How often do you think of suicide?

I was talking to a friend about how someone we knew had sadly tried to kill themselves and she said it had never crossed her mind once, in her entire life to do so, even in really difficult times.

I think about it a lot. I assumed everyone did. I know how. I know what preparations I’d make. It’s often in my mind.

Is this not the norm? I’m genuinely asking here. I assumed everyone gave this some thought.

Never.

Wolfiefan · 11/10/2020 16:05

It really isn’t the norm to think of suicide a lot. Because most people don’t feel they want to end their lives.

EezyOozy · 11/10/2020 16:06

Never. Even through the worst times.

Whoiswrongg · 11/10/2020 16:07

Only when I’ve been in a really dark place. When my mental heath is ok, I don’t. I think it could be worth thinking about if there’s anything else going on that may be making you more unhappy than you think. Flowers

Mermaidwithoutacause · 11/10/2020 16:07

Thank you. I feel my perception of what is normal
Is really skewed. I expect to be unhappy. I expect life to be miserable. And I expect one day to take my own life.

I have never thought of suicide, ever no matter what I've been going through.
I don't think this is normal at all, I'm pretty sure you knew this and were just looking for permission to ask for help. You don't need permission, please talk to someone.

Often sometimes daily

BoneAppleTeaa · 11/10/2020 16:10

Fairly often, maybe every other week. Used to be several times a day. It’s not normal though, I know that.

Meuniere · 11/10/2020 16:11

No never.
Even when things have been hard.

I too think about suicide quite often.

Sometimes when i’m scared that things won’t get any better, only worse.

Sometimes i’m scared i snap and just off myself.

And sometimes i wonder what the hell is even the point, might just well end it now.

I also thought everybody has these thought too, at least once in awhile.
I’ve had thought about suicide since pre-teen, maybe even earlier, so that normalize it for me though.

ParisianLady · 11/10/2020 16:12

Sometimes once a month, currently several times a day/ week.

Whilst I know this isn't normal, I'm genuinely surprised that others never think about it. Maybe I'm a bit less normal that I thought. Hmmm

dhisreadingmypostsagain · 11/10/2020 16:12

Never in my life until my recent awful health which I had to have surgery for, the pain was relentless and just debilitating, with zero health support as the NHS a was shut, I felt very alone and scared I sat and just wished it would all go away.

I told my DH how I felt and he whipped all of the pain relief out of my room and took control, I felt a bit silly afterwards but in the moment it was very very real and very frightening, so I'm so sorry for anyone who thinks this daily.

Mermaidwithoutacause · 11/10/2020 16:12

I have an effective plan. It would work. I think about what I will need to get in order first. I think about it a lot. It’s on my mind most of the time.

Never. Not even in the darkest times. Please talk to someone.

Meuniere · 11/10/2020 16:13

I have dreamt that I was ill though. I was so exhausted at the time, a stay in hospital looked like paradise.

Darker · 11/10/2020 16:13

I think about it in a very abstract way, mainly something I might do if I was terminally ill. But I know people who think about it a lot as something they could do imminently.

Please, if you are having actively suicidal thoughts do consider talking to Samaritans.

hexmeginny · 11/10/2020 16:14

From time to time, it's never a serious thought with intended action - sometimes late at night I think about it all ending. But I never feel in danger. Just on occasion, you can't really see much point in being around anymore. Well I don't.

oldmotherriley · 11/10/2020 16:14

Quite often.

Wolfiefan · 11/10/2020 16:14

You need to speak to your GP. This is not a normal mindset at all OP.

username501 · 11/10/2020 16:15

OP what you're describing is called suicidal ideation. There's some info here you might find useful.

Here's a mental health assessment you can do and show your Dr. I suggest you make a Dr appointment as soon as you can to discuss.

Pl778 · 11/10/2020 16:15

This is really interesting to read. It depends on the state of my mental health. I can go months without thinking about it and then suddenly think about it regularly but usually not 'seriously'. I didn't expect to see so many nevers.

Also MN often delete any threads about suicide. Just so you’re aware.
