needing words of encouragement today til take my 3rd tablet. Really spaced out today. Crying and basically just a mess. Is this normal?

@reallyworriedjobhunter hey, so glad it helped you. How long did it take to take effect? Struggling on day 3.

@FetchezLaVache just ok. But they do say it gets worse before it gets better. Really spaced out. Crying. And my overthinking is so so bad. Worse than it usually is. Didn’t help me and my partner had a massive row. I think I’ve pushed him away for definite this time.

Keep going with it OP. I started taking it in October 2020 and have been on it ever since, for anxiety and depression. The first couple of weeks were up and down, I was tired and quite weepy. Then I was sort of numb for a while, which was a relief after being so highly strung and on edge for so long. Now I'm on a much more even keel and have been since probably about January 2021. Occasionally I feel a bit stressed with work but nothing like I used to. My anxiety is much better controlled now and I very very rarely have intrusive thoughts, and if I do, I am much better able to push them away. For me, it has been a lifesaver. I was very reluctant to start taking it but I'm so glad I did.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 12/06/2022 16:28

@Painintheass22 It was a few weeks.
It takes a while for the medication to build up to therapeutic levels.

Cameleongirl · 12/06/2022 16:42

Yes, please don’t stop now, it’s far too soon. Perhaps try taking it at a different time of day? I mentioned upthread that it works best for me to take it before going to bed.

Cameleongirl · 12/06/2022 16:45

Re. Your partner. If the row was caused by your overthinking, rather than anything he did, apologize and explain that you’re doing your best and adjusting to this new medication.

Most people are understanding when they know you’re trying. 💐

Shunter350 · 12/06/2022 16:49

Yes I'm on Citalopram. For nearly two years..
It takes a while to work, probably 5 weeks.
For me it levelled out the extreme spikes ( high and low ) in my mood.
Not very scientific I know!
But best wishes., you're on the right road!

@Cameleongirl all me. Being too moody, uptight and letting my mind run absolutely wild. I just want to change and quick for him and my kids. Sometimes I’m really not nice to be around.

OP I'm on day 8, I took the 20mg today , after being on 10mg all week. It is starting to work, I have periods of calmness which are utter bliss. I was still feeling shite and nauseous on day3. Now I'm certain it's going to help. Just watch out for the anxiety spikes and remember it's just your body adapting.

@stillherenow thank u. That’s so true it is just my body adapting. It’s horrible though. I just want to see light at the end of the tunnel. I hope my body takes to it! I will give it a week and maybe increase to 20mg if there is no difference and doctor let’s me. What time do u take yours? I’ve took mine at 2.30pm as last 2 days. Yet to take it today as I was scared. Maybe leave it til tonight?

stillherenow · 12/06/2022 18:20

I take mine at 7am , I started taking it a lot night but I woke at 3am! My theory is that it takes about 6 hours to kick in, so I'm having quite bad mornings but much more serene afternoons, which is good as then I'm pretty ok for after school time. I'm guessing that as it builds up over the weeks you end up with a constant level of it in your system and stop getting the peaks and troughs so ultimately it won't matter when you take it?

I would definitely take it asap, you'll be in a big slump now and I think you need to take it regularly for it to even out eventually.

I was really bad the first 5 days and really quite manic.

bogoblin · 12/06/2022 18:31

Hi OP, I've been on citalopram for 8 years now and it has really helped me - through lots of ups and downs and life changes and bereavement and becoming a parent!

I take mine just after my breakfast. I agree with pp that you need to give it time to work - you've done so well getting on it in the first place, keep at it! One day you will wake up and realise you've felt quite even for the past few days and let me tell you that day feels great! Good luck, stick with it

Painintheass22 · 12/06/2022 18:32

@stillherenow ok going to take it right now! I need to power through and feeling sorry for myself and think of the positives! All I think is negatives! ALL.THE.TIME!! I don’t want to be like this anymore! I’m draining everyone!

Keep posting here ! I definitely have bad times as well, but I'm holding faith because of all the people on here saying it's helped them and now I'm starting to see a bit of a difference. I'm back at work tomorrow after 2 weeks off so definitely expecting some anxiety flares over the next few days!

Useranon1 · 12/06/2022 18:46

OP keep going. I'm on Sertraline not citalopram but it's the best decision I ever made.

I was really spacey at first. Had periods of drowsiness and insomnia so I played around with when I took it.

First few weeks made me really tense (clenched jaw) and my anxiety much worse.

But it all eased off and now I'm 6 months in living life completely normally, after not being so bad at on point I wasn't able to leave the house due to panic attacks.

Painintheass22 · 12/06/2022 18:52

Thank you everyone from
the bottom of my heart for ur replies. I need to keep going forward!

Has it really changed ur lives?

Is Diazapam ok to take with them? I only have a few left as doctor stopped
giving them. So I try to ration them as best as possible

Taking both will worsen all your side effects, especially the spacey feeling. They're both targeting your anxiety. Do you feel you need both?

Painintheass22 · 12/06/2022 21:31

@Useranon1 at the minute no. But just incase I feel a panic attack coming. I just want the AD to work quick. I can’t stand being like this. I’m pushing everyone close to me away at a desperate rate.
